Japanese defense officials say the latest missile launched by North Korea may have been flown on a trajectory that maximizes travel distance.

The Defense Ministry analyzed the trajectory of the ballistic missile that passed over northern Japan on Tuesday.

Officials say it reached an altitude of about 1,000 kilometers and flew a distance of about 4,600 kilometers, a record distance for a North Korean missile. They noted that it had an intermediate or longer range.

The officials point out that if the missile had been intermediate range, it was likely flown on a minimum energy trajectory, which maximizes travel distance. They say this is because it reached the highest altitude after flying just over 2,000 kilometers.

The missile is believed to have fallen into the Pacific Ocean outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

The officials say the North is believed to seek development of a missile that has a range long enough to reach Guam, a strategic military hub of the United States. The ministry is continuing its analysis.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and US President Joe Biden have confirmed a need to strengthen the deterrence and response capabilities of their bilateral alliance.

The two leaders spoke by phone for about 25 minutes on Tuesday night, Japan time, after a North Korean ballistic missile flew over Japan for the first time in five years, on the morning of the same day.

Kishida and Biden condemned the launch. They shared the recognition that a series of the North's provocations including missile launches, are a clear and grave challenge to the peace and stability of Japan, the region and the international community.

Kishida conveyed his resolve to drastically strengthen Japan's defense capabilities. Kishida and Biden confirmed that the cooperation among Japan, the US and South Korea should be promoted.

They confirmed that the three countries should closely work together to fully denuclearize the North in line with UN security council resolutions.

They also discussed abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea. Biden told Kishida that the US will fully cooperate in resolving the issue.

After the talks, Kishida told reporters that Japan needs to continue to study options for its own sanctions against the North. He said he will send out strong messages, while making appeals at the UN and collaborating with relevant countries.

Asked if he plans to speak with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol by phone, Kishida said he will closely communicate with Yoon, as security is related to people's lives and livelihoods.

The South Korean and US militaries have fired ground-to-ground missiles toward the Sea of Japan in response to North Korea's launch on Tuesday of an intermediate-range ballistic missile.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff says the militaries each launched two Army Tactical Missile System missiles early on Wednesday.

It says the launches demonstrated the allies' capability and readiness to neutralize any provocative attempt by the North from anywhere.

The Joint Chiefs also confirmed that a Hyunmoo-2 ground-to-ground missile crashed within the base immediately after being launched by the South Korean military. It said there have been no reports of injury or damage to neighboring structures.

The country's Yonhap News Agency reported that the loud blast and the flash from the crash resulted in a flood of inquiries from nearby residents to local administrative offices. The confusion reportedly continued throughout the night, as the military made no announcements for hours.

Earlier this year, the South Korean and US militaries launched missiles in response to Pyongyang's test-firings. The launches in March and May were in response to the North's launches of what appeared to be intercontinental ballistic missiles. Another launch came in June after the North fired eight short-range ballistic missiles at one time.

The two militaries staged a bombing drill with fighter jets on Tuesday and released a video of the exercise.

Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa says the government ordered a Russian diplomat to leave the country by October 10 to protest the expulsion of a Japanese consul in Russia.

Hayashi told reporters that Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Mori Takeo on Tuesday summoned Russia's ambassador to Japan, Mikhail Galuzin. Mori declared the consul at the Russian Consulate General in Sapporo a persona non grata.

Last month, Russia's Federal Security Service detained a Japanese consul in Vladivostok for alleged espionage.
The Russian government declared the diplomat a persona non grata and ordered him to leave the country.

Hayashi told reporters that the detention of the consul is an obvious and serious violation of international laws. He called the Russian action unbelievable and absolutely unacceptable.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, and a way for gemstone polishers to make a good living. Around 90 percent of these precious stones are processed in India. But the country gets many of its raw diamonds from Russia, and economic sanctions have dented supply. Artisans in India are suffering as a result.
