There is no letup yet for the people in parts of central Japan hit by Monday's massive earthquake. Strong aftershocks continue to rock the region.

Local government authorities say 100 people are now confirmed dead in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Authorities are warning a wet weekend will only compound the danger. Rain fell Saturday morning in the quake-hit town of Anamizu in the prefecture. Wet weather is forecast through Sunday across the Hokuriku region and Niigata Prefecture, along the Sea of Japan coast.

Authorities say the ground has been loosened, and even a small amount of rain could trigger more landslides.

They warn that a cold front on Sunday afternoon could bring snowfall through Monday, especially in mountainous areas.

The magnitude 7.6 quake on New Year's Day reached a maximum of seven on the Japanese intensity scale. In addition to the 100 dead in Ishikawa Prefecture, more than 200 people are unaccounted for.

Several roads remain blocked, making it difficult to reach survivors. The central government is sending relief supplies to isolated coastal areas by sea. More than 170 people are still stranded.

The Ishikawa prefectural government has set up a base for transporting supplies sent from across the country.

Evacuation centers in the prefecture currently house about 31,000 people.

Local government officials say about 66,000 households are still without water.

Severe seismic activity on the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas continues.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday morning. Authorities are urging residents to stay alert for more, possibly as large as the first.

Japanese authorities say the death toll has risen to 126 from Monday's massive earthquake in central Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture, and more than 200 people are still unaccounted for.

The magnitude 7.6 quake struck on New Year's Day.

At least 10 people including an 8-year-old boy are believed trapped in part of the town of Anamizu after landslides destroyed several houses.

Several roads remain blocked, making it difficult to reach survivors. Japan's Self-Defense Forces are using helicopters to carry out rescue operations and deliver supplies to isolated areas. But survivors say items such as gasoline and kerosene are in short supply.

The situation remains difficult at facilities for the elderly. In one facility with 100 residents, the second floor was severely damaged and is now unusable. Residents have been forced to live in the limited available space. The facility has been forced to take tough measures, such as using stored rainwater to flush toilets.

Authorities warn that the weekend's weather will only worsen the danger for people in quake-hit areas. Rain is forecast through Sunday across the Hokuriku region and Niigata Prefecture. The ground has been loosened, and even a small amount of rain could trigger more landslides. A cold front on Sunday afternoon could bring snowfall through Monday, especially in mountainous areas.

Evacuation centers in the prefecture currently house about 30,000 people. Local government officials say about 66,000 households remain without water.

Severe seismic activity continues on the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas. A powerful magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Ishikawa Prefecture on Saturday morning. Authorities urge residents to stay alert for more, possibly as large as the first magnitude 7.6 quake.

A study shows the earthquake that struck Japan's Noto Peninsula on Monday has expanded the coastline in the area by up to 175 meters.

An investigative team led by Associate Professor Gotou Hideaki from Hiroshima University's graduate school studied the ground shift caused by the earthquake and the effect of tsunami waves in the central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa, where the quake was centered.

The study was conducted using mainly aerial photos taken after the magnitude 7.6 quake. It covered a stretch of about 50 kilometers of the coastline of the northeastern part of the Noto Peninsula.

Results show the quake raised the ground along nearly all that area, expanding the land. It shifted the coastline seaward by 175 meters in the Kawaura district of Suzu City.

Researchers say that as a result, the ground area expanded by a total of 2.4 square kilometers. Seawater has almost vanished at some ports on the northern coast of the peninsula.

Imagery taken by a French satellite on Tuesday also showed that seawater had disappeared from a port in the Ozawa district in Wajima City. Gotou says this resulted from ground uplift.

Gotou says it is known that a massive earthquake entailing ground uplift has struck these areas several times in several thousands of years, and he believes that a similar tremor occurred this time.

He says his team has also confirmed that tsunami surged inland to a height of up to about 3 meters in the Horyu district in Suzu City.

He notes that active faults, which he says cause very extensive damage when they shift, are located across Japan. He advises people to check if there is one in their neighborhood.

Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei says he will make a donation along with his team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, to support people in Japan affected by the powerful earthquake on New Year's Day.

Ohtani pledged the aid on social media on Thursday, along with a statement by the Dodgers saying the team and its owner firm will donate one million dollars in addition to Ohtani's donation.

Ohtani wrote, "In the name of those lost to the earthquake in central Japan and in collaboration with the Dodgers, I am making a donation in aid of the survivors."

He also said, "I would like to thank those who have joined in the recovery effort, and my hope is that we continue to come together to support those whose lives have been upended."

In the Japanese version, Ohtani adds that he hopes all the missing people will be found quickly and is praying for the reconstruction of quake-hit areas.

Ohtani is from Iwate Prefecture, one of the areas hit hard by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. He was in his first year at a high school in the prefecture at the time.

Key words : haneda reopen 90 percent

Japan's transport ministry says a runway at Tokyo's Haneda Airport will reopen as early as Monday following Tuesday's collision between a passenger plane and a Coast Guard aircraft.

Runway C is one of four at Haneda. Without it, the airport's flight capacity has been reduced to about 70 percent.

The ministry said a reopening of the runway would see capacity recover to about 90 percent when there are southerly winds, and about 100 percent when there are northerly winds.

The ministry also says damaged lighting along the runway will take up to one month to repair.

The ministry says low-altitude routes over central Tokyo that were introduced four years ago cannot be used for the time being. Instead, more aircraft will fly over Chiba Prefecture at low altitudes.

Transport minister Saito Tetsuo asked people in Chiba for their understanding.

Japan's transport ministry has established an air traffic controller post at Tokyo's Haneda Airport for constantly monitoring a screen that shows airplanes' locations.

The move follows a collision on Tuesday between a Japan Airline's passenger plane and a coast guard aircraft.

Five coast guard members died, and one was seriously injured. All on board the JAL plane escaped, and 15 passengers received medical treatment.

The coast guard plane is believed to have mistakenly entered the runway where the collision took place. Traffic controllers have said they were unaware at the time.

Starting Saturday, a screen that shows planes' locations will be monitored round the clock.

When a plane enters a runway where another is landing, the runway turns yellow and the two planes turn red.

The system is believed to have worked properly at the time of the collision, but was only used as a supplementary measure.

The ministry says the new post will not require an increase in the number of personnel.

Key words : voters in taiwan

Voters in Taiwan pick a new president a week from now, and the three candidates are ramping up their efforts on the campaign trail.

The election takes place on January 13.

The candidates are Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, Hou Yu-ih of the biggest opposition Kuomintang party, and Ko Wen-je of the second-largest opposition Taiwan People's Party.

All three are set to hold rallies in major cities on Saturday and Sunday.

Taiwan's relationship with China is a key issue. Lai, who is seen as the frontrunner, has said, "In reality, Taiwan is already a sovereign, independent country."

He has also criticized his rivals for supporting Beijing's position that Taiwan is part of China's territory.

Hou and Ko are keen to enhance ties with Beijing. They have criticized Lai for describing himself as a "pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence."

Hou is attempting to gain votes by stressing the need to back a single opposition candidate.

Ko is trying to stop people voting for Hou. He says his rival is supported by China.

The United Nations humanitarian chief has strongly criticized Israeli forces for causing a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In a statement issued on Friday, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths described Gaza as "a place of death and despair" nearly three months after "the horrific 7 October attacks."

Griffiths said that areas where civilians were told to relocate for their safety have come under bombardment.

The Israeli military said on Friday it attacked more than 100 Hamas positions, including command posts and weapons depots, and killed a large number of Hamas militants in the southern city of Khan Younis.

Al Jazeera reported fierce battles being waged in the central region as well.

Health authorities in Gaza said on Friday 162 people were killed by Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours, bringing the overall death toll in the enclave to 22,600.

The World Health Organization announced that 26 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza sustained damage during the roughly three-month-long military operations by Israel. It warned that the "ongoing reduction of humanitarian space plus the continuing attacks on health care are pushing the people of Gaza to breaking point."
