North Korea's envoy to working-level talks with the United States over Pyongyang's nuclear program says the negotiations have broken off. But the US says it had good discussions with the North.

Kim Myong Gil met US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun near the Swedish capital, Stockholm, on Saturday.

The hours-long discussions were the first of their kind since the summit between the two nations ended without agreement in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, in February.

Speaking to reporters after the talks, Kim said the US stuck to its conventional stance and came to the negotiating table with nothing to offer. His comment indicates the US delegation did not present proposals that are acceptable to North Korea.

Kim said whether Pyongyang will continue to halt nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles depends on Washington.

He indicated that his side wants the US delegation to suspend dialogue and come up with proposals by the end of the year that will help to break the deadlock.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus says North Korea's comments do not reflect the content or spirit of more than eight hours of talks. She says the US brought creative ideas and had good discussions with the North. She added that the US accepted the Swedish host's invitation to return to Stockholm again in two weeks to continue discussions.

In previous talks, Washington demanded Pyongyang first take substantive measures for denuclearization.

But North Korea wanted an easing of sanctions in return for each denuclearization step. Pyongyang also sought guarantees to maintain its political system.

The leaders of China and North Korea exchanged celebratory telegrams on Sunday, as their countries mark 70 years since establishing diplomatic ties.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported the exchange between Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Chinese leader reportedly referred to how he had met Kim last year and this year a total of five times, and said that led bilateral relations to a new historic stage. Xi then stressed his hope to push forward with developing long-term and healthy bilateral ties.

In response, Kim expressed his resolve to strengthen the traditional friendship between the countries, describing that as North Korea's unwavering policy.

Kim said he would use relations to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the world.

Observers say North Korea hopes to strengthen ties with China amid stalled denuclearization talks with the United States.

There has been speculation that the two countries may mark the 70th anniversary with major events, including mutual visits by their leaders. But details of how they will actually celebrate are still unknown.

Six wild elephants were found dead at a Thai national park on Saturday, after apparently falling into a waterfall while trying to save each other.

The incident occurred at Khao Yai National Park, northeast of the capital, Bangkok.

Park officials say among the six dead elephants was a calf around three years old. They believe the calf slipped and fell into the waterfall, and the others then came to the rescue but plunged to their deaths.

Two more elephants were found alive on a nearby cliff, where they were apparently trying to save the others. They have been rescued by authorities.

Khao Yai National Park covers an area of more than 2,000 square kilometers and is home to about 300 wild elephants.

Similar incidents have occurred at the waterfall, which is known as Hell's Fall. In 1992, eight elephants died after falling.

Japanese police and government officials have taken part in a rehearsal for the Imperial procession scheduled for October 22 following Emperor Naruhito's enthronement ceremony.

Members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Cabinet Office rehearsed their roles for about an hour on Sunday morning. Streets on the procession route were closed off.

A motorcade of about 50 vehicles, including police motorcycles with sidecars, proceeded at slow speed, on the right side of the street, which is the opposite side that cars normally drive on.

The parade on October 22 will start at the Imperial Palace and make its way to the Akasaka Estate, covering a route of about 4.6 kilometers.

The open-top limousine with the chrysanthemum emblem and the Imperial flag, which the Emperor and Empress will ride in for the parade, was not used in the rehearsal.

Barriers were set up along the streets to keep back spectators. Police lined the streets for security.

Officials say they checked the motorcade's speed and the distance between each vehicle. Police say they will continue preparations to ensure the parade is held smoothly.

A 74-year-old woman who lives nearby said there were more vehicles at the rehearsal than in a regular Imperial family motorcade. She said that security seems to be well-maintained and that she is hoping for the parade to take place without any incident.

Congolese doctor Mukwege has been helping rape victims for many years in his African country.

He talked with 87-year-old Sadae Kasaoka at the Peace Memorial Museum. She experienced the atomic bombing at the age of 12.

Kasaoka said the world would come to an end if a huge number of nuclear weapons were used. She said she wants many people to work for the elimination of nuclear arms, not just reducing their number.

Mukwege pledged to serve as an ambassador in relaying her message to the world.

He then toured the museum, which features a georama of Ground Zero along with victims' personal belongings. He wrote in the visitors' book that nuclear arms must be abolished.
