The escalating violence between the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel's military is sparking concern in Asia.

The Thai Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it has confirmed the death of two of its nationals in Israel. But it said reports suggest a total of 18 Thais have been killed.

It added that 9 others were reportedly injured and 11 taken hostage in Gaza.

Thailand is a major source of foreign workers in Israel with about 30,000 employed in agriculture and other industries.

The Thai Air Force is now on standby to help evacuate the more than 3,000 Thai nationals reportedly waiting to leave Israel.

In Indonesia, some 100 members of a local political party took to the streets in Jakarta on Tuesday. They called on both sides to stop the violence.

They also urged the government and President Joko Widodo to play an active role in ending the conflict.

A participant said that many Indonesians are showing solidarity with the Palestinians, as a majority of the population is Muslim.

About 80 percent of Indonesia's population is Muslim, and the government has sympathized with the Palestinian cause.

It says the root of the conflict is the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel, which must be resolved according to parameters agreed upon by the UN.

An artillery strike hit a displaced persons camp in Myanmar, killing at least 29 people including 11 children. Fifty-seven people were reportedly injured. The United Nations condemned the attack that targeted civilians.

Forces of the region's ethnic minority told NHK that the shelling took place late Monday night in the northern state of Kachin.

A Myanmar military spokesperson denied its involvement in Monday's deadly shelling.

A woman who is involved in humanitarian work near the site told NHK that they are struggling with various shortages, such as medicine and food. She also said hospital beds are extremely limited.

The UN in Myanmar says it is deeply concerned about the reports of civilian deaths, as "camps are places of refuge, and civilians, no matter where they are, should never be a target."

Myanmar's military has continued its indiscriminate air strikes on citizens.
According to a local human rights group more than 4,000 civilians have been killed since the coup two years ago.

A Japanese think tank says that the initial Chinese reaction to Japan's release of treated and diluted water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant may have worsened the Japanese people's impression of China.

The Genron NPO and China International Communications Group conducted the annual joint survey from August through September this year. A total of 2,506 people responded.

In Japan, 68.4 percent of the respondents said bilateral relations are "bad" or "somewhat bad." That's a jump of 12.2 percentage points from last year.

The respondents in China who held a similar view stood at 41.2 percent, up 3.5 points. But 29.7 percent described bilateral relations as "good" or "somewhat good," up 12.2 points.

Asked about their impression of the other country, 62.9 percent of the respondents in China said "poor" or "rather poor."

The percentage in China was about the same as last year, whereas in Japan 92.2 percent gave those answers -- up 4.9 points.

The Genron NPO notes that the poll coincided with China's suspension of Japanese seafood imports following Japan's release into the sea of treated water from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant.
