Britain's Trade Policy Minister Greg Hands has met Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei, showing that his government attaches importance to Taiwan.

Hands has been in Taiwan since Monday for annual trade talks between Britain and Taiwan.

Media were allowed to cover opening remarks in his meeting with Tsai on Wednesday.

Tsai said she hopes Taiwan and Britain sign a trade pact.

She also expressed hope that Britain can smoothly join the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, and support Taiwan's membership for mutual prosperity and development.

Procedures are underway for Britain to join the TPP.
The country applied for membership before Taiwan.

Hands said, "Our relationship reaches beyond trade and investment."

He added that they both have strong democracies and institutions, and much in common.

China has expressed firm opposition to any public trips to Taiwan by countries with diplomatic ties to China.

India's foreign minister says he discussed Ukraine with his Russian counterpart and urged Russia to return to dialogue and diplomacy.

India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spoke to reporters after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Tuesday.

Jaishankar said, "We are seeing growing concerns on energy and food security emanate from the conflict that are coming on top of severe stresses created by two years of COVID." He suggested that emerging economies are especially feeling this pain.

He said therefore India "strongly advocates a return to dialogue and diplomacy."

He added, "We are clearly on the side of peace, respect for international law and support for the UN Charter."

Lavrov stressed that Russia will cooperate with India in energy, military technology and other fields.

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo has posted a record group profit for the six months through September mainly due to a weaker yen.

The company says net income jumped 34 percent to over 230 billion yen, or nearly 1.6 billion dollars. That is the highest ever for the first half of the company's business year.

Sales topped 650 billion yen, or about 4.5 billion dollars in the period. That is up 5.2 percent in yen terms from a year earlier.

Besides the weaker yen, brisk sales of new software for Nintendo's flagship Switch console contributed to the record bottom line.

But the company downgraded its forecast for Switch sales for the full year to 19 million units because of disruption to production caused by shortages of chips and other components. That is 2 million units fewer than the projection as of May.

The company expects to book the equivalent of more than 2.7 billion dollars in full-year net profit as a result of the yen's continued weakness. That would be an increase of over 410 million dollars from its May forecast.

Nintendo says it will front-load production and select appropriate means of transportation in the run-up to the holiday season to deliver as many consoles as possible to consumers worldwide.

Japan's top government spokesperson has reiterated that no coronavirus-related restrictions on people's activities will be imposed in principle unless a new strain more powerful than the Omicron variant emerges.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu was speaking to reporters on Wednesday.

Matsuno said numbers of new coronavirus cases across the nation are on an uptrend, with the northern prefecture of Hokkaido posting record daily highs. He noted that the occupancy rate of hospital beds in the prefecture is also rising.

Matsuno vowed to monitor the situation across the country with a sense of urgency.

But he added that the government has no intention of enforcing new restrictions if a new outbreak is caused by a variant on par with the Omicron variant in infectiousness and pathogenicity.

He said the basic stance of the government is to maintain socioeconomic activities while keeping up anti-infection measures.

Matsuno touched on possible suspension of the government's travel discount campaign aimed at boosting domestic tourism, saying it is up to each prefecture to decide whether to continue with the program.

But he added that the government is closely watching the infection situation and will decide accordingly.

Matsuno also said the government will work out specific measures in consultation with an expert panel if a surge in infections strains the nation's healthcare system.

In recent days, a growing number of people in eastern Japan have been testing positive for COVID-19.
The pace of the increase has been accelerating.
Experts are warning that this indicates an eighth wave is approaching.

The number of new COVID infections has increased week-on-week in all 47 prefectures.
The increases have been sharper in eastern Japan.

The average increase rates week-on-week through Monday stood at 72 percent in Miyagi Prefecture; and 53 percent in Tokyo.

Toho University Professor Tateda Kazuhiro, who is a member of the government's coronavirus advisory panel, says the latest positivity rate in Tokyo is nearing 30 percent.

He says that based on data from the past, the number of positive test results increases before the start of a new wave of infections.

He says the latest figures are a clear sign that an eighth wave is approaching.

An international environmental NGO has given Japan its satirical "Fossil of the Day" award at the venue of the COP27 climate change conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Climate Action Network presents the award every day during the meeting to countries it says are "doing the most to achieve the least" to curb global warming.

The group said on Wednesday that Japan is "the world's largest public financer for oil, gas and coal projects", and its financial flow is in "the completely wrong direction."

Tsuchida Michiyo, a member of a Japanese environmental NGO, expressed her regret about Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's absence from the COP27 meeting.

Tsuchida said Japan is the world's fifth largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and she wants the Japanese government to be aware that climate change problems are threatening the lives and livelihoods of many people.

A Japanese official said the government acknowledged that Japan was picked as an awardee, but it will not comment on any specific activity by private groups.

The official said Japan seems to have been commended by other countries for its role in tackling environmental issues, and added that the government will work to produce results in dealing with the "loss and damage" caused by climate change.

The operator of Japan's Uniqlo clothing chain and a key United Nations agency are teaming up to help refugee women in Bangladesh learn sewing skills and boost their self-reliance.

Fast Retailing's Yanai Tadashi said, "More than 100 million people around the world, women and children in particular, are really suffering."

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said, "We need additional resources and additional partners, not just among governments but also from other actors, including the private sector."

Fast Retailing and the UNHCR announced the project to offer sewing training to female Rohingya refugees from Myanmar. They have been fleeing for a camp in southeastern Bangladesh, mainly since 2017.
The women are expected to be paid to make items such as cloth sanitary napkins. The two parties aim to have a total of 1,000 people take part in the project through 2025.

The UNHCR says more than 940,000 Rohingya are at the camp. Supporting them to become independent and find jobs remains a challenge.

A wild boar attacked several people in a city in Tokushima Prefecture, western Japan, leaving six slightly injured. The animal remains on the run.

The police received a report shortly past 7 a.m. on Wednesday that a woman was bitten by a wild boar in a residential area in the city of Komatsushima.

They say the animal later bit some people near a home improvement store in the city. They announced that six people were slightly injured, including two elementary school boys.

The police say the wild boar then ran to the rooftop of a nearby shopping center's parking lot, bumped into a police car that had rushed to the site, then fled.

They say three cases of a wild boar crashing into a vehicle have been confirmed in the neighborhood.

The wild boar on the run is 1 to 1.5 meters long. The police are looking for the animal and warning residents to stay away and avoid making noise if they spot it.
