Indonesian authorities say at least 174 people were killed after a professional soccer league match in East Java province ended in a riot on Saturday.

Police say supporters from the losing home team invaded the pitch and officers fired tear gas.

They say some suffocated and others were trampled, leaving at least 174 supporters and police officers dead and about 180 others injured.

Some fans reportedly turned violent after Arema FC, based in East Java's Malang, suffered its loss against its rival, Persebaya Surabaya.

Police say that after tear gas was unleashed to stop the supporters, people rushed to an exit gate, triggering a stampede.

The Reuters news agency says it "appears to be one of the world's worst stadium disasters."

The Indonesian top league BRI Liga 1, to which Arema FC belongs, has suspended all games for a week following the incident.

The Football Association of Indonesian says an investigation has been launched.

Two Japanese players performed in the match, one each on both teams. Persebaya Surabaya's Japanese forward scored the winning goal.

Russia's defense ministry says its troops have withdrawn from the key stronghold of Lyman, which is located in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

The ministry made the announcement on Saturday. That was one day after President Vladimir Putin unilaterally annexed four eastern and southern Ukrainian regions, including Donetsk.

The ministry said that its troops were moved to more advantageous areas. It cited the threat that they could be encircled by Ukrainian forces as a reason.

Lyman has served as a key railway and transportation hub in Donetsk for Russia's forces, since they seized the city in May. The forces have also used it as a base from which to advance on other areas in the Donbas region.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military said on Saturday that its troops are closing in on the center of Lyman.

The Ukrainians are expected to retake the city now that Russia's forces have left it.

The Ukrainian troops are also expected to ramp up their counteroffensive in an effort to try to recapture other Russian strongholds in Donetsk and neighboring Luhansk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that his country will keep up its counteroffensive to win back territories.

Analysts say Russian President Vladimir Putin will now find it more difficult to achieve his goal, which is to take full control of the Donbas region.

Ukraine's state media has reported that at least 24 people, including 13 children, were killed in a Russian attack on a convoy of civilians in eastern Ukraine.

The state news agency quoted a statement from police in the Kharkiv region on Saturday.

The attack took place near Kupiansk, which Ukrainian forces recently took back in their counteroffensive.

Ukraine's security service says Russian troops fired at six cars and a truck. It released images of charred vehicles riddled with bullet holes.

Ukrainian authorities said on Friday that a separate attack on civilians traveling in cars in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia had killed at least 30 people.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has expressed concern after Ukraine's state-owned Energoatom announced that Russia has detained the director general of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said in a statement on Saturday, "Such a detention of any member of the plant staff would be a source of grave concern in itself, but also for its psychological impact and pressure on the rest of the staff -- which is detrimental to nuclear safety and security."

Grossi noted that the detained director general, Ihor Murashov, activates and leads the response to any on-site nuclear emergency.

He said, "His absence from duty in this way also has an immediate and serious impact on decision-making in ensuring the safety and security of the plant."

Grossi called for the swift release of the director general.

The Zaporizhzhia plant, which has been controlled by Russian forces since the early days of the invasion, has temporarily lost external power due to heavy shelling.

The IAEA says Grossi is continuing consultations and other efforts aimed at agreeing and implementing a nuclear safety and security zone around the plant. It says he is expected to travel to Ukraine and Russia in the coming week.

Key words : defense chief agreed

The defense chiefs of Japan, the United States and Australia have agreed to strengthen defense cooperation among the three countries.

Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles met in Hawaii on Saturday.

Hamada told his counterparts that close coordination among the three nations has never been more important to maintain and reinforce a free and open Indo-Pacific that is based on the rule of law.

The ministers confirmed that their countries will expand joint training and promote cooperation in the fields of defense equipment and technology.
This comes as China has been rapidly increasing its influence over Pacific Island nations.

Hamada talked about the Japanese government's plan to revise the National Security Strategy and related defense programs by the end of the year to drastically enhance the country's defense capabilities within five years.

He also said the government is determined to ensure that Japan's defense spending will be substantially increased.

The ministers agreed to align their countries' strategies.

Austin said at the meeting, "We are deeply concerned by China's increasingly aggressive bullying behavior in the Taiwan Strait and elsewhere in the region."

He added, "For decades, our three democracies have worked shoulder to shoulder as an anchor for stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and around the globe."

He said he was looking forward to strengthening the trilateral defense cooperation.

Hamada later told reporters that he conveyed Japan's concern over China's growing influence over Pacific Island nations such as the Solomon Islands.

He said he also conveyed Japan's determination to contribute to the peace and stability of the region by increasing its presence.

Hamada added that he talked about the importance of helping nations in the region to build up their defense capabilities, such as troop training in close coordination with the US and Australia.

Key words : research firm 6,700 food
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20221002_08/

A private research firm says that prices of about 6,700 food and beverage products will rise in Japan in October as manufacturers are faced with rising material costs and a weaker yen.

Teikoku Databank surveyed 105 major domestic food and beverage producers at the end of September.

The result shows that prices of 6,699 items will be increased in October. It is about 2.8 times as many price increases as there were in September.

The research firm notes that the prices of wheat and cooking oil have been on the rise since spring. It also points out that higher crude oil prices are causing price hikes of packaging materials and logistic costs. It says a weaker yen is also pushing up the cost of imported materials.

Alcoholic drinks and beverages top the list of categories with 2,991 items. It is followed by processed food such as canned food, ham, sausages and baby food with 1,819 items, and seasonings with 1,800 items.

The firm says prices of 20,665 items have been or will be raised this year, including those that have been raised multiple times. The average increase is 14 percent.

Teikoku Databank says that October seems to be the peak month for price hikes this year but new factors are emerging, such as rising prices of electricity, gas, animal feed and milk.

It says intermittent waves of price increases could occur in 2023 and onwards.

Japanese sake brewers and companies are promoting their products at an annual fair in France.

The eighth "Salon du Sake," one of the largest sake fairs in Europe, opened in Paris on Saturday.

This year's event features more than 400 brands of Japanese sake. Brewers from the prefectures of Hiroshima and Niigata are among the participants.

Exports of the Japanese beverage to France have more than tripled over the past decade, with sales up more than five-fold.

Sylvain Huet, the head of the event's organizing group, said France is the fastest growing market for Japanese sake in Europe, and demand in the country could increase further.

A senior official of the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association, Miyake Kiyotsugu, took part in the fair. He said Japanese sake seems to be gaining popularity in France.

He said that wine sommeliers have learned to recommend sake to drink with French dishes.

Miyake also said that more and more brewers are putting labels in French on their bottles that explain how their products are made and what characteristics they have.

He said makers are also promoting various types of sake, such as cloudy or sparkling ones.

About 5,000 people are expected to visit the fair, which runs through Monday.
