The situation in central Japan's Noto Peninsula remains severe more than two weeks after a devastating earthquake and tsunami. Cold weather is expected on Friday in the devastated area, and there are concerns that this could pose health risks to the survivors.

The quake rocked Ishikawa Prefecture and other areas on New Year's Day. More than 200 died, including those who had survived the initial quake.

89-year-old Soto Setsuko was rescued from her collapsed home around 72 hours after the tremor hit. She was conscious when she arrived at a hospital.
But her condition suddenly got worse. She died two days after being rescued.

Her son, Soto Takeshi said, "Rescuers from the fire department in Sakai City, Osaka, saved my mother. I can't express how thankful I am for them. I thought she would have recovered when she received treatment."

Setsuko is believed to have died of crush syndrome, in which toxic substances can accumulate and circulate in the body after being pulled out from under debris.

Ishikawa prefectural government officials say 232 people have been confirmed dead in the prefecture.

Small businesses in Ishikawa have also been affected.
Iwamae Junetsu, a farmer in the town of Noto, had his farming machinery stored in a warehouse that was flooded by the tsunami. Iwamae is worried about the future of his business and said, "I can't farm without agricultural equipment. Now, I have to figure out what I should do next."

A number of survivors of the powerful New Year's Day earthquake that devastated central Japan are still enduring harsh conditions in shelters or sleeping in their cars.

In Ishikawa Prefecture, 232 people had been confirmed dead as of 2 p.m. on Friday, including 14 who died of suspected disaster-related causes.

Hirota Juko of Suzu City was trapped under her home with her husband and mother-in-law after the quake. She was eventually rescued by neighbors, but she was the only one to make it out alive.

Hirota said her husband had managed a dry cleaning shop for many years and was an active member of the community. She said she will try to move forward.

In Wajima City, many evacuees are still sleeping in their cars due to concerns over infectious diseases.

The risk of so-called "economy class syndrome" rises when people stay inside cars for long periods. Nurses are visiting the cars to encourage people to exercise and drink water to prevent symptoms.

Weather officials say it will start raining in the disaster-hit region on Saturday afternoon. Rainy or snowy weather is expected to continue for some days.

The officials warn the ground is still loose after the quake and that there is a risk of landslides.

Evacuees are advised to take precautions against hypothermia, including covering themselves with blankets and exercising.

Japanese space agency officials say they have successfully landed an unmanned space probe on the moon. Japan is the fifth country to achieve the feat, after the former Soviet Union, the United States, China and India.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched a lunar lander from Tanegashima Space Center, Kagoshima Prefecture, in September.

JAXA officials said that SLIM, or Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, touched down successfully on Saturday.

But they said that the onboard solar battery is not generating power, adding that other equipment is generally functioning properly.

The landing target was just 100 meters across. That is far more precise than previous moon missions. The technology JAXA used is expected to pave the way for more pinpoint landings.

The global race to explore the lunar surface is heating up, with more involvement from the private sector.

US space agency NASA aims to launch a manned mission to the moon in 2026. It will be the first attempt in about half a century.

Japan's historic landing of an unmanned probe on the moon provided a gripping experience for space enthusiasts across the nation.

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency officials say SLIM, or Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, touched down on Saturday.

People at a public viewing center near a JAXA facility in Sagamihara City near Tokyo cheered when the probe's altitude hit zero meters.

A group of women in Tokyo attempted to receive signals from SLIM using special equipment. But the task became difficult when the moon moved low on the Earth's horizon.

A team at Wakayama University in western Japan used a 12-meter antenna to communicate with the small rovers being carried by SLIM.

Professor Akiyama Hiroaki says the signals they received suggest the probe has landed successfully.

A US company that developed a lunar lander says the spacecraft appears to have burned up as it reentered the Earth's atmosphere. The firm had earlier abandoned an attempt to land the craft on the moon due to problems with the propulsion system.

Astrobotic Technology's Peregrine lunar lander was launched on January 8 from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The company said on Thursday it had Peregrine reenter the Earth's atmosphere so as not to create debris in space. It said it believed the craft burned up over the South Pacific.

The mission was part of US space agency NASA's project to work with the private sector to transport goods to the moon. Peregrine was carrying NASA observation equipment. This could have been the first moon landing by a private company.

Global competition over lunar exploration is heating up. Japan's space agency JAXA successfully landed an uncrewed probe on the moon on Saturday. Another US company is planning to launch a lunar lander as early as next month.

US President Joe Biden has spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and expressed his view that a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine is desirable to achieve peace.

The White House said the two leaders talked on the phone on Friday for the first time since December 23. They discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip, where an Israeli offensive against the Islamic group Hamas is leading to a growing number of civilian casualties.

Biden mentioned Israel's responsibility to reduce civilian harm and protect the innocent even as it maintains military pressure on Hamas.

The White House said the president also discussed "his vision for a more durable peace and security for Israel fully integrated within the region and a two-state solution with Israel's security guaranteed."

Netanyahu expressed a negative view toward the two-state solution at a news conference on Thursday.

Biden told reporters after the talks that "there are a number of types of two-state solutions," saying, "I think there's ways in which this could work."

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said in a news conference there is no change to Biden's view that the best long-term solution for the security of the Israeli people is "a free and independent Palestinian state."

The US military says it has destroyed anti-ship missiles in a Houthi rebel-controlled area of Yemen.

The US Central Command said its forces conducted strikes on three Houthi missiles that "were aimed into the Southern Red Sea and were prepared to launch."

It said it carried out the strikes on Friday at around 6:45 p.m. local time.

The Central Command said it determined the missiles presented an imminent threat to merchant vessels and US Navy ships in the region.

It added the action "will make international waters safe."

US media outlets report it is the sixth time the US military has struck Houthi sites.

The US government on Wednesday announced the designation of the Houthis as a specially designated global terrorist group.

But the rebels continue to carry out attacks on vessels in the region. They launched ballistic missiles into waters near a tanker on Thursday.
