The governor of the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk says two mass burial sites were found in Lyman. The city was liberated by Ukrainian forces earlier this month.

Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko posted on social media on Friday that one site has about 200 individual graves. The number buried in the other one is under investigation.

A similar mass grave was found in Izyum in the neighboring Kharkiv region in September after the city was recaptured from Russian forces. More than 400 bodies have been exhumed at that site.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message on Friday that Ukrainian troops liberated 776 square kilometers of territory in the country' east this week.

He said: "We will certainly come to the lands that were occupied by Russia earlier."

The British defense ministry said Friday that Ukrainian forces appear to have captured and used equipment Russian troops left. It said, "Over half of Ukraine's currently fielded tank fleet potentially consists of captured vehicles."

Meanwhile, the United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday adopted a resolution to appoint a special rapporteur on human rights in Russia.

The resolution expresses grave concerns about the deterioration of human rights in Russia. It cited severe restrictions on the freedom of expression, including crackdowns on civil society organizations and independent media.

The rapporteur will spend a year to investigate Russia's human rights situation and present a report to the council and the General Assembly.

Ukraine's parliament has adopted a resolution recognizing Japan's claim to Russian-held islands it calls the Northern Territories.

The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

On Friday, the Ukrainian parliament passed a resolution supporting Japan's position on the islands. It urges the international community to take all possible measures for the legal registration of the status of Japan's Northern Territories.

It calls on the United Nations, the European Parliament and other international organizations for consistent support and actions to establish the Northern Territories as Japan's.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video message on Friday that he has signed the relevant decree confirming Ukraine's respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Japan, including the Northern Territories, which are still under Russian occupation.

Zelenskyy said, "Russia has no right to these territories. Everyone in the world knows this well. And we must finally act."

Japan, along with Western nations, has imposed sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Russia has unilaterally suspended peace treaty talks with Japan in response to the sanctions.

It is believed that Ukraine wants to coordinate with Japan to step up pressure on Russia. Its own territory has been unilaterally annexed by Russia, including Crimea in the country's south.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency will visit Russia early next week for discussions on ways to ensure the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's announcement on Friday comes after a series of recent scares at the facility, which is under the control of Russian troops.

He said shelling on Thursday has damaged a power line providing electricity to one of the plant's reactors, adding that the unit was forced to temporarily rely on emergency generators.

Grossi pointed out that the same unit also lost its external power supply in shelling on September 21, and temporarily ran on generators.

All of Zaporizhzhia's six reactors are currently in a state of cold shutdown.

Grossi said, "There is an urgent need to create a more stable environment for the plant and its staff."

Grossi says he will visit Russia for further consultations about an IAEA proposal to set up a protection zone around the facility.

Intelligence officials in Japan are increasing their surveillance activities ahead of a major event in North Korea.

The ruling Workers' Party marks its 77th anniversary on Monday. Concerns are rising that Pyongyang could be planning another provocation after a flurry of missile launches in recent days.

Officials in Japan are working with their counterparts in South Korea and the United States to keep close watch on activities in the North.

Pyongyang has previously resorted to provocations around the time of the party's anniversary. They include a ballistic missile launch in 2016, and North Korea's first nuclear test in 2006.

What's more, the regime recently expressed anger when the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier was redeployed to the Sea of Japan.

North Korea has criticized a UN aviation agency for adopting a resolution condemning the country's ballistic missile tests.

North Korea issued a statement through its aviation administration spokesperson on Saturday.

In it, the country justifies its missile launches as "regular and self-defense" actions. It claims they are "for defending the country's security and the regional peace from the US direct military threats that have lasted for more than half a century."

The International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, which sets rules for civilian aircraft, had condemned North Korea for posing a serious safety risk to international civil aviation.

North Korea accused the ICAO of not taking a fair stance. It said the agency is instead going along with "hostile forces" like the United States, which it claimed puts political pressure on member countries.

It went on to categorically condemn and reject the agency's position "as a political provocation of the US and its vassal forces aimed to infringe upon the sovereignty" of North Korea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the takeover of the Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project by a Russian operator.

Putin signed the decree on Friday creating a new entity to run the facility and giving the government greater control. He took similar steps earlier this year with the Sakhalin-2 project, also in the country's far east.

Stakes in Sakhalin-1 held by a consortium including Exxon Mobil will come under Russian government control temporarily. The 20 percent held by a Russian state-owned oil company remains in place under the order.

Non-Russian shareholders must submit notices to the government within one month stating whether they agree to retain their proportional stakes.

Russian media reported that the move follows Exxon Mobil's announcement in March that it will withdraw from the project in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The US-based firm was the operator of Sakhalin-1.

Japan has a 30 percent stake in the project through Sakhalin Oil and Gas Development Company. That holding is half owned by the Japanese government, and the rest by businesses including Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. and trading firms Itochu and Marubeni.

In August, the Russian government created a new firm to take over Sakhalin-2's operation, after British oil giant Shell announced its withdrawal.

Two Japanese trading firms, Mitsubishi Corporation and Mitsui & Co., have retained their Sakhalin-2 stakes in the project under the new Russian company.

People across the US are feeling the pinch of higher prices for food, housing and electricity. With a month to go until the midterm elections, Republican lawmakers are blaming the president for driving inflation to a 40-year high. However, Joe Biden says the latest jobs report is proof that the economy is seeing "historic progress."

Biden spoke on Friday to factory workers in Hagerstown, Maryland. He said the US needs to bring inflation down without giving up all historic economic progress that working class and middle-class people have made. He added that that's exactly what's been happening.

Biden has been busy visiting with union workers over the past months, stressing they are the "backbone of the economy."

The jobs report from the Department of Labor said the unemployment rate is at 3.5 percent -- the lowest level in 50 years. The economy added 263,000 new jobs, which was fewer than in previous months but in line with expectations. Business owners have slowed down hiring in response to the Federal Reserve raising interest rates, which makes it more difficult for companies to expand.

The low unemployment rate suggests, however, that fewer people are even looking for jobs. Biden said all these are "encouraging signs" that the US is transitioning to "stable, steady growth."

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has set out his vision for the company's Japan operations during talks with Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

The two met in Tokyo on Friday. In an announcement the same day, the US tech giant unveiled plans to invest 100 billion yen, or about 690 million dollars, in Japan by 2024.

The firm also said it will open its first Japan-based data center in the city of Inzai, Chiba Prefecture, next year.

Other plans include laying undersea cables that connect Japan with Canada, and investments in human resources.

After talking with Kishida, Pichai told reporters that he hopes Google will be a long-term partner for Japan.
