North Korea has reacted sharply to the United States' condemnation of its enhanced relations with Russia.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency reported on a statement from vice foreign minister Im Chon Il on Sunday in which relations with Russia were defined as a "strategic stronghold."
The vice minister said in the statement that the US groundlessly termed the development of the good neighborly relations a "violation of international law."
He added that the US tries to give the world the false impression that the cooperation poses a "threat" to global peace.
The vice minister noted that the relations of the two countries are developing onto a new, high stage.
He called them a "powerful fortress and strategic stronghold" for preserving peace.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit meeting in September. And October 12 marks the 75th anniversary of founding of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.
North Korea is stressing its good relations with friendly nations.
Kim sent a congratulatory telegram to President Xi Jinping of China, another friendly nation, as Chinese people celebrate their National Day on Sunday.
Kim wrote that relations between North Korea and China have entered a new historic period.

Bangladesh has been experiencing its worst-ever outbreak of dengue fever, with the death toll from the infectious disease topping 900.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that causes high fever and severe headaches, as well as pain in the joints and muscles.
The latest statistics released by the World Health Organization on September 24 put the total number of deaths in Bangladesh at a record 909. WHO officials say the disease is rampant across the country.
The South Asian country's health authorities noted the outbreak started around May, which was earlier than usual.
They said more than 133,000 people had been infected as of September 4. That's a roughly 20-fold increase from the same period last year.
Footage in the capital, Dhaka, shows many children being treated at a hospital with their mothers at their bedsides.
WHO experts warned that climate change is contributing to the spread of dengue and other diseases caused by mosquito-borne viruses.
They described such infectious diseases as a "canary in the coal mine of the climate crisis."

A pro-China candidate has won the presidential election in the Maldives, the island nation in the Indian Ocean.
The election commission said that opposition candidate Mohamed Muizzu got about 54 percent of the votes, beating incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the run-off vote on Saturday.
Solih was seeking to be re-elected to serve a second term.
Muizzu, the mayor of the capital Male, ran the race backed by a coalition of opposition parties.
Conceding the election, Solih congratulated Muizzu on social media.
The island nation is strategically located in the Indian Ocean.
The election was widely seen as an indicator of which of two countries was more favored, nearby India or China, with its Belt and Road Initiative.
Solih has emphasized relations with India, saying it benefits the defense and security of the Maldives.
Muizzu favors China, saying that excessive military cooperation with India could erode the country's sovereignty.
He served as housing minister under former President Abdulla Yameen, who promoted pro-China diplomacy.
Muizzu was involved in large-scale infrastructure projects supported by China during his tenure in the cabinet.
His victory could help China increase its influence as it steps up activities in regional waters.

The Bank of Japan's latest "Tankan" survey shows that business sentiment among the country's major manufacturers has improved for the second straight quarter.
The BOJ polled over 9,000 companies between late August and the end of September.
The closely-watched index gauging the mood among large manufacturers stands at plus 9, up 4 points from the previous survey in June.
A positive number indicates that more companies are optimistic about business conditions than those taking a negative view.
A recovery in auto production after shortages of semiconductors and other parts eased was the main factor behind the improvement.
Large non-manufacturers continue to be even more upbeat. The index tracking their sentiment rose 4 points to 27 in the sixth straight quarter of improvement.
An increase in foreign tourists and a recovery in the hotels and restaurant sectors were the major drivers.

China and Germany have agreed to strengthen economic cooperation in a high-level financial dialogue held Sunday in Frankfurt.
The talk was co-chaired by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Germany's Finance Minister Christian Lindner.
China's state-run Xinhua News Agency quoted He as saying that China is ready to work with Germany to deepen mutually beneficial, and win-win cooperation, to inject more positive energy into the two countries' partnership.
Lindner showed Germany's willingness to increase talks with China in the framework of the high-level financial dialogue.
A joint statement published by China says both countries are committed to enhancing strong and sustainable growth of the global economy.
China faces a slow economic recovery as the country's real estate slump is dragging on. Beijing apparently aims to attract investment and bolster its economy through strengthened cooperation with Berlin.
In July, the German government published its strategy on China, signaling a shift from its reliance on China in critical minerals and others.
Berlin apparently seeks to maintain necessary economic ties with China.

People in Indonesia visited a soccer stadium in East Java on Sunday in remembrance of the victims of a deadly stampede there exactly a year ago.
The incident occurred after a professional match in Malang City. Police fired tear gas after fans of the defeated home team stormed the pitch, causing panicked spectators to rush toward the exits. One hundred thirty-five people died.
On Sunday, some people were crying in front of the exits while viewing photos of the victims.
A man who was involved in the panicked rush said he has come to the site for the first time since the incident, and that this required courage.
A government fact-finding team concluded that the firing of tear gas was the main cause of the stampede resulting in the high number of deaths. Police officers and officials of the home team were given prison sentences for their roles in the incident.
Indonesia will host the FIFA Under-17 Men's World Cup that starts in November. Many people are voicing the need to ensure the safe management of big events.

Visitors to the western Japan island of Miyajima, home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Itsukushima Shrine, must pay a tax to the city of Hatsukaichi, starting Sunday.
A ferry ticket to the island in Hiroshima Prefecture now includes a tax of 100 yen or about 67 cents.
Miyajima residents and people who work or study there are not charged the tax.
City officials say the new fee will help them keep Miyajima a sustainable tourist destination.
They expect the fee to generate 104 million yen or about 700,000 dollars in tax revenues by the end of the current fiscal year next March.
The officials say the money will be spent on maintaining toilets and ferry terminals as well as moving power cables underground.
They say about 2.93 million people visited Miyajima from January through August this year. The figure is about 90 percent of the level before the coronavirus pandemic.
An official says the city recognizes the significance of collecting the tax from visitors and will utilize the revenue to protect Miyajima together with them.
