NHK has learned that Japan's Emperor and Empress may revisit places symbolic of World War Two and the 2011 earthquake and tsunami before the Emperor abdicates in April 2019.
Sources close to the Imperial family say Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko strongly hope to travel to those locations in 2018, to be close in thought to the war dead, the bereaved and survivors of the disaster.
The sources say officials of the Imperial Household Agency are making arrangements for the visits.
In June, the Imperial couple is expected to visit the city of Iwaki in Fukushima Prefecture, where many evacuees from the 2011 nuclear accident are living. They will likely talk to some of the evacuees.
The couple will visit another city, Minamisoma, to attend a tree-planting ceremony. They will plant seedlings at a site along the coastline, where there are plans to create a new forest to protect the land from wind and high tides. The trees will likely become symbols of the rebuilding of Fukushima.
The sources say the Emperor and the Empress are also considering a visit to northern islands of Hokkaido Prefecture, including Rishiri, in the summer.
In a video message released in August 2016, the Emperor says he has felt that his travels to various places throughout Japan, in particular, to remote places and islands, are important acts of the Emperor as the symbol of the State.
The Imperial couple visited remote islands of Kagoshima Prefecture in 2017.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will press forward with reforms, looking ahead to 2020 and beyond. His remarks could be an indication of his intent to seek another term as the head of the main governing party in September 2018.
In his New Year's message, Abe says Japan faces a critical situation that should truly be called a national crisis: namely, its dwindling birthrate alongside the aging society.
But he says the country is now accomplishing things it was unable to achieve, even during the period of rapid economic growth. Referring to his economic policy, Abe says that through Abenomics over the past 5 years, nominal GDP has grown to a record high. He says the future can be changed.
Abe says his government will boldly invest in the future of children, and dramatically reform the social security system into one that is oriented to all generations.
He also says his government will ensure peaceful daily lives for the Japanese people under any circumstances, as it advances resolute diplomacy.
Abe says he will execute the policies he pledged during the 2017 general election one by one. He adds that his Cabinet is determined to press forward vigorously with reforms in order to build a new nation.
If Abe is re-elected as President of the Liberal Democratic Party in September, he could become the country's longest-serving prime minister.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says there's a nuclear button on his desk at all times and he's ordered officials to mass-produce nuclear warheads and ballistic missiles to speed up their deployment.
State-run Korean Central Television broadcast Kim's New Year address on Monday. It's considered the year's state policy speech.
Kim said North Korea has achieved the historic goal of completing its nuclear force. He said the entire US is within range of its nuclear weapons and that means it is impossible for the United States to start a war against the North.
Kim also referred to next month's Olympics in South Korea, saying he hopes the event will be a success. He said North Korea is ready to send a delegation to the Winter Games and authorities from the 2 Koreas could meet soon to discuss the issue.
Kim said this year will be extremely significant, as it marks the 70th anniversary of the North's foundation and the South is set to host the Olympics. He said the 2 Koreas should mend ties, and repeated his call for the South to cancel joint military drills with the US.

Health Ministry officials estimate that about 600,000 couples tied the knot in 2017 in Japan, the fewest since the end of World War Two.
They say the figure is down by about 13,000 compared to 2016 and marks the fifth-straight year it has declined.
Officials believe that a decrease in the population of young people is a major factor.
Last year, 212,000 couples filed for divorce, the fewest in 20 years.
Calculations show that a couple married every 52 seconds while a couple divorced every 2 minutes and 29 seconds.
The officials say Japan needs to find ways to stop the declining population and help more young people get married.

People in Japan have rung in the New Year with celebrations around the country.
Many crowded into the world-famous Shibuya scramble crossing in central Tokyo to count down to the New Year. It's a popular spot for young people and foreigners.
Hundreds of police officers patrolled the area and controlled the flow of the revelers.
Meanwhile, worshippers crowded a shrine in central Tokyo on New Year's Day to pray for good luck in 2018.
They waited in line at Meiji Jingu before the clock struck midnight.
When a drum was pounded to signal the arrival of the New Year, people threw monetary offerings into a fenced-in area and offered prayers.
Visitors can buy arrow amulets and good-luck charms, and also draw fortune-telling slips.
Meiji Jingu officials say that in the first 3 days of January they expect 3 million visitors. That's likely to be more worshippers during the New Year period than any other shrine or temple in Japan.
Just outside of Tokyo, Kawasaki Daishi Temple is crowded with thousands of visitors. Over the next few days many others will come to pray for the health of their families in the New Year.
