Concerns over a possible ground operation are mounting after a 24-hour evacuation period that Israel had issued to the residents of the Gaza Strip has ended.

The fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas entered its eighth day on Saturday. It has left more than 3,200 people dead, including 1,900 in Gaza and at least 1,300 on the Israeli side.

The Israeli military on Thursday notified the United Nations that residents of the northern Gaza Strip should evacuate to the region's southern area within 24 hours, or by the end of Friday, local time.

But footage has shown continuing attacks in the area with frequent sounds of explosions presumably due to Israeli airstrikes, which occasionally cause blazes.

Hamas has been responding to Israel's evacuation notice with violence. It declared on Friday that it had launched rocket attacks on an Israeli air base and its largest commercial city of Tel Aviv.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said this is just the beginning and the country's forces will destroy Hamas. Israel is seen to be preparing for a large-scale military operation including a ground offensive.

About 1.1 million residents of Gaza have been told to evacuate. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres posted a comment on social media on Friday. He said, "Moving more than one million people across a densely populated warzone to a place with no food, water, or accommodation, when the entire territory of Gaza is under siege, is extremely dangerous -- and in some cases, simply not possible."

Japan is considering deploying Self-Defense Force aircraft, in addition to a chartered plane, to facilitate the evacuation of Japanese nationals from Israel.

The government is making arrangements for the chartered flight amid the intensifying conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The plane is scheduled to leave the Israeli city of Tel Aviv on Saturday and head to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The government is also considering sending SDF aircraft to the northeastern African country of Djibouti as a backup measure in case the operation of the chartered flight encounters any obstacles.

If the arrangement proceeds without any problem, the Foreign Ministry will make a formal request to the Defense Ministry to prepare for deployment.

Government officials say they have so far received no reports of fatalities or physical harm to Japanese citizens.

The government hopes to continue its efforts to ensure their safety through cooperation with relevant countries and organizations.

Japan's Air Self-Defense Force airplanes have left the country for a mission to back up evacuations of Japanese citizens from Israel.

The aircraft are heading to the northeastern African country of Djibouti. They will be on standby to act in case the operation of a separately chartered flight encounters obstacles. The chartered plane is scheduled to leave Tel Aviv on Saturday, local time.

On Saturday morning, a KC-767 aerial refueling and transport plane took off from the Komaki Air Base in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan. Personnel for the mission are on board.

Separately, two C-2 transport planes left the Miho Air Base in Tottori Prefecture, western Japan, also on Saturday morning.

The SDF has mobilized about 420 members for the mission.

A South Korean military aircraft has left Israel to bring the country's citizens and foreign nationals home amid the escalating fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

South Korea's foreign ministry says the transport plane departed from an airport in Tel Aviv on Saturday, carrying 163 South Koreans, 51 Japanese and six Singaporeans.

It says the plane is expected to land at an airport near Seoul as early as Saturday night.

The Japanese Embassy in Israel sent emails through Friday to Japanese nationals in Israel about South Korea's offer to transport them if there were vacancies.

South Korean government sources say the proposal was made from Seoul's humanitarian viewpoint.

Speculation is rising that the decision-making committee of China's legislature may soon decide to oust Defense Minister Li Shangfu, whose whereabouts have been unknown for more than six weeks.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency said on Friday that the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress will meet from October 20 to 24 to review bills. It said documents to be submitted also include "personnel appointments and removals."

Defense Minister Li was last seen in public delivering a speech on August 29. Media outlets in the West and Hong Kong have reported that Li could be under investigation for alleged corruption.

Reuters news agency has cited informed sources as saying that Li could be replaced by General Liu Zhenli. He is a member of the Central Military Commission and the chief of the Joint Staff Department.

When the Standing Committee met in July, delegates dismissed Qin Gang as foreign minister just over six months after he was appointed. Prior to the move, Qin's whereabouts remained unknown for a month.

A senior US government official says the country has information that North Korea has delivered military supplies, including ammunition, to Russia.

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Friday that the information indicates that more than 1,000 containers of military supplies had been transported to Russia.

He showed satellite imagery of containers and cargo vessels, saying that the deliveries took place between September 7 and October 1.

Kirby said some containers were loaded onto a Russian-flagged ship at a port in northeastern North Korea.

The containers were unloaded at a port in Russia's Far East. They were then transported by rail to a depot near a town in the Krasnodar region about 290 kilometers from Russia's border with Ukraine.

Kirby said the US assesses that "Pyongyang is seeking military assistance from Russia, including fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missiles, armored vehicles, ballistic missile production equipment, or other materials and other advanced technologies." He added that the US has already observed Russian ships offloading containers in North Korea.

Kirby expressed serious concern about the escalating military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

He stressed that sanctions will be tightened on entities involved in the deals. He added that the issue will be raised in the UN Security Council as such deals are in violation of the council's resolutions.

Finance chiefs from the Group of 20 economies have managed to put together a communique, even though they remain split over key global issues.

Finance ministers and central bank governors wrapped up two days of talks in Marrakech, Morocco, on Friday.

They had been unable to produce a final document in six past meetings, due to divisions over the invasion of Ukraine. Russia is a G20 member.

The latest communique says "all states must refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition," without naming Russia. The ministers managed to get around their disagreements by echoing the language agreed upon at the G20 summit last month.

On the global economy, the communique says it has shown "resilience to recent shocks," but adds that "risks remain."

However, the document does not mention the latest flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.

Progress also remained elusive over how to settle the massive debts owed by developing and emerging economies.

Ahead of the G20 meetings, Japan and others led talks to support Sri Lanka, which has effectively defaulted on its foreign debt. But the participants failed to meet their goal of reaching a broad agreement.

The G20 communique calls for a "swift conclusion as soon as possible" with regards to the talks to resolve Sri Lanka's debt problem.

Japanese Finance Minister Suzuki Shunichi told reporters after the meeting that the debt issue cannot be put off. He said Japan will continue to actively lead discussions to tackle the problem.

Japanese flash memory chip maker Kioxia Holdings and its US partner Western Digital are close to finalizing a merger.

When realized, the merger will create a chip producer comparable to the world flash memory leader, Samsung Electronics of South Korea.

Kioxia was the world's third-largest flash memory maker in 2022, while Western Digital ranked 4th.

Sources close to the merger talks say the two firms are aiming to set up a holding company. They are said to be on track to conclude the talks by the end of October.

Western Digital is expected to provide more than 50 percent of the capital for the new firm, while a majority of the board members, including the president, will be from Kioxia.

Japanese banks are said to be lending the new company around 13 billion dollars.

But whether South Korean chip maker SK hynix, which is a shareholder in Kioxia, will agree to the merger is uncertain.

Kioxia and Western Digital have already made joint investments in plants in Japan's Mie and Iwate prefectures.

Demand for flash memory is expected to grow for use in data centers and other purposes. But businesses are burdened with the large investments they must make in facilities to stay in competition.

The merger could help make investing more efficient.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has attended a ceremony to honor a Japanese woman who raised more than 3,000 orphans before and after World War Two.

Tauchi Chizuko is known as the "mother of orphans" in South Korea. Born in Japan's Kochi Prefecture in 1912, she moved to the southwestern city of Mokpo at the age of 7, when the Korean Peninsula was under Japan's colonial rule.

Tauchi married a Korean evangelist who ran an orphanage in the city. Even after her husband went missing during the Korean War, she continued to raise orphans until her death in 1968 at the age of 56.

A ceremony to mark the 95th year since the founding of the orphanage was held in Mokpo on Friday. President Yoon and his wife were among the about 600 participants.

Yoon expressed hope that the facility will be at the forefront of supporting children in South Korea and further develop as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries.

A member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party read out a speech on behalf of Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. Kishida reflected on the ideals of the orphanage, whose name includes the word "coexistence." He pledged to work hard so that Japan and South Korea can embark on a new era as partners.
