The former British colony of Hong Kong is marking 25 years since its return to Chinese rule. Anniversary events have kicked off, and China's president is making his first visit since 2017.

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke at an inauguration ceremony on Friday for Hong Kong's new chief executive, John Lee Ka-chiu.

He said, "By enacting the national security law and revising the electoral system, we have basically been able to achieve rule by patriots in Hong Kong."

Xi added that the "one country, two systems" policy has been recognized as a success.
"I want my compatriots in Hong Kong to emphasize mainstream values suited to the 'one country, two systems' principle, which is centered on patriotism," he said.

Xi arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday. It's his first visit there since Beijing tightened its grip on the city.

The handover anniversary used to be marked by massive protests from those calling for greater democracy.

But this time, police are warning against acts of violence or public disorder.

More than 30,000 officers will ensure security at the events.

The son and namesake of ousted Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos has been sworn in as president, praising the legacies of his father and outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took the oath on Thursday in a ceremony at the National Museum in Manila.

Foreign dignitaries present included Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan.

Marcos Jr. said in his inauguration speech that his father built more and better roads and produced more rice than all administrations before his.

He also said Duterte "built more and better" than all the administrations succeeding his father's.

The new president expressed intent to continue Duterte's infrastructure projects and contribute to the country's economic development.

He also stressed that he is resolved to boost the country's food self-sufficiency rate.

Earlier, Marcos announced that he named himself minister of agriculture in response to rising food prices resulting from the situation in Ukraine.

His father is said to have achieved success in improving infrastructure and agriculture sectors during his early rule.

NHK has learned that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend the peace memorial ceremony in Hiroshima City, western Japan, on August 6 this year to mark the US atomic bombing of the city in 1945.

Informed sources say he is now working out the details of his visit with Hiroshima City officials. This will be his first attendance at the Hiroshima ceremony.

He hoped to attend the annual ceremony in 2020, but the plan was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2018, he attended a memorial ceremony in Nagasaki, another city devastated by an atomic bomb three days after Hiroshima.

It has been 12 years since his predecessor, Ban Ki-moon, became the first UN secretary-general to attend the Hiroshima ceremony in 2010.

It is believed that Guterres is hoping to use his visit to Hiroshima as an opportunity to send a strong anti-nuclear message to the world, as the Russian invasion of Ukraine heightens the risk of a nuclear war.

Guterres may also be hoping that his visit to Hiroshima could help boost momentum toward nuclear abolishment during a review conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in August.

The first NPT conference in 7 years is scheduled to start on August 1 at the UN headquarters in New York.
