Transcripts of emergency calls made before Saturday's deadly crowd crush in Seoul show the revelers' growing fear and how they urged the police to intervene.

South Korea's national police chief on Tuesday revealed the content of 11 emergency calls made before the weekend Halloween crowd crush that killed 156 people in Seoul's popular Itaewon district.

National Police Commissioner General Yoon Hee-keun said police started receiving the calls from about four hours before the crush turned deadly.

In a call made shortly after 6:30 p.m., the caller expressed the fear of being crushed to death while more people kept arriving, and asked for crowd control.

Another caller said at after 8:30 p.m. that people were falling down on the street and warned of an imminent danger.

Around 9 p.m., callers reported an abnormally crowded situation and asked police to control the flow of people.

A call at 10:11 p.m., just minutes before the deadly crush, said people were about to get crushed to death and the situation was chaotic. Screams of people were also recorded.

Police sent personnel to the site in response to only four of the 11 calls. The police chief admitted that the response to emergency calls was insufficient, and promised to clarify where responsibility lies.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inspected the site of a deadly bridge collapse in western India and stressed the need to conduct a thorough inquiry.

Modi visited Gujarat state on Tuesday and chaired a meeting to review the situation in the wake of Sunday's accident. Local police say 134 people have been confirmed dead.

Police say they have arrested nine people on suspicion of having failed to take safety control measures. They include repair company workers and security guards. Charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Indian media outlets reported that the suspension bridge, a popular tourist site, had been reopened just days ago after being renovated. They said more than the allowable limit of people may have been on the bridge.

Security camera footage shows people taking pictures on the bridge without noticing anything wrong just before the accident. They are thought to have had no time to run away before the bridge crashed into the river.

Indian police have arrested 9 people in connection with a deadly bridge collapse in Gujarat state on Sunday.

Police say the death toll has risen to 134 as search operations entered a third day.

Authorities say those arrested include managerial staff, ticketing clerks and security guards who failed to regulate crowds before the collapse occurred.

They have been booked on charges of culpable homicide and negligence.

The pedestrian bridge over the Machchhu River was packed with people when it collapsed.

An initial investigation has revealed technical and structural flaws and maintenance issues as the prime cause for the tragedy.

Meanwhile, people across the region are in a state of shock.

A crowd gathered outside a hospital in the town of Morbi on Monday evening to pay tribute to those who died.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is monitoring the relief operations and has also paid his respects to the victims.

Toyota Motor posted record sales for the first half of this fiscal year, helped by the weaker yen, but rising costs of raw materials led to its first net profit drop in two years.

The Japanese auto giant logged group sales of 17.7 trillion yen or about 120 billion dollars in the April-to-September period, an increase of 14.4 percent in yen terms from a year earlier. Sales were robust in overseas markets, including China and Southeast Asia.

But Toyota's net profit fell 23.2 percent as it provided financial support to its suppliers facing difficulties. The automaker also posted a loss for its withdrawal from its Russian business.

Japanese airline operator ANA Holdings also released earnings, and said its sales soared 83 percent year-on-year in yen terms in the six months through September.

The company recorded its first mid-term net profit in three years, of about 132 million dollars.

It said the number of passengers on international flights jumped more than five-fold from a year earlier in the April-September period, when entry restrictions in Japan and overseas eased significantly.

ANA Holdings nearly doubled its net profit forecast for the current fiscal year through March to 40 billion yen, or about 270 million dollars.

This year is the 400th anniversary of a dark chapter in Japanese history. Fifty-five Christians in Nagaski were burned at the stake or beheaded for their beliefs. Some were European missionaries. Others were Japanese who had embraced the religion. The events back then continue to have an influence on the understanding of how Japan became the country it is today.
