Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force has announced that it held a two-day joint exercise with the US and South Korean navies in the East China Sea.
The MSDF says eight vessels took part in the exercise held Monday and Tuesday, including the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and Japanese and South Korean destroyers.
The vessels reportedly practiced anti-submarine tactics and other maneuvers.
The MSDF released photos of the three countries' ships navigating in formation around the Nimitz.
It was the first trilateral maritime exercise involving a US carrier since September.
The MSDF says the purpose of the exercise was to strengthen the deterrence of the Japan-US alliance and to promote security cooperation among Japan, the US and South Korea.
Observers say it aimed to showcase the three-way partnership as North Korea repeatedly launches ballistic missiles and China steps up activity in regional waters.

Japanese government sources say an official of the country's embassy in Beijing has met an expatriate detained in the Chinese capital on suspicion of espionage.
The sources say the meeting lasted for about 30 minutes, and the detained man was in good physical condition.
But it remains unknown why the employee of a major Japanese pharmaceutical firm was taken into custody by Chinese authorities last month.
The meeting came after Japan's Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa visited China and held talks with his counterpart Qin Gang on Sunday.
Hayashi also met China's top diplomat Wang Yi and Premier Li Qiang.
Hayashi protested against the detention and demanded his early release.
The government says it will ask for more meetings with the man and continue to request that China free him as soon as possible.
