North Korea says it will officially take part in the upcoming PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games in South Korea.
The offer was made in the first inter-Korean talks in over 2 years at the shared border village of Panmunjom on Tuesday.
South Korea's Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-Sung said the North expressed its intention to send a high-level delegation, athletes and a cheering squad to the Games.
Chun said that in the talks the South proposed that the two sides make a joint entrance and for the North to send a delegation and cheering squad to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
South Korea also proposed military talks to ease tensions and meetings of Red Cross officials to organize reunions of families separated by the Korean War.
The North reportedly said it will hold talks to resolve issues.
It's unknown whether the North attached any conditions to its participation in the Games.

The Japanese government has welcomed this week's inter-Korean talks but will call for increased international pressure on Pyongyang.
The first inter-Korean talks in over 2 years will start Tuesday at the truce village of Panmunjom.
The dialogue will likely focus on North Korea's possible participation in the upcoming PyeongChang Olympics.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe welcomed Pyongyang's renewed engagement but said talks for the sake of talks are meaningless.
He said the dialogue will only be worthwhile if the North commits to taking concrete steps toward scrapping its nuclear and missile programs in a verifiable and irreversible way.
The head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, Kenji Kanasugi, met with a high-ranking South Korean foreign ministry official in Seoul on Monday.
Kanasugi suggested to the official that the inter-Korean talks are a result of increasing pressure on Pyongyang. They agreed to continue working together with the US on the matter.
There is concern within the Japanese government that Pyongyang's attempt to mend inter-Korean ties may be aimed at creating a rift between Japan, the US and South Korea.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha says her government will not renegotiate the 2015 agreement with Japan on those referred to as comfort women.
Last month, a South Korean government task force concluded that the agreement to finally and irreversibly resolve the issue does not sufficiently take into account the views of surviving victims.
President Moon Jae-in described the deal as flawed and incapable of resolving the matter.
Kang on Tuesday criticized the agreement for not properly reflecting the women's thoughts.
But she said it is undeniable that the 2 governments formally reached the agreement and it would not be renegotiated.
Kang asked Japan to continue to help the victims regain their honor and dignity, and to heal their hearts. She said what the victims want is a voluntary, sincere apology.
The Japanese government provided one billion yen, or about 9 million US dollars, to a fund set up by the South Korean government to support the women.
Kang said the South Korean government will create its own budget instead.
The Moon administration had to strike a balance between strong domestic opposition to the agreement and diplomatic ties with Japan.
But Moon's claim that the issue remains unresolved could still be a stumbling block.

Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono says it is unacceptable that South Korea wants the country to take new measures on the issue of those referred to as comfort women.
Speaking to reporters, Kono referred to South Korea's announcement on Tuesday about its new policy on the issue.
Kono said a 2015 bilateral agreement to settle the issue finally and irreversibly is a promise between the two countries. He said it is an international and universal principle that such promises must be kept even if a new government takes power.
Kono also called the agreement an essential foundation on which the two countries cooperate in various fields at a time when both face threats from North Korea.
Kono said he will ask Seoul to explain a plan to prepare its own budget for supporting the women. Japan had provided about 9 million dollars for that purpose.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has apologized after a string of accidents and mishaps involving its military helicopters in Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan.
Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera urged Mattis to take measures to prevent a recurrence when they spoke on the phone on Tuesday.
The latest developments have reignited concern and protests among residents in Okinawa.
On Saturday, a US helicopter made an emergency landing on a beach in Uruma City, followed by a similar incident in Yomitan Village on Monday.
Onodera called on Mattis to take steps to ensure thorough inspections and maintenance of aircraft is carried out.
Mattis vowed to take the issue seriously and deal with it.
The defense chiefs also referred to inter-Korean talks on Tuesday. They agreed on the importance of close cooperation among Japan, the United States and South Korea to maximize pressure on Pyongyang, which is accelerating nuclear and missile programs.

On Monday, an AH1 attack helicopter made an emergency landing at a waste disposal site in Yomitan Village. It returned to US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station on Tuesday morning, after being inspected by US military officials.
The waste disposal site is some 300 meters from residential homes and a resort hotel that can accommodate over 1,000 people.
Onaga told reporters that he is at a loss for words. He criticized the Japanese government for its inability to address the issue.
On Saturday, another US military helicopter made an emergency landing on a beach in Okinawa's Uruma City.

The Washington Post has reported that US Special Counsel Robert Mueller is likely to seek an interview with President Donald Trump.
Mueller has been investigating the Trump camp's possible involvement in Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential election.
The Washington Post said on Monday that the special counsel raised the issue of interviewing Trump at a meeting in late December with the president's lawyers.
It reported that Mueller's team could interview Trump soon, possibly within the next several weeks, on a limited portion of questions.
The newspaper said that Trump's attorneys are reluctant to let the president sit for open-ended, face-to-face questioning without clear parameters.
It added that the attorneys have discussed whether the president could provide written answers to some of the questions from Mueller's team.
Trump's attorneys and Mueller's office are expected to continue with their interview negotiations.
Mueller's probe has led to Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleading guilty to lying to the FBI over his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the US in 2016.
Russia has denied any meddling in the US election to help Trump win and the president insists there was no collusion.

North Korean seafood is still being sold in China's northeastern regions despite UN sanctions resolutions banning such trade.
Chinese retailers at a market in Jilin province near the border with the North were advertising "North Korean seafood", including live crabs.
Market sources say prices for crab smuggled from the North are less than half of those from Russia. Snow crabs were priced at about 18 dollars per kilogram and hairy crabs at around 24 dollars.
Seafood retailers on another street in the province shut down immediately after the UN Security Council adopted the sanctions resolution in August. But some have since reopened.
A shopkeeper said it was initially difficult to obtain North Korean seafood after the sanctions, but he can now purchase it every day. He said the products come from ports in Liaoning Province.
Traders say the seafood is transferred from North Korean fishing boats to Chinese vessels at sea and mainly smuggled into the city of Donggang in Liaoning Province.
The Chinese government insists it has been strictly implementing the sanctions resolution, so there is likely to be renewed attention on whether it will thoroughly crack down on the smuggling.

A video message by a "hibakusha" or atomic bomb survivor who died last year has been uploaded on the Internet, subtitled in 6 languages.
Sumiteru Taniguchi suffered severe burns in the bombing of Nagasaki, western Japan, in 1945. He dedicated his life to supporting survivors and the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The month before he died in August last year, aged 88, he made a video recording expressing joy at the adoption of a UN treaty to ban nuclear weapons. He said in the video he hopes non-nuclear powers will besiege nuclear-armed states to scrap the weapons without a moment's delay.
A civil group in Nagasaki co-chaired by Taniguchi added subtitles in English, Russian, Korean and 3 other languages.
The video has been uploaded on YouTube.
Another co-chair of the group Masao Tomonaga says Taniguchi sharply pointed out that the nuclear powers and Japan opposed the treaty. He adds he hopes many people around the world will see the video.
