North Korea's military has indicated that it launched at least one ballistic missile in response to what it calls a military provocation by South Korea in a frontline area.

State-run Korean Central News Agency issued a spokesperson's statement shortly after 2 a.m. on Friday.

It says the South Korean military continued artillery fire for 10 hours on Thursday, and that North Korea carried out a "strong" military action in response.

The statement says the North Korean military sent a stern warning to the South Korean military, whose reckless actions have created tensions in frontline areas.

Japan's Defense Minister says North Korea launched at least one ballistic missile eastward early on Friday morning.

Minister Hamada Yasukazu said the missile was fired at around 1:47 a.m., Japan time, from near Pyongyang. He said it is believed to have fallen into the Sea of Japan east of the Korean Peninsula, outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

Hamada said the ministry estimates that the missile reached an altitude of about 50 kilometers and traveled around 650 kilometers. He also said that the missile might have been a model capable of following irregular flight paths.

He said there were no reports of damage to Japanese ships or aircraft.

Hamada said that North Korea's actions, including its persistent launches and unilaterally escalating provocations, threaten the peace and security of Japan and the international community, and that Japan cannot tolerate them.

He also said that Japan has lodged a protest with North Korea through its embassy in Beijing.

Hamada said conclusively determining the intention of the North's missile launches was difficult. But he pointed out that Pyongyang has claimed it needs to have its own nuclear deterrence to maintain its regime against the US threat. He said this may be why the country is focusing on developing ballistic missiles and improving operational capabilities as the method of transporting nuclear weapons.

Friday's launch marks the 27th such incident this year. The Defense Ministry is gathering and analyzing information, and said it has not ruled out the possibility that more than one missile was launched on Friday.

A Hong Kong media outlet has reported that a rare political protest took place in Beijing despite heavy security in the run-up to the Chinese Communist Party's National Congress.

The article said at least one person hung banners on an overpass in the capital on Thursday with messages such as, "We don't need the Cultural Revolution. We need reform," and "We don't need PCR tests. We need meals."

The report says flames and smoke broke out at the site. An NHK crew visited the location on Thursday afternoon and discovered a mark suggesting a fire had been put out.

The article is believed to have been removed as it can no longer be found online.

The congress, which takes place every five years, begins on Sunday. Analysts say that President Xi Jinping is certain to secure a rare third term as the party's top leader.

In Pakistan, a fire on a bus carrying people displaced by the country's severe floods has left at least 18 dead, including children.

The passengers were evacuees relocated to near the country's biggest city Karachi.

The bus was traveling through Sindh Province on Wednesday night when fire engulfed the vehicle. Local police say about 50 people were on board.

Many were apparently heading home to areas where the floodwaters had receded.

One passenger said, "Suddenly the bus caught fire. A few passengers were safe, but many of my family members didn't make it."

Police suspect the fire started in the air conditioner.

Heavy rain and flooding since June has left more than 1,700 people dead and upturned the lives of tens of millions. A third of the country was underwater at one point. Many areas are still affected.

Meanwhile, Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai visited Sindh on Wednesday and called for continued global support. She heard first-hand about the experiences of people displaced from their homes.

She also met with local government officials and told them how students' educations have also been disrupted.
