China says it has begun three days of military exercises around Taiwan.
The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command announced on Saturday that it had started combat readiness patrols and drills. It said they will be held in waters and airspace around the Taiwan Strait and to the north, south and east of Taiwan as planned.
The command said the exercise is a serious warning against what it calls "Taiwan independence" separatist forces' collusion with external forces and provocations.
The scale of the drills and other details have not been disclosed.
The move is seen as a response to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's meeting this week with US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Following the meeting, China's Ministry of National Defense said the People's Liberation Army will always be on high alert.
It said, "The PLA will resolutely safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."
Last year, China conducted large-scale military drills around Taiwan in reaction to a visit to Taiwan by then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

North Korea says it carried out another test of an underwater, nuclear-capable attack drone this week.
The Saturday edition of the ruling Workers' Party newspaper said a national defense science research institute conducted the test over four days through Friday.
The report said the "Haeil-2" submersible drone entered the test area on Tuesday off the eastern province of South Hamgyong.
It said the drone spent about 71 hours cruising a virtual distance of 1,000 kilometers before reaching a simulated target and accurately detonating a test warhead.
This is the second time North Korea has announced a test of its new weapon, called Haeil, which means "tsunami" in Korean. The country said it first tested the Haeil last month, and claimed it can trigger "radioactive tsunami" capable of destroying enemy ships and seaports.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency says Haeil-2 may be an improved version of the one tested in March because it traveled a longer distance.
The latest test comes as Japan, the US and South Korea carried out joint drills in the East China Sea through Tuesday, involving a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

A search is underway for a missing Japan Ground Self-Defense Force helicopter off the southern prefecture of Okinawa. The chopper was carrying 10 people, including the head of the GSDF's 8th Division.
Self-Defense Force and Coast Guard personnel are using sonar in their continued search near Miyako Island where the helicopter dropped off the radar on Thursday.
They have so far discovered a life raft that belonged to the helicopter, along with a door and a rotor blade. But the fuselage remains missing.
The SDF has dispatched a minesweeper vessel to the scene to search the seabed using sonar.
It has been confirmed that the helicopter was communicating with air traffic controllers on the nearby island of Shimoji two minutes before it disappeared.
Officials with the Defense and transportation ministries say the helicopter crew reported no abnormalities at that time.
The GSDF suspects that a problem arose after the helicopter's last communication with the air traffic controllers, and is continuing its investigation.

A car rammed into pedestrians in Tel Aviv on Friday night, killing a foreign tourist and injuring five on a seaside promenade in Israel's commercial hub. Israeli police are investigating it as a terrorist attack.
Police say the person killed was an Italian man. The driver was identified as an Arab citizen of an Israeli village. Police shot him dead at the scene.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas praised it as retaliation for Israeli raids on the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.
The incident came hours after a shooting attack on an Israeli family in the occupied West Bank left two people dead.
Tensions have been mounting between Israelis and Palestinians since April, when Israeli security forces raided the Al-Aqsa mosque, triggering Palestinian protests.
Early on Friday, Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon in response to a rocket attack.

Ukrainian forces say they are holding on to their key eastern stronghold of Bakhmut against the ongoing Russian offensive. Fighting there is expected to intensify.
The British defense ministry said on Friday that Russian forces have regained some momentum in the battle for Bakhmut. It said Russia has now likely advanced into the town center, and that a key Ukrainian supply route to the west of the town is being severely threatened.
A spokesperson for Ukraine's Eastern Military Command told Reuters the situation is difficult, but that the enemy is suffering serious losses and not reaching a strategic success.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is thought to have suggested a possible withdrawal from Bakhmut.
He said in a news conference on Wednesday, "If there is a danger that we may lose personnel due to the encirclement, there will certainly be corresponding correct decisions of the general on the ground."
On the other hand, Ukraine's military intelligence service said on social media on Thursday that it is "preparing a lot of interesting things," apparently suggesting a major counteroffensive.

Russian state media say jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has been charged with espionage.
On Friday, the Tass and Interfax news agencies quoted a law enforcement official as saying the Federal Security Service had formally charged the American journalist.
Security officials detained Gershkovich on March 30 for allegedly collecting information about a "state secret" linked to the military.
Tass says he categorically denies all accusations.
The Kremlin on Thursday said that Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov has discussed the case with US Ambassador Lynne Tracy.
Russia's foreign ministry says Ryabkov stressed that Gershkovich had been caught red handed, and that his release is unlikely.
On March 31, US President Joe Biden called on Moscow to free the reporter.
And in phone talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the detention "unacceptable".

Officials at the Pentagon have been busy, for more than a year, analyzing the war in Ukraine. They have made assessments about the readiness of troops on both sides, and they have come up with classified plans to help the Ukrainian military. But now they are scrambling to find out how some of those documents were leaked online.
The files appeared on the social media sites Twitter and Telegram. Reporters at The New York Times broke the story on Thursday, citing senior White House officials.
The documents do not provide specifics about the offensive that Ukrainian leaders have hinted is coming in the next few weeks. However, they do include American and Ukrainian views, as of March 1, of what soldiers might need for the campaign.
They mention that troops have been quickly using up HIMARS rocket systems supplied by the US. And they contain information about Ukrainian brigades receiving training by NATO allies, and how much, and by when, other equipment would be needed.
However, some analysts are casting doubt on the authenticity of the documents. They say the Russians may be behind the leak, in an effort to spread disinformation. They point out that the figures for the number of Russian casualties are much lower than Pentagon estimates.
An aide to the Ukrainian president went even further. Mykhailo Podolyak wrote that the leak contains "a large amount of fictitious information."
Pentagon officials have not commented on the authenticity of the documents or who they think is behind the leak.

Researchers in Japan say they have transplanted eye cells derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. They say it is the world's first surgery of its kind.
The group is led by Fujita Health University Professor Shimmura Shigeto and includes researchers from Keio University.
In October, they injected a solution containing about 800,000 iPS-derived cells into the cornea of a patient in his 70s.
They performed the transplant at Keio University Hospital in Tokyo.
The man had a serious eye disease in which the cornea becomes clouded and the vision reduces.
The group says there have been no complications so far, and the man's eyesight shows signs of improvement.
Currently, transplantation of the cornea is the only basic remedy for the disease.
The group says about 10,000 patients are waiting for a transplant, but only 2,000 procedures are performed each year.
Shimmura says the group finally carried out their work after 10 years of research.
Induced pluripotent stem cells can develop into various kinds of body tissue.
