North Korea says it will change the founding anniversary of its military to February 8th, the day before the PyeongChang Winter Olympics open in South Korea.
The North's ruling party newspaper Rodong Sinmun announced the decision by the party's Central Committee Political Bureau on Tuesday.
Until now, the foundation of the Korean People's Army was marked on April 25th, the day the country's late founder Kim Il Sung reportedly marshalled anti-Japanese forces in 1932.
February 8th is the day when the military was officially founded in 1948.
South Korean sources say the North may celebrate with a military parade in central Pyongyang, on the day before the PyeongChang Games start.
The sources say satellite imagery shows troops and vehicles drilling at a military base outside the capital.
They say the embassies of nations friendly to the country have received invitations to a ceremony on February 8th.

US Vice President Mike Pence says his country will relocate its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem by the end of 2019. But the announcement has triggered strong opposition from the Palestinians.
His speech to the Israeli parliament on Monday comes after President Donald Trump's decision last month to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
It marked the first time the US has revealed the timing of the embassy's relocation.
Pence and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later issued a joint statement highlighting their commitment to strengthening ties in the face of Islamic extremists and Iran.
A senior official of the Palestine Liberation Organization criticized the move saying the messianic discourse of Pence is a gift to extremists. He said that the announcement has proven that the US is part of the problem rather than the solution.
The official added that: "His message to the rest of the world is clear: Violate international law and resolutions and the US will reward you."
Palestinians are calling for massive rallies on Tuesday to demonstrate their anger against the US move.

The International Monetary Fund has revised upward its forecast for the US economy in 2018, citing President Donald Trump's tax cuts.
The IMF released its latest global outlook on Monday, ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
It says the US economy will grow by 2.7% this year. That's a 0.4 percentage point increase from the IMF's previous update in October.
The fund says tax reforms, including cuts in corporate levies, will give a short-term boost to America's economy.
The IMF also says Japan will grow by 1.2% and Germany by 2.3%. Both figures are half-point upward revisions.
The fund says the global economy will remain on a firm path to growth.
But it cautions that the Federal Reserve may speed up the pace of credit tightening if the US job market improves amid signs of inflation. That could dampen stock prices and other assets.
The IMF also warns that the Trump administration's protectionist policies aimed at bringing jobs back to the US could pose trade barriers.

The Bank of Japan has decided to maintain its massive easing measures at current levels, in a bid to meet the target of 2-percent inflation.
The central bank said on Tuesday after wrapping up a 2-day meeting that it would continue to focus on managing short- and long-term interest rates.
It said it would stick with a short-term interest rate of minus 0.1 percent on portions of deposits from commercial banks.
The target yield for the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond will be kept at about 0 percent. To do this, the bank will continue to buy government bonds at an annual pace of about 80 trillion yen, or about 720 billion dollars.
In 2013, the central bank and the government issued a joint statement, setting a goal of a 2-percent year-on-year rise in overall prices in a quest to end deflation.
But recent data shows that inflation has not yet reached even one percent.
Still, the Bank of Japan maintained its expectation of hitting 2-percent inflation around fiscal 2019, as it left its inflation forecasts unchanged for the next few years.

Online retail giant Amazon has opened an unmanned store at its headquarters in Seattle. It's part of the company's bid to boost its brick-and-mortar business.
The convenience store sells beverages and snacks. Customers download a smartphone app to enter, then pick their purchases off the shelves. They are billed after they leave on credit cards registered in advance.
Dozens of cameras and sensors on the ceiling and shelves monitor the customers.
Amazon says the store uses image recognition and machine-learning technologies to understand their behavior.
