Japan's first new central bank governor in 10 years headed to the office for the first time on Monday.
The 71-year-old economics professor Ueda Kazuo is succeeding Kuroda Haruhiko.
Ueda is a former Bank of Japan policy-board member and the first post-war governor to come from academia. The top BOJ official and deputy governors serve five-year terms.
Ueda has expressed in Diet testimony that he intends to continue the central bank's monetary easing policy. He said the steps are needed to support Japan's economy and will encourage wage hikes to achieve a price stability target of 2 percent inflation.
The central bank chief faces some daunting challenges.
There are concerns over how the nation will cope with a now-weakened bond market caused by the BOJ's ultra-loose monetary policy.
Investors are watching closely to see how he will handle side-effects of monetary easing. They are also looking for signs of when Ueda might revise those policies.

Taiwan says more than 30 Chinese military aircraft have entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone, or ADIZ. It says four of the Chinese planes were J-15 fighter jets from an aircraft carrier.
Taiwan's defense ministry says a total of 70 Chinese military aircraft were detected around Taiwan in the 24-hour period to 6 a.m. on Monday.
It says a total of 35 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or entered Taiwan's ADIZ.
The ministry says the four fighter jets approached Taiwan from the east and entered its southeast ADIZ before turning around and flying away.
The Chinese military has been conducting patrols and drills around Taiwan since Saturday.
The ministry has confirmed that the fleet of the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong has been training for the first time in the Western Pacific since last week. The carrier is believed to be taking part in the patrols and drills by China's military.
Taiwan's defense ministry speculates that if the Chinese military invades Taiwan, it may gather its fleets in the Western Pacific and surround Taiwan under the pretext of a drill.

Defense officials say no distress signal was received from a Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter that went missing while flying over waters off Miyako Island in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa on Thursday.
The chopper was carrying 10 people, including the head of the GSDF's 8th Division.
The helicopter's transponder emits information on the aircraft for air traffic controllers. If an emergency occurs, the pilot uses the device to issue a distress signal.
But defense ministry officials said on Sunday that aviation authorities did not detect a distress signal on Thursday.
The officials say a sudden problem could have prevented the pilot from operating the equipment.
The Self-Defense Forces and the Coast Guard continued the search for the missing helicopter and personnel on Sunday and found what appears to be part of a helicopter fuel tank.
A life raft and a door with Ground Self-Defense Force lettering were recovered earlier along with a rotor blade. But most of the fuselage, including the engines and cockpit, remains missing.
The SDF suspects that the fuselage might be on the seabed. A rescue ship equipped with sonar and an unmanned submersible vehicle is being used for the underwater search.

South Korea says North Korea may have deliberately cut off the liaison hotline between the two countries.
The two Koreas normally hold calls twice a day. But North Korea has not responded to routine inter-Korean calls via liaison and military hotlines since Friday.
South Korea's Unification Ministry said on Monday this is the first time since President Yoon Suk-yeol took office that North Korea has remained out of contact through multiple routes for more than a day. The ministry added that it will study what to do.
In 2021, North Korea unilaterally cut the communication channels for nearly two months to protest joint military drills between the United States and South Korea.

Voters across Japan have cast their ballots in the first round of unified local elections. A regional party based in the western prefecture of Osaka and its affiliated national party have expanded their showing.
The elections took place on Sunday for governors of nine prefectures and mayors of six major cities, as well as the local assemblies of 41 prefectures and 17 major cities.
The incumbent, Governor of Osaka Prefecture Yoshimura Hirofumi won his second term. He is the leader of the regional political party Osaka Ishin no Kai and the co-head of the Nippon Ishin Japan Innovation Party, the second-largest opposition force in the National Diet.
Osaka Ishin no Kai also won in the mayoral race of Osaka City. It also secured a majority in both the Osaka prefectural and city assemblies for the first time ever.
Yamashita Makoto, endorsed by the Japan Innovation Party, took the governorship of Nara Prefecture. He is the first Ishin candidate to win a governorship outside Osaka.
The incumbent, Governor of Hokkaido Suzuki Naomichi won his second term.
Suzuki was supported by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, both in the ruling coalition at the national level. He beat a candidate who was supported by the Constitutional Democratic Party, the largest opposition force in the Diet.
Another round of unified local elections will be held on April 23.

Researchers in Japan say they have transplanted eye cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells into a patient suffering from bullous keratopathy. They say it is the world's first surgery of its kind.
The group is led by Fujita Health University Professor Shimmura Shigeto and includes researchers from Keio University.
In October, they injected a solution containing about 800,000 iPS-derived cells into the cornea of a patient in his 70s.
They performed the transplant at Keio University Hospital in Tokyo.
Bullous keratopathy is a serious eye disease in which the cornea becomes clouded and the vision reduces. Currently, a cornea transplant is the only basic remedy for the disease.
The group says there have been no complications so far, and the man's eyesight shows signs of improvement.
It says about 10,000 patients are waiting for a transplant, but only 2,000 procedures are performed each year.
Shimmura says the group finally carried out their work after 10 years of research.
Induced pluripotent stem cells can develop into various kinds of body tissue.

The daughter of the late Japanese musician and composer Sakamoto Ryuichi has written about her feelings for her father, saying she will always love him.
Sakamoto died last month at the age of 71. Sakamoto Miu posted on social media that she was close to her father but she also felt a sense of distance because she saw he was loved by many people.
The singer wrote that she wore her favorite dress to look pretty when she was going to see him, and she also did that in his final days.
She said he was the coolest father in the world and she admired him. She said she had received thoughtful messages, photos and memories from around the world, and is happy to know he had a good time with so many people in so many places.
She concluded her message by saying she will love her father forever.
