South Korean military officials say a group of 12 North Korean warplanes has flown in formation over a southwestern part of North Korea and presumably held firing exercises.

The officials say eight fighter jets and four bombers flew over North Hwanghae Province for more than one hour from around 2 p.m. on Thursday. They say the planes are thought to have staged air-to-surface firing drills.

The officials say the aircraft crossed the so-called special reconnaissance line. The South Korean military set the special reconnaissance line north of the inter-Korean military demarcation line to monitor the activities of North Korean warplanes.

The officials say the military scrambled some 30 jets, including F-15Ks, on a surveillance mission in response.

They add it is rare for North Korean military planes to carry out a formation flight south of the reconnaissance line.

The flight follows North Korea's latest missile launch. The country fired two short-range ballistic missiles from the Samsok area in Pyongyang toward the Sea of Japan Thursday morning.

South Korean media report the North Korean flight may have been in protest of a joint drill conducted by Japan, the United States and South Korea in the Sea of Japan on Thursday. The exercise simulated how to respond to ballistic missile launches.

A former police officer went on a rampage at a daycare center in Thailand on Thursday. Thirty-five people were killed, including more than 20 children. About 10 others were injured.

Police say the former police officer burst into a daycare center in the northeastern province of Nongbua Lamphu. The assailant began shooting at the children and staff members. He also attacked them with a knife. He then drove off in a car and hit several people who were standing nearby.

Police say children between the ages of 2 and 5 were at the center.

Workers at the facility say the children were taking a nap when the attacker kicked open the door and entered.

Police say the assailant later went home and took his own life, after he killed his wife and son.

Thai media outlets report that the 34-year-old former police officer was fired earlier this year for drug possession. They say he was a drug addict. They also say that his son attended the daycare center.

Local authorities have announced that King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida plan to visit the center and meet the victims' families on Friday.

In Thailand, at least 36 people -- including 24 children -- are dead after a former police officer went on a rampage at a child care center on Thursday. Investigators are trying to determine his motive.

Police say the shooter burst into the facility in the country's northeast around lunchtime. Children between the ages of 2 and 5 were inside.

He began shooting at them and staff members. He also used a knife. He then drove off in a car, hitting several pedestrians. Police say about 10 people were injured. They say the assailant later went home and killed his wife and child before killing himself.

Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said this is probably the worst tragedy to ever happen in his country.

Thai news outlets report that the 34-year-old man had a drug addiction and was fired from the police earlier this year for drug possession. They also say his son attended the child care center.

On Friday, more than 500 people, including families of the victims, gathered near the center. They mourned together, praying and leaving flowers.

One man was mourning his wife who worked at the facility and died in the attack. She was set to give birth next month.

Seksan Srirach said, "I cried until there were no tears left. The tears run inside my mind. My wife is gone for good, my child gone for good, but I have to keep fighting. If I do not fight, my wife and kid will worry."

The massacre sent shockwaves across Thailand.

Indonesian police say six people, including police officers, will face criminal charges relating to a stampede at a soccer stadium that killed more than 100 people.

The incident occurred last Saturday after a professional soccer match in Malang, East Java province. The police fired tear gas after fans of the losing team stormed the pitch. This caused a stampede of panicked spectators.

Police say at least 131 people have been confirmed dead. The government says 35 are aged between three and 17.

The national police chief told reporters on Thursday that three police officers would face criminal charges. He said one league executive and two officials in charge of security from the host team would also be charged.

The police officers are believed to have ordered the use of tear gas despite a ban on its use inside stadiums, while the league executive is suspected of neglecting stadium safety checks.

The security officers are said to have allowed more spectators than allowed by the capacity limit and hindered the evacuation process. Both are suspected of negligence resulting in death.

Meanwhile, the government has set up a special task force to look into the cause of the incident. It says it hopes to complete the investigation within a month.
