Tokyo police have arrested 19 Japanese nationals on suspicion of running phone scams from Cambodia targeting people in their home country.
Police made the arrests aboard a chartered plane that was transporting the suspects from Cambodia. The aircraft arrived at Tokyo's Haneda Airport on Tuesday night.
Sources close to the investigation say the suspects range in age from 25 to 55.
The sources say the group allegedly swindled about 250,000 yen, or about 1,900 dollars, in electronic money from a Tokyo resident in her 60s in January.
The alleged scammers are suspected to have sent a fake text message warning the woman she was behind on a payment for an online service.
The group is believed to have operated from a hotel room in the southern Cambodian city of Sihanoukville.

Yellow sand swept across Beijing and other parts of China, sending air pollution surging to hazardous levels on Monday and Tuesday.
Chinese weather officials said strong winds carried yellow sand from inland regions and neighboring Mongolia to northern China and other parts of the country.
The air quality in Beijing at one point reached the worst level on the country's six-tier scale for the second day on Tuesday, as yellow dust blanketed the capital.
People were seen wearing masks, and cars were covered with dust.
A woman in her 40s said she has been unable to open the window or go out. She added that the yellow dust has become worse than before.
A man in his 30s said driving has been difficult, and the situation is serious.
State-run Xinhua News Agency cited an expert as saying sandstorms have been increasing recently due to little rainfall in China's northern regions and Mongolia, and seasonal strong winds.
The weather officials said yellow sand will likely be observed in northern and eastern regions on Wednesday as well. They called on people to cover their mouths and noses with masks or scarves when going outside and to drive carefully as visibility is expected to be poor.

Japan's weather officials expect yellow sand to reach the country on Wednesday.
Yellow sand originates in China's desert regions after massive amounts of sand are blown up by strong winds.
Sandstorms are often observed in Japan in spring.
The weather officials say yellow sand covered China's northeastern region and the Korean Peninsula on late afternoon Tuesday.
The officials expect the yellow sand to reach the Sea of Japan side of the country on Wednesday morning.
They also say the yellow sand will spread to wide areas including Japan's Pacific side from Wednesday night through Thursday morning, and move to seas east of the country on Friday.
The yellow sand could cause poor visibility and affect flights.
