NHK has learned that a group of parliamentarians from Ukraine are set to visit Japan this weekend.

The visit will be the first since Russia's invasion of their country began in late February.

They are expected to call on Japan to put more pressure on Russia and seek assistance to help restore infrastructure.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Tokyo and other sources say five members of the parliament, including Galyna Mykhailiuk, are to arrive Japan on Saturday.

The group plans to meet their Japanese counterparts as well as government officials and members of economic circles.

The lawmakers include a former soldier who fought against pro-Russian armed groups in the past and an economic expert.

The visit comes with no signs of an end to the bloodshed in Ukraine evident. Russian forces pelted multiple Ukrainian cities with missiles on Wednesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been calling on the international community to step up sanctions and mount pressure on Russia.

The parliamentarians' visit to Japan is likely aimed at strongly urging the Group of Seven nations to remain united in supporting Ukraine.

A media report says more than 20 Russians have sailed to South Korea since last month. It says they may be trying to avoid being called up to fight in Ukraine.

The report from South Korea's public broadcaster KBS says two Russian men have been docked in this vessel since October 2. It says authorities have refused to grant them entry.

The crew told the reporter they were avoiding rough weather when they sailed into the southeastern port city of Pohang.

Two other yachts flying Russian flags are anchored at another port there. A total of 14 Russians are on board, mostly men in their 20s or 30s.

South Korean officials say a total of 21 Russians have sailed there since Moscow announced a partial mobilization. Only two have been allowed to enter.

The media report claims authorities are not able to determine whether they are fleeing military service. It says if they can clearly explain why they are visiting, they will be granted entry.

Japan's space agency says its latest rocket launch has failed. The mission was the first Epsilon rocket series to carry commercial satellites.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency says the rocket encountered an abnormality about six-and-a-half minutes after liftoff on Wednesday. It sent a command to the rocket to self-destruct.

The latest model, Epsilon-6, was supposed to have put into orbit eight satellites, two of them commercial.
JAXA developed the Epsilon series as a low-cost launch vehicle for small satellites. The agency successfully launched all five previous Epsilons, beginning with the first model in 2013.

A venture firm in Fukuoka City, iQPS Inc., developed the commercial satellites to capture high-definition images of Earth. Such images are useful for making assessments during disasters. Onishi Shunsuke, president of iQPS, said the failure will "serve as a valuable experience for us" and a motivation to make improvements.

JAXA had been hopeful that a successful launch would lead to new business opportunities. The agency's president, Yamakawa Hiroshi, said accurately identifying the cause of the problem and taking proper measures to respond to it will be important to restore trust in JAXA's rockets.

A court in military-ruled Myanmar has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to three more years in prison.

Sources say the ousted leader was sentenced in the capital Naypyitaw on Wednesday. The court ruled that she accepted bribes from a businessman in exchange for preferential treatment.

The trial was held behind closed doors.

This was the latest in a series of convictions against Aung San Suu Kyi since she was detained following a military coup last year.

She now faces a total of 26 years in prison.

Experts say the military may be extending her prison term to eliminate her political influence ahead of a general election due next year.

A Japanese journalist was also handed a prison term in Myanmar on Wednesday. A court sentenced Kubota Toru to three years. Security authorities detained him in Yangon in July.

They said Kubota entered the country on a tourist visa and filmed protests. The court ruled that he violated Myanmar's immigration law.

The latest verdict ends all of the court proceedings against Kubota. He has been given a 10-year jail term in total on three different charges.

The Japanese Embassy in Yangon says it will step up efforts to secure his release.

The Chinese Communist Party has concluded a key plenary session after issuing a communique with a slogan that expresses loyalty toward President Xi Jinping.

The 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party concluded the session in Beijing on Wednesday, ahead of the opening of the party's National Congress on Sunday.

Deliberating draft amendments to the Communist Party Constitution was high on the agenda. The amendments are aimed at further consolidating Xi's authority as he seeks an unprecedented third term as president.

The communique emphasizes the Communist Party has established Xi's core position in the Central Committee and defined the guiding role of Xi's thoughts on socialism for a new era.

It says this is "of decisive significance for advancing the cause of the party and the country in the new era and for driving forward the historic process of great national rejuvenation."

Wednesday's meeting also reflected on the past five years, with the communique saying the Central Committee has accomplished much, scoring major achievements that have captured the attention of the world.

Speculation is on the rise that Xi, now aged 69, will likely be granted a rare third term in the upcoming five-yearly National Congress, despite standing tradition that calls for party leaders to retire at 68.

North Korea says it successfully test-fired two long-range cruise missiles on Wednesday.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said on Thursday that the country's leader Kim Jong Un was present at the test-firing.

The missiles reportedly flew over the Yellow Sea for two hours, 50 minutes and 34 seconds along oval and figure-eight trajectories, and hit their targets 2,000 kilometers away.

An accompanying photo shows a missile similar to a long-range cruise missile that was launched in September last year and reportedly flew 1,500 kilometers.

The type of missile launched on Wednesday is said to have already been deployed to tactical nuclear operations units, which test-fired ballistic missiles seven times over a 15-day period through Sunday.

Kim described the booming sound the missiles made as a clear warning to his country's enemies.

He stressed that North Korea would focus all its efforts on the endless and accelerating development of its nuclear combat armed forces.

The world's first theme park based on movies made by Columbia Pictures has opened in Thailand, after the pandemic forced a year-long delay.

The first visitors streamed into "Columbia Pictures Aquaverse" on Wednesday. The park is near the popular resort city of Pattaya, southeast of Bangkok.

Eight zones are based on hit movies of the studio, owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, including "Ghostbusters" and "Jumanji."

One highlight is the "Mega Wave Pool," an outdoor cinema where movie viewers can stay cool.

People in the tourism industry hope Aquaverse will help rejuvenate the tourism industry while it recovers from the effects of the pandemic.

Jeffrey Godsick, Executive Vice President of Global Partnerships, Sony Pictures Entertainment, said, "As people start to travel a lot more, which is now happening, then you're going to see the tourist traffic starting to really grow. So we expect that we'll have both here for sure."

Thailand's tourism is beginning to show an uptick since the country fully reopened its borders to international visitors. Aquaverse is one of several theme parks that have opened this year. Another is scheduled to be launched before year-end.
