The Japanese government says a North Korean missile has flown over Japan and fallen into the ocean.

Officials believe the ballistic missile flew over the country's northeast before falling outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

They say it flew for about 20 minutes over a distance of more than 4,000 kilometers.

It may have fallen into waters more than 3,000 kilometers east of Japan.

Officials said the missile was launched from a location in North Korea at about 7:22 a.m. Japan time.

They said it was heading towards Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures in northern Japan.

The Japanese government issued an alert through the nationwide emergency warning system.

It told people in the areas to take shelter in sturdy buildings or underground.

People in northern Japan were alerted with this siren.
About 20 minutes after the launch, officials said the missile may have fallen into the Pacific Ocean.

It's the 7th time ever that a ballistic missile has flown over Japan.

The defense ministry says it is the 23rd time that North Korea has test-fired missiles this year.

Japan's prime minister slammed the launch.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio says "We strongly condemn the launch as an outrageous act. In response to it, I have instructed officials to check for possible damage caused by falling objects, to thoroughly collect and analyze information, and cooperate with allies.

Japan's largest rail operator halted bullet train service in northern Japan as a precaution. Transportation officials also issued a warning to air traffic around the country.

The Japanese government says a projectile that appears to be a North Korean ballistic missile has likely been launched toward the Pacific Ocean. The Japan Coast Guard says the projectile has already fallen.

Japan's Defense Ministry says the latest launch marks the 23rd time North Korea has fired missiles this year.

Pyongyang has recently carried out four launches within a space of one week from late September to early October.

Of the 22 past launches, 20 are presumed or suspected to have involved ballistic missiles. The rest are believed to be long-range cruise missiles.

In the most recent launch last Saturday, Japan's Defense Ministry says two ballistic missiles were fired eastward from near the western coast of North Korea.

It says the missiles could have flown in irregular trajectories, and both are believed have landed in waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Former Vice Admiral of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force Koda Yoji says preparations should be made for the possibility that North Korea's missile range will be extended.

Koda said that if reports are accurate, North Korea successfully flew a missile over a distance of more than 4,000 kilometers -- enough to carry a nuclear warhead to the US territory of Guam without running out of fuel.

Koda said a missile would need to travel 10,000 kilometers to reach the US mainland, but preparations should be in place in case the range is extended.

A group of German parliamentarians in Taipei has expressed support for Taiwan should it come under military threat.

The delegation met Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday.

Tsai thanked Germany, which in August compiled the Group of Seven Foreign Ministers' Statement on Preserving Peace and Stability Across the Taiwan Strait as the group's chair.

The text was released in response to China's "aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait." The Chinese military launched large-scale drills in the seas and skies off Taiwan following a visit there by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The cross-party delegation of six is headed by German-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group Chairman Klaus-Peter Willsch of the opposition Christian Democratic Union.

Willsch said Germany's Parliament supports strengthening cooperation, exchange and in particular diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

He said parliamentary debates and issued statements outline the lawmakers' eagerness to support Taiwan should it come under military threat.

Lawmakers from other nations, including France, continue to go to Taiwan despite Beijing's strong opposition to Pelosi's visit in August.

Taiwan's foreign ministry welcomed the latest visit, saying yet another key European nation expressed its unwavering support for Taiwan through concrete action.

Marines of the United States and the Philippines have started joint drills. Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force and, for the first time, South Korean Marines are also taking part.

The acting chief of the Philippine Navy, Rear Admiral Caesar Bernard Valencia, spoke to representatives of the nations in Manila at the start of the 12-day exercise on Monday.

He expressed hope that they can work together to protect the values of freedom, democracy and rule-based order to weather the rapidly changing security environment.

Personnel will conduct landing exercises aimed at recapturing islands and check ways to respond to nuclear and chemical weapons.

From Japan, an amphibious rapid deployment brigade is taking part.

Miyamoto Shinsuke of the Ground Self-Defense Force stressed the importance of conducting an exercise with the South Korean military.

He said the GSDF wants to contribute to the realization of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Last Friday, Japan, the US and South Korea conducted their first joint exercise in the Sea of Japan since December 2017.

The latest drills are believed to be aimed at stressing their cooperation as China steps up its activities in the South China Sea.

Renowned Japanese comic artists are holding an online charity auction to support people affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The project was proposed by a Japanese manga artist, Chiba Tetsuya, who is known for the boxing manga series "Ashita no Joe."

More than one hundred leading manga artists joined him, including Morikawa George, who wrote "Hajime no Ippo," and Fukumoto Nobuyuki, the creator of "Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji."

The artists drew a total of 146 cards with the theme of peace. They will go under the hammer in three installments. Some of the works are collaborations featuring popular characters.

Chiba said he wanted to do something as a manga artist to encourage more people to support those who are enduring hardships.

The auction will run through October 23. The organizer says the proceeds will be sent to the international non-governmental organization, Doctors Without Borders.

In Japanese professional baseball, Tokyo Yakult Swallows slugger Murakami Munetaka has racked up his 56th home run of the season, topping the record held by legend Oh Sadaharu.

The 22-year-old Murakami blasted the homer in the team's last game of the regular season on Monday.

It lifted him to second place in the number of home runs in a Nippon Professional Baseball season. The all-time record of 60 homers was achieved in 2013 by Wladimir Balentien.

Murakami also earned a Triple Crown of batting average, runs batted in, and home runs in the Central League. He is the youngest NPB player to achieve that feat.
