Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly told US President Donald Trump that talks on North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang Olympics show that positive changes are emerging on the Korean peninsula.
State-run China Central Television says Xi spoke with Trump over the phone on Tuesday.
The report said Xi was speaking with the inter-Korean talks in mind and emphasized that countries must work together to ease tensions.
He said conditions should be created for dialogue and negotiations to resume.
Xi said peace and stability on the Korean peninsula is beneficial for each country, and that it is very important for the global community to observe solidarity on this issue.
His comments are apparently aimed at demonstrating that China is strengthening cooperation with the United States and the international community.
They are also believed to be directed at global foreign ministers who will meet in Canada on Tuesday to discuss North Korea. China and Russia will not attend.
Trump reportedly replied that the US values the important role China plays concerning North Korea and it will continue to strengthen communication and cooperation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed opposition to Japan's plan to deploy a new land-based missile defense system in the country.
Speaking at his annual news conference on Monday, Lavrov said the introduction of the system would cast a shadow over bilateral ties.
Japan has agreed to acquire the Aegis Ashore system from the US to counter North Korea's ballistic missile threats.
Lavrov said the system could be mounted with offensive weapons and used for attacks. He also said he doubted Japan would be in charge of operating it.
He said he isn't aware of an example in which the US handed over control of weapons it deployed in other countries.
Russia's distrust of the US has grown since members of NATO went ahead with a plan to deploy a missile defense system in Europe, despite the 2015 nuclear deal struck between Iran and world powers.
Members of the US-led NATO said the system's introduction is aimed at dealing with threats from Iran.

Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera says the new land-based missile defense system Japan plans to introduce is purely defensive. He stressed it will not pose a threat to Russia and other countries.
He spoke to reporters on Tuesday following a remark by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov the day before.
Lavrov expressed opposition to Japan's plan, noting that the new system would cast a shadow over bilateral ties. He said it could be mounted with offensive weapons and used for attacks.
Onodera said the Aegis Ashore system is essential for Japan to protect its people and property from possible ballistic missile attacks, at a time when North Korea is accelerating its nuclear and missile programs.
He added that Japan will independently operate the system. He said he hopes to convey to Russia that it will not pose any threat to the country.
Onodera also referred to patrolling of vessels by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force in waters west of the Korean Peninsula. He said the action is aimed at steadily implementing the UN Security Council resolution to impose sanctions on North Korea jointly with the international community.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has expressed his opposition to a minister-level meeting on North Korea to be held in Canada on Tuesday.
At a news conference in Moscow on Monday, he referred to the meeting in Vancouver of foreign ministers from the US, Japan, South Korea and other countries on the North's nuclear and missile programs.
He said its goal is to create a mechanism to increase pressure on North Korea and that Russia will not participate in the meeting.
He added that Russia does not expect a productive outcome.
China also criticized the gathering. It says it will create divisions within the international community and harm joint efforts to resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. Beijing plans to skip the talks.
Russia and China have proposed that Pyongyang could freeze its nuclear and missile programs in return for a halt to large-scale military drills by the US and others.
Lavrov reiterated Russia's stance that the country aims to resume a dialogue among concerned parties after that proposal comes to pass.

A survey shows companies in Japan are aggressively investing in information technology, setting their eyes on new businesses such as the Internet of Things which connects appliances and devices via the Net.
The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, or JEITA, and a research firm polled some 300 firms last year.
Fifty-two percent of respondents said they are increasing IT investment. That's up from 40 percent in the previous survey in 2013.
The firms were also asked about their objectives. Multiple answers were allowed.
Those which cited cost-cutting efforts, such as going paperless, dropped to 32 percent, from 48 percent.
By contrast, companies investing in developing new information technologies, products and services jumped to 27 percent, from just one percent.
Internet of Things technology and fintech that combines IT and financial services are among them.
Asked what they think is a key to competitiveness, 28 percent cited investment in research and development, up from 15 percent. Twenty-five percent cited investment in information systems, up from 15 percent.
Junichi Azuma of JEITA says the style of corporate IT investment is shifting from defensive to offensive. He says putting IT to good use is needed to stay ahead of global competitors.

Japan's environment minister has met with the chief of the country's largest business group to discuss the issue of global warming. He says companies may need to reconsider exporting coal-fired power plants.
The group's executives didn't share the same view.
Environment Minister Masaharu Nakagawa met Sadayuki Sakakibara, chairman of Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren.
Nakagawa said many industrialized countries are moving to phase out coal and that Japan's exports of power plants using the fossil fuel are raising eyebrows.
He added that Japanese businesses could face difficulty raising funds and be left out of global supply chains unless they shift away from using coal.
Sakakibara simply responded that he recognized the issue as an important challenge.
Keidanren officials say exporting Japan's efficient and energy-saving coal power technology will actually help stem global warming. They also say the power plants are necessary to maintain technologies and personnel in energy-related sectors.

Japanese authorities have found 7 male bodies in a wooden boat that washed ashore last week on the Sea of Japan coast. They believe the boat came from North Korea.
The boat was spotted last Wednesday in the city of Kanazawa, in Ishikawa Prefecture. The partially skeletonized body of a man was also found lying nearby on the shore.
Police and Japan Coast Guard officials found the bodies of 7 men when they searched inside the boat on Monday. The search had been delayed by bad weather and high waves.
Authorities are investigating the identities of the seven and the cause of their deaths.
They are checking whether there is any connection to the body found earlier.
Officials also found a badge with portraits of the late North Korean leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, and a box of tobacco with Korean lettering on it.
Many wooden boats believed to be from North Korea have washed ashore or been found drifting off the Sea of Japan coast. A record 104 such cases were confirmed in 2017.
