Lai Ching-te won the presidency in Saturday's elections in Taiwan, but his ruling Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, lost its majority in parliament.

The results show that Lai received 40 percent of the ballots cast, or nearly 5.6 million votes.

Hou Yu-ih of the largest opposition Kuomintang Party garnered nearly 4.7 million votes. He was followed by Ko Wen-je of the second-largest opposition Taiwan People's Party, who received about 3.7 million votes.

Voter turnout was 71.86 percent. That is down more than three percentage points from the last election, which was held four years ago.

Lai has taken the position that China and Taiwan are different, and he has pledged to continue the policies of President Tsai Ing-wen, who bolstered cooperation with the United States in an effort to deter Beijing.

The two opposition candidates criticized Lai for describing himself as a "pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence."

Hou has blamed the DPP-led government for bringing the risk of military clashes to both sides of the Taiwan Strait. He said he would lower the risks by promoting cross-strait contacts.

But Hou and Ko failed to collect enough support to win the election. China described the race as a choice between war and peace.

Lai said in a victory speech on Saturday night that the people of Taiwan successfully resisted efforts from external forces to influence the election.

Lai's victory means the DPP will become the first political party in Taiwan to win three consecutive terms since direct presidential elections began in 1996. He is set to take office in May.

In the parliamentary elections on Saturday, the Kuomintang Party won 52 of the legislature's 113 seats.

The DPP captured 51 seats and lost 11. The Taiwan People's Party, or TPP, won eight seats.

The DPP's parliamentary election setback appears to reflect public discontent over rising housing prices and the public's psychological aversion to being ruled by one party for a long time.

Lai said the DPP's failure to hold onto the parliamentary majority means the party's efforts were not enough. He said the party should respect the opinions of the public.

The loss of the majority is expected to make it difficult for Lai to implement his policies.

Taiwan's president-elect Lai Ching-te has met senior Japanese representatives the day after his election victory, which observers say is a possible sign that he will seek closer ties with Japan.

Lai met visiting Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chairman Ohashi Mitsuo on Sunday morning at the headquarters of the Democratic Progressive Party in Taipei. The association serves as Japan's de facto embassy.

Lai expressed his condolences and sympathy for victims killed or affected by the massive earthquake that struck Ishikawa and surrounding prefectures on New Year's Day.

Ohashi thanked Lai for the compassion he expressed on behalf of Taiwan's people.

The president-elect described Japan as a very close partner of democracy for Taiwan.

Ohashi replied that people in Japan understand the importance of the bilateral relations. They agreed to work to raise these relations to a new level.

Lai also met Furuya Keiji from Japan's main governing Liberal Democratic Party, who heads a nonpartisan group of lawmakers promoting exchanges between Japan and Taiwan.

Lai expressed hope that economic and cultural exchanges will deepen further.

Lai won 40 percent of votes to beat two opposition candidates in the presidential election on Saturday.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa has reaffirmed the government's consistent position regarding Taiwan, saying Japan will continue to deepen relations.

Hayashi told reporters on Monday that he will refrain from commenting on the protest lodged by the Chinese embassy in Tokyo on Sunday after Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko issued a congratulatory message to Taiwan's president-elect Lai Ching-te. The Chinese side expressed "strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" to the statement.

Hayashi said, "For Japan, Taiwan is an extremely crucial partner and an important friend, with which it shares fundamental values and enjoys close economic relations and people-to-people exchanges."
He added that Japan has in the past congratulated Taiwan for having smoothly implemented elections in a democratic manner.

Hayashi said the Japanese government has consistently upheld its position to maintain a working relationship with Taiwan on a non-governmental basis in line with the Japan-China Joint Communique of 1972.

The spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council has released a statement on the result of the Taiwan elections.

Chen Binhua noted that the results of the Saturday election reveal that the Democratic Progressive Party cannot represent the mainstream public opinion of Taiwan.

Lai Ching-te won the presidency with 40 percent of the votes but his ruling DPP lost its majority in parliament.

Chen added that Saturday's election cannot change the common wishes of people on both sides of the strait and cannot stop the ultimate wave to realize the unification of the motherland.

He said that the Chinese government's position of upholding the One-China principle will not change and it opposes "Taiwan independence" separatist movements and external interference.

The statement also expressed strong willingness for unification by working with relevant political parties and organizations from Taiwan to boost exchanges and cooperation and advance the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and unification of the motherland.

Lai Ching-te of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party has declared victory in Saturday's presidential election.

On the campaign trail, Lai said he would follow in the footsteps of outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen, and that appears to have helped him secure support from a broad range of voters who favor the status quo.

At a news conference on Saturday night, he said, "Our victory has great significance. It's a victory for Taiwan's democracy."

Lai's victory means the same party will be in power for a third consecutive term. This is the first time that has happened since direct presidential elections began in Taiwan in 1996.

His two contenders, Hou Yu-ih of the largest opposition Kuomintang Party and Ko Wen-je of the second-largest opposition Taiwan People's Party, conceded defeat earlier.

Speaking to his supporters, Hou expressed regret. He said he should have made more of an effort to win the election. Hou apologized for disappointing the supporters and for failing to bring about a change of government.

Ko told his followers that he will not give up, and he told them that they should not give up either. He also said that he will continue to work hard, as he believes people will vote for him and his party in the next 2028 elections.

Taiwan's relationship with China was one of the key issues at stake. The ruling DPP wants to resist pressure from Beijing, while the opposition parties favor expanding dialogue with the country.

Two weeks have passed since a massive earthquake struck central Japan on New Year's Day, killing 222 people. Twenty-two people are still missing. Search operations are continuing but they are being hampered by bad weather.

At one point police had to call off the search due to snow. They now plan to use heavy equipment to search for the missing at landslide sites where they have found what appear to be human remains.

Ishikawa Prefecture says over 400 people in more than a dozen communities remain cut off due to blocked roads. Water and power are unavailable for hundreds of evacuation sites hosting more than 16,000 people. Fourteen evacuees are now believed to have died from sudden or chronic illness after staying at a temporary shelter.

Time seems to have stopped at one area in Wajima, a hard-hit city in Ishikawa Prefecture. Traffic lights crushed under a collapsed building remain just the same as the day the quake hit.

Even after two weeks, the full extent of the damage is not yet known. Survivors are facing the challenge of rebuilding their livelihoods.

An NHK crew met a woman taking shelter at an evacuation center in Suzu City. They asked her what the past two weeks have been like for her.

She said, "It brings tears to my eyes to see how huge the damage is. I recall, this stood here, that one there, we were living our life humbly, doing our best."

Key industries in the affected areas have also been severely damaged. The governor of Ishikawa Prefecture said the fishery and agriculture industries suffered widespread damage across a vast area.

Ishikawa Governor Hase Hiroshi said more than 80 percent of the fishing ports were damaged because the quake pushed the ground up, breaking ice-making facilities. At least 170 boats were overturned or swept out to sea. There has also been damage to farmland and roads reported in southern parts of the prefecture.

The governor said, "We have confirmed farmers have not lost their willingness to resume farming. First of all, we would like to do what we can for farming in the spring and support recovery efforts."

Officials say it will take time to fully grasp the extent of the devastation.

North Korea says it has successfully test-fired a solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile.

The announcement was carried in Monday's edition of the Rodong Sinmun, the ruling Workers' Party paper, along with other state-run media.

It is reported that the projectile had a warhead that travels at hypersonic speeds, and officials verified its gliding and maneuvering characteristics and the reliability of the newly developed high-thrust solid-fuel engine.

It is the first time Pyongyang has announced its successful testing of a solid-fuel intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Solid-fuel missiles can be launched more quickly than those that use liquid propellants.

South Korea's military on Sunday afternoon said the North fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile eastward from near Pyongyang. Monday's announcement by North Korea is believed to be referring to this launch.

India's longest sea bridge has opened along the coast of Mumbai. The project was completed with financial and technical assistance from Japan.

The 22-kilometer Mumbai Trans Harbor Link was inaugurated at a ceremony on Friday. The bridge connects the central part of the western city with an area across the bay.

Construction began in 2018. More than 70 percent of the costs came from Japan International Cooperation Agency loans of over 242 billion yen, or about 1.7 billion dollars.

The structure comprises bridge girders assembled with Japanese technology.

Speaking at the ceremony, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "I am especially grateful to the Japanese government for the cooperation it has given in building this bridge."

Mumbai is India's largest commercial city. The rapidly urbanizing area is home to about 18 million people, and the bridge is expected to ease traffic problems and air pollution.

Japan's ambassador to India, Suzuki Hiroshi, also attended the ceremony. He said Japan has the technology, experience and human resources to help Indian society develop even further.

Myanmar's military says it has agreed with an alliance of ethnic armed groups to a temporary ceasefire under the mediation of China.

A spokesperson made the announcement on Friday.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning also told reporters that a ceasefire has officially been agreed.

She said, "The two sides promised not to undermine the safety of Chinese people living in the border area and Chinese projects and personnel in Myanmar."

In late October, the alliance of ethnic militant groups launched coordinated attacks against Myanmar's military in the eastern state of Shan, bordering China.

The fighting continued even after Beijing announced in December that both sides had agreed to a ceasefire.

The alliance said last week that it has taken control of an area of Shan, adding that more than 2,300 military personnel had surrendered.
