A series of tornadoes tore through southern and Midwestern parts of the United States. Local media reports say at least 22 people are dead.

The storms occurred on Friday across wide areas, including Tennessee in the south and Illinois in the Midwest.

In Illinois, one person was killed after a roof collapsed at a crowded concert venue. More than 20 people were injured and treated at hospital.

Footage taken on Saturday in the Midwestern state of Indiana shows a number of flattened buildings littered with debris.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing. Local authorities say the death toll may rise.

The severe weather hit about a week after tornadoes killed more than 20 people in the southern state of Mississippi.

Russia has approved a new foreign policy concept aimed at creating an anti-Western coalition and strengthening ties with China and India.

The government of President Vladimir Putin released the new Russian Foreign Policy Concept on Friday. It is the first revision of the concept since 2016.

In the document, Russia accuses the United States and other Western nations of launching what it calls a "hybrid war" in response to measures that Russia has taken to protect its important national interests in Ukraine.

It emphasizes the facts that Russia is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and one of the two largest nuclear states in the world.

The new strategy is also aimed at strengthening cooperation with China and India, so that a multipolar international order can be built.

On Friday, the Institute for the Study of War, a US think tank, said it is likely that the aim of Russia's new foreign policy concept is to support the Kremlin's attempts to promote a potential anti-Western coalition.

The institute also said that Putin previously used meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping last month to "increase attempts to rhetorically rally the rest of the world against the West."

The think tank noted, however, that "Russia's declining economic power and degraded military effort in Ukraine continue to offer little incentive to countries to express serious interest in the proposal."

It said that Russia likely released the new foreign policy concept on the eve of assuming the presidency of the UN Security Council "in order to set informational conditions for future rhetorical efforts at the UN aimed at forming an anti-Western coalition."

Meanwhile, on Saturday at a meeting attended by senior officials, Russia's defense chief Sergei Shoigu promised that Moscow will expand production of ammunition and arms, including both conventional and precision-guided weapons.

Days earlier, Shoigu visited a weapons plant and instructed the country's ammunition industry to boost the production of weapons. The West has recently been providing Ukraine with more military assistance.

More residents of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine are evacuating their homes as fighting intensifies.

Footage released by local police on Saturday shows that Russian shelling damaged apartment buildings and shattered shop windows in the town of Avdiivka.

Many people are living in basements to protect themselves from sudden attacks.

A 73-old-woman decided to leave her hometown after spending about four months in the basement with her husband.

She said she couldn't take it anymore. She said her house was destroyed and she spent most of the time in the basement. She added that everyone is afraid.

The General Staff of the Ukrainian armed forces on Saturday named Avdiivka as one of the areas where the fiercest battles are taking place.

A bridge near Kyiv is being preserved as a memorial one year after it was destroyed by the Ukrainians to stop the Russian advance on the capital.

Local assembly member Taras Viazochenko is one of the people who called for the preservation of the destroyed bridge.

After the bridge was blown up, people had to wade in cold water or walk over precariously placed boards to cross the river.

Viazochenko says that at one point about 2,000 people huddled together under a constant fear of shelling waiting for their turn to cross the river.

In the ensuing days, he and others felt it was important to preserve the damaged bridge as a memorial to the horrifying experience. The local assembly agreed.

Viazochenko told NHK that most people want to preserve the bridge as a memorial. He said it is a symbol of the resistance which stopped Russian troops from taking Kyiv.

He said the bridge was sacrificed for the people's freedom, and called it "the road of life" because of the many lives that were saved by its destruction.

Key words : parliamentary election

As Finnish voters head to their polling stations, a close race is expected for three major parties, including the Social Democrats led by Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

Sunday's parliamentary election takes place as high inflation, partly due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is increasing strains on the country's economy and fiscal health.

The latest poll published on Thursday by public broadcaster Yle suggests that Marin's Social Democrats, the SDP, is trailing two major rivals with just 18.7 percent support.

Center-right National Coalition, the NCP, garnered 19.8 percent support, while the nationalist Finns Party had 19.5 percent.

The country's ascension to NATO in the coming weeks, has given a boost to the NCP, which has long advocated joining the military alliance.

The Finns party has maintained its support base with its Euro-sceptic policy, and calls for tight immigration controls.

Finland, which shares a border with Russia, had maintained military neutrality for decades, but sought to join the alliance in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
