Japanese authorities have launched an on-site inspection of the virtual currency exchange Coincheck. Friday's move follows the theft of a massive amount of cryptocurrency at the exchange.
Sources close to the matter say the Financial Services Agency wants to confirm whether the firm has enough money to repay affected customers. Coincheck has been saying it does.
However, the reimbursement is expected to total about 420 million dollars and the agency needs to know more about Coincheck's services, security measures and how customers' assets are stored.
The probe is unprecedented as it comes before Coincheck submits a response to a business-improvement order that the agency issued on Monday. The authorities have set a February 13th deadline for the executives to respond.
The order requires Coincheck to unravel the details of the theft, quickly reimburse the affected customers, and take thorough measures to prevent a recurrence.
Hackers targeted Coincheck's online platform on January 26th. More than 500 million dollars' worth of a cryptocurrency called NEM was stolen.
The Tokyo-based company has suspended transactions and withdrawals of NEM and other cryptocurrencies, as employees try to pinpoint the cause of the heist. But it remains unclear when customers can expect compensation or when services will resume.

The hacked virtual currency exchange, Coincheck, says it will respond to the authorities' probe sincerely.
The Financial Services Agency launched on-site inspections of the Tokyo-based operator of the digital currency exchange on Friday, following a massive theft of customer assets on January 26th.
A Coincheck spokesperson told NHK that the firm remains confident that it can reimburse the affected customers, although it cannot say when. The reimbursement is likely to total about 420 million dollars.
When asked if Coincheck had been managing customers' funds separately from the firm's, the spokesperson said it is confirming the facts and that it will give an answer after the confirmation.

A group of lawyers says it is preparing a lawsuit against virtual currency exchange Coincheck in connection with the computer hack that stole a massive amount of digital currency last week.
The team of 5 lawyers says about 10 customers of the Tokyo-based company have consulted them. The lawyers say they will file a lawsuit at the Tokyo District Court as early as mid-February.
The lawyers say they will study details of the suit, including how the plaintiffs should be reimbursed. They add that they will allow other victims to join the suit.
Hackers gained illegal access to Coincheck's online platform on January 26th and stole more than 500 million dollars' worth of cryptocurrency called NEM.
Two days later, the exchange said it would use its own funds to reimburse about 260,000 customers who were affected. But it remains unknown when the reimbursement will take place.

A Japanese budget airline is having second thoughts about accepting virtual money.
Peach Aviation says it's thinking about canceling a plan to accept such money for ticket payments.
Officials of the firm say the recent hack on the exchange service Coincheck and recent fluctuations in cryptocurrency markets made them question the reliability of digital currency.
Peach Aviation said last May that it planned to accept bitcoin. The firm hoped to attract more foreign travelers as transaction fees for the currency can be much cheaper than those for cash, and bitcoin transactions can be done on smartphones.
An increasing number of retailers and restaurants in Japan are considering accepting virtual currencies. But recent events have led to calls for more regulation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and British Prime Minister Theresa May have agreed to further enhance bilateral ties in trade, investment, and other fields. They also confirmed they will cooperate in promoting Beijing's Belt and Road initiative.
China's state-run Xinhua news agency reports that Xi told May in Beijing on Thursday that the Belt and Road initiative, which seeks to create a large economic zone, is open, transparent, and mutually beneficial. He said China and Britain should cooperate at a higher level within the framework.
May said the initiative has far-reaching global influence. She expressed hope that the 2 countries can cooperate in this regard.
The 2 leaders agreed that their countries will enhance cooperation in a wide range of fields to embrace a "Golden Era" of bilateral ties.
But the British government says May pointed out the importance of international standards and transparency to ensure the initiative's success.
British companies traveling with May are expected to sign deals worth about 12 billion dollars with the Chinese side.
Observers say Britain has shown its understanding of the Chinese initiative ahead of its exit from the European Union.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has warned against China's growing economic presence in Latin America.
Tillerson gave a speech in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, ahead of a 5-nation trip to Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Jamaica.
He said China is using economic statecraft to pull the region into its orbit, and warned Latin American countries to avoid excessive economic reliance on China.
He said Latin America does not need new imperial powers that seek only to benefit their own people.
Tillerson said the United States stands in vivid contrast, suggesting that it will help develop Latin American countries while respecting international norms.
This will be Tillerson's first visit to the region as Secretary of State.
Attention is focused on whether he can promote bilateral ties with Latin American nations as President Donald Trump is seeking the construction of a wall along the US-Mexico border and is also promoting protectionist trade policies.
