Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he and US President Donald Trump believe irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a premise of meaningful dialogue with North Korea.
Abe spoke with Trump by telephone on Wednesday night.
Abe later told reporters that they exchanged candid opinions, mainly on the North Korean situation.
He said the world must face the fact that North Korea is continuing its nuclear and missile programs.
The Japanese leader said the two completely agreed on the importance of applying maximum pressure on Pyongyang until it asks for dialogue.
Abe said they discussed ways to bring about the denuclearization of North Korea.
He stated that they confirmed the Japan-US alliance will never waver.

US Vice President Mike Pence has stressed that the US policy of pressuring North Korea remains unchanged until the North takes action toward denuclearization. But he also indicated the need to make the North understand this policy.
Speaking in Washington on Wednesday, Pence harshly criticized North Korea as "the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet."
He reiterated that the US does not rule out a military option to deal with Pyongyang's nuclear and missile threat and keeps pressuring the country in coordination with Japan and South Korea.
Pence said the US and the international community will not change their posture unless the North completely, verifiably and permanently abandons its nuclear and missile programs.
In an interview with the Washington Post, Pence reportedly hinted at the possibility of the US holding talks with the North, by stating if the North wants to talk, the US will talk.
In Wednesday's speech, Pence said the US wants to make sure North Korea understands the US stance and that if there is an opportunity for talks, President Donald Trump has made it clear he always believes in talking.
But Pence added talking is not negotiation and is only aimed at understanding each other.
Pence also touched on his attendance at the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister was also attending.
Pence said he ignored Kim Yo Jong because he thought it improper to give any attention to someone who is not only the sister of the dictator, but also is the leader of the North's propaganda effort.

Deputy leaders of Japan and the US have agreed to meet in the months ahead for another round of economic talks.
It will be the third such meeting between Taro Aso and Mike Pence since President Donald Trump took office.
Aso said during a Diet session that he discussed the matter with Pence during his visit to Japan earlier this month. He said he wants to hold the meeting in April, but the American side prefers May or June.
The two held their last round of talks in October. They agreed to look at ways to increase US auto exports to Japan and to cooperate on American infrastructure development.
Officials gathered last month to sort out an agenda for the next session. One issue that could be up for discussion is trade including Japan's emergency restrictions on US frozen beef imports.

Day 6 in Pyeongchang meant a medal haul for Japan. Skiers, skaters and snowboarders all made the podium, though the first gold remains elusive.
Speed-skater Nao Kodaira was tipped to take gold in the 1,000 meters. She's the current world record holder. She was in the lead at the 600 meter mark. But faded in the final seconds and finished second.
Kodaira said, "I checked the condition of the ice and I did my best."
Teammate Miho Takagi placed third, 2 days after winning silver in the 1,500 meters.
Takagi said, "I was able to compete better than expected. I'm feeling proud of myself."
Dutch skater Jorien ter Mors took the gold and set a new Olympic record in the process.
In the Nordic Combined Normal Hill, Japan's Akito Watabe was hoping to improve on the silver he won in Sochi.
But when the snow settled, the result was an exact rerun of 4 years ago. Watabe came second. Germany's Eric Frenzel took gold.
Watabe said, "I feel 50% joy and relief that I got a medal, and 50% frustration that it wasn't the gold I was aiming for."
The men's snowboarding halfpipe saw US legend Shaun White beat rising Japanese star Ayumu Hirano to the gold. And the teenager wasn't smiling about winning silver.
Hirano said, "I can accept the result but, in some part, I still have regrets about the race. So I really want to take part in Beijing 2022, and win next time."
Thursday's action includes the men's 10,000 meter speed skating and the men's snowboard cross event.

Police in Florida say that the 19-year-old suspect in Wednesday's school shooting rampage was carrying an assault rifle and a large amount of ammunition.
At least 17 people were killed in the shooting at a senior high school in Parkland, about 70 kilometers north of Miami, in the afternoon. Police and hospital officials say more than 10 other people were injured, and 3 of them are in critical condition.
Police arrested Nikolas Cruz, a former student. When the police found him near the scene of the shooting, he was carrying an AR15 assault rifle and multiple ammunition magazines.
Local media reports say Cruz also wore a gas mask and carried smoke grenades with him.
Eyewitnesses said Cruz had apparently set off a fire alarm at the school before opening fire. Media reports quoted a police officer as saying that he might have used the trick to lure students out of classrooms.
His former classmates remember him as a troubled man who would set off the fire alarm day after day. He was expelled for disciplinary reasons.
Media reports also said that Cruz had posted photos of himself carrying guns on the social media site Instagram.
Police are continuing to investigate his motive.

Japan Display has reported a huge loss for the April to December period.
The struggling LCD maker says it will likely book a net loss in fiscal 2017 for a fourth-straight year, as it continues streamlining efforts.
Executives say sales in the 9-month period dropped more than 12 percent from a year earlier to about 5.3 billion dollars. The net loss ballooned more than 10-fold to about 940 million dollars.
Profits from LCDs for smartphones shrank in the face of intensifying competition from Chinese makers.
The company also booked a loss of about 140 million dollars on costs to cover streamlining, such as early retirement for workers.
The executives are forecasting a fall in sales of 20 percent for the whole business year that runs to March.
Japan Display has been receiving support from a government-backed fund. Executives are considering seeking investment from other sources.

Experts of a Japanese government panel are calling for a change in the law that would ease rules on outdoor, video-generated advertising. The technology is called "projection mapping."
They say it can be an effective way to showcase the country's attractive features and technology ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
Video projectors throw images on buildings and natural landscapes for art, music and sporting events.
Local governments in Japan regulate such advertising. They decide on the rules regarding the sizes and locations of the projections.
Advertisers are asking officials to ease these regulations.
The experts from the government panel say they agree. They've drafted a report for the Infrastructure Ministry, which oversees a law on outdoor advertising.
The report says projection mapping should not be regulated as advertising. It recommends that officials draw up a minimum set of rules on how the technology is used. The panel members plan to submit their report by June.
