Members of the United Nations Security Council are locked in a bitter dispute over North Korea. The US is blaming Pyongyang's allies for tacitly condoning recent missile launches. But China and Russia say leaders in Washington are stoking tensions on the peninsula.

Military personnel from the US and South Korea have been holding joint exercises since Monday. They just announced that they are extending the drills to Saturday.

North Korean officials say that such a "sustained provocation" is bound to be met with a "sustained counter-action."

The US ambassador to the UN told Security Council members on Friday that the North has fired 59 missiles this year alone. Linda Thomas -Greenfield blamed China and Russia for providing Pyongyang with "blanket protection." She said those members have "bent over backwards" to justify the North's repeated violations and, in turn, have "enabled the country and made a mockery of this Council."

Delegates from South Korea and Japan were invited to attend. They, too, criticized China and Russia for "emboldening" the North.

China's ambassador shot back. Zhang Jun said the "root causes" of the launches did not occur in "isolation." He called on the US to stop "unilateral declarations of tense confrontation" and instead show sincerity by "acting responsibly."

The Russian delegate echoed that criticism. Anna Evstigneeva said US leaders are using sanctions to try to force North Korea into "unilateral disarmament."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed that they jointly oppose the use of nuclear forces over Ukraine.

Scholz held talks with Xi during his visit to China on Friday. He became the first G7 leader to visit the country since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

They discussed several topics, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Scholz told reporters after their meeting that he agreed with Xi that nuclear threats are irresponsible and incendiary.

China's Foreign Ministry says Xi told Scholz that the international community should oppose the use of or the threat to use nuclear weapons.

In front of the reporters, Scholz stressed he successfully drew China's opposition to nuclear forces. He said many people will think it was right for them to discuss Russia's invasion and an escalation that should not happen in the conflict.

Scholz is being criticized for prioritizing economic relations with China despite growing concerns over the country's human rights abuses and maritime expansion.

Xi is apparently trying to ease such concerns and draw Germany to China's side by showing consideration for the issue of Russia's nuclear threat.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit to China.

They discussed several topics on Friday, including deepening economic cooperation. It was a controversial gathering and the first between Xi and a G7 leader since the pandemic began.

Scholz said it is good to have a very intensive exchange on all issues they want to and can discuss in regard to their bilateral relations.

Xi said China and Germany as two major countries should work together in times of change and uncertainty, and contribute more to global peace and development.

Scholz brought a delegation of business leaders with him to China, which is Germany's largest trading partner.

He's facing criticism in Germany for the trip. He is depicted as Xi's puppet in a picture published in a newspaper. Some argue Scholz is prioritizing economic gain over growing concerns about China's human rights issues and maritime expansion.

People protested a decision made by the German government last week. It allows a Chinese state-owned business to invest in a port in Hamburg.

German media report Scholz pushed for the agreement despite objections within his Cabinet.

Professor Wang Yiwei of Renmin University of China says advancing bilateral ties will greatly benefit both sides. He says cooperation between China and Germany has long served as a model for China's ties with the EU and the G7. He says the relationship between China and Germany is a device to stabilize ties with the G7.

Scholz's predecessor, Angela Merkel, was also known for strengthening economic relations with China.

A foreign policy expert in Germany, Hanns Maull, says Scholz is trying to separate politics from economics and normalize economic cooperation with China. He added that the ties between the two countries have been negatively affected by disputes between China and the United States.

Russian troops are showing signs of a retreat from the strategically important southern Ukrainian city of Kherson.

The Ukrainian military has suggested it will carefully watch the opponent's movements before advancing troops.

Ukrainian forces are continuing their counteroffensive to retake territories captured by Russia. The Ukrainians are believed to be advancing to the city of Kherson, the main city in the Kherson region.

A pro-Russian leader in the Kherson region said on Thursday that Russian forces will most likely leave for the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. The troops are currently believed to be deployed on the western bank, where the city of Kherson is located.

The leader's remark is taken as an indication that Russian forces may withdraw from areas near the city. The leader said on Friday that a 24-hour curfew was imposed on the city.

Also on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the need to evacuate Kherson residents from dangerous areas. During talks with participants at a ceremony in Moscow to celebrate Russia's National Unity Day, Putin said civilians should not suffer from bombardments and other measures related to military activities.

The Washington Post on Friday quoted Western officials as saying that Russian forces appear poised to retreat. The newspaper reported that the Ukrainian military could recapture the city soon.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said in a briefing on Friday that rumors about the retreat of the Russian occupiers from Kherson could be an element of a "special psychological operation," and that Ukraine carefully studies all the information. He added Ukrainian forces have been making gradual advances in Kherson.

Multiple US media outlets are reporting that more people are expected to take advantage of early voting for the November 8 midterm elections in most states compared to four years ago.

In the midterm elections, people vote to choose senators, representatives and state governors.

Early voting is already underway in most states. The University of Florida, which tracks nationwide voting statistics, says more than 36 million people had cast mail-in ballots or gone to the polls as of Friday.

In the southern state of Georgia, where a close race is taking place, more than 1.63 million people had voted by Monday. That is up about 36.6 percent from the same period four years ago. The state says it is a record high for a midterm election.
Lines formed at polling stations on Friday, the final day for early voting in Georgia.

It remains to be seen whether the rise in the number of early voters is a sign that overall turnout will be higher in this year's midterm elections.

US media say former President Donald Trump is considering announcing his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on November 14.

Media outlets, including Axios, reported on Friday that a series of multi-day political events will possibly follow the official announcement.

The latest polls suggest that Republicans will likely make gains in Congress in next Tuesday's midterm elections.

Axios says Trump hopes to take credit for possible Republican victories to build momentum for his presidential bid.

Observers say the level of success by candidates Trump supports will determine how much he will be able to maintain his influence.

A special committee of the House of Representatives is looking into the attack on the Capitol by Trump's supporters in January last year. The FBI is also continuing its investigation after seizing classified documents from his home.

US pharmaceutical firm Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech say they have begun a clinical test of a vaccine candidate targeting both influenza and COVID-19.

The companies said on Thursday that the test in the United States involves 180 participants aged 18 to 64.

The candidate is a combination of an influenza vaccine candidate being developed by Pfizer for four types of strains, and an authorized coronavirus vaccine jointly developed by the two companies for the original coronavirus and Omicron variants.

The study is aimed at evaluating the safety and optimal dose level of the vaccine candidate and how many neutralizing antibodies it can produce.
The combined vaccine is expected to provide efficient protection from influenza and COVID-19, both of which can cause severe symptoms.

The companies' rivals, Moderna and Novavax, are also developing such vaccines.
