Authorities in Nepal have told NHK that at least 60 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a strong earthquake in the northwestern part of the country.

The United States Geological Survey says the quake had an estimated magnitude of 5.6 and struck around 11:47 p.m. on Friday local time at a depth of about 18 kilometers.

Nepalese authorities estimate the quake had a magnitude of 6.4. They say its epicenter was in Jajarkot, a district about 300 kilometers northwest of the capital, Kathmandu.

There are reports that landslides are hindering rescue operations in the hardest-hit area. Details of the damage are still unknown.

Palestinian officials say Israeli missiles have struck two ambulances, leaving 15 people dead and more than 60 wounded.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society and other sources said on Friday that two ambulances were attacked near the al-Shifa Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in the Gaza Strip.

A convoy of five ambulances reportedly left the hospital at a little past 4 p.m. on Friday and headed for the Rafah crossing with Egypt to evacuate patients.

However, a large amount of debris and rocks in the road forced the convoy to turn back about 4 kilometers from the hospital. The lead vehicle came under attack on the way back.

Sources say the remaining four vehicles continued on, but one was struck at the gates of the hospital.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it had identified and hit an ambulance "being used by a Hamas terrorist cell." It claimed that intelligence indicates that Hamas is transferring militants and weapons in ambulances.

A Hamas official called allegations that its fighters were present "baseless."

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a social media post that he was "utterly shocked by reports of attacks on ambulances evacuating patients." He stressed that patients, medical staff, facilities and ambulances must be protected at all times.

Health authorities in Gaza say that the hostilities that started on October 7 have left 9,257 people dead in Gaza, of whom 3,826 were children. At least 1,400 have been killed in Israel. The combined death toll has topped 10,600, with heavy civilian casualties.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has told Israeli leaders that he is concerned about civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip. He urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday to protect Palestinians and to suspend attacks in a "humanitarian pause."

Blinken is on his third visit to Israel since Hamas militants sparked the fighting with a surprise attack last month.

After meeting with Netanyahu, he said, "We've been clear that as Israel conducts its campaign to defeat Hamas, how it does so matters. It matters because it's the right and lawful thing to do."

But Blinken is not seeing the "pause" he had hoped for. Israeli forces continued their attacks on the Gaza Strip from the ground, sea and air. They are also destroying tunnels used by Hamas fighters.

Netanyahu said, "I made it clear we will continue with all our power, and that Israel refuses a temporary ceasefire that doesn't include a return of our hostages."

Hamas militants took hundreds of captives in their attack on October 7. Family members of the kidnapped have taken to the streets to plead for their safe return.

One protester in Tel Aviv said, "We want to give everything that they asked for -- even a ceasefire -- as long as they come back home safely."

Blinken later traveled to Jordan to talk with other partners and to prevent the conflict from spreading throughout the region.

However, Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, cast doubt on those efforts. He said in a televised address on Friday that a wider conflict is a "realistic possibility" and that, in battles with Israel, "all options are on the table."

Japan's Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko has pledged about 65 million dollars in additional humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip during a visit to the West Bank city of Ramallah.

Kamikawa met Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki on Friday for about 50 minutes.

The meeting came after she held talks with her Israeli counterpart in Tel Aviv.

Japan has already pledged 10 million dollars in emergency humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza.

Kamikawa told Maliki that she is paying close attention to the situation. She also expressed her condolences to the families of those who have been killed in the violence.

Kamikawa said Japan condemns terrorist attacks by Hamas and others, and calls for the immediate release of hostages and a de-escalation of the situation as soon as possible.

She told Maliki that the priority should be delivering necessary assistance to people in Gaza.

Kamikawa said Japan will provide relief supplies through the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Maliki expressed gratitude for Japan's support, and said violence is also increasing in the West Bank.

Kamikawa told Maliki that Japan continues to support a two-state solution, whereby Israel and a future independent Palestinian state live side by side.

The ministers confirmed they will work together to that end.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has called on the Philippines to bolster its ties with Japan toward the goal of maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of law amid China's intensifying maritime activities.

Kishida addressed a joint session of the Philippines' Congress on Saturday, becoming the first Japanese prime minister to do so. He was on an official visit to the Southeast Asian country from Friday.

Kishida said the international community is at a historical turning point, where the rules-based international order is under serious threat.

He urged the lawmakers to share a commitment to advance efforts to lead the world toward cooperation rather than division and confrontation so as to staunchly defend freedoms and the rule of law.

He told the Congress that Japan and the Philippines have agreed on Tokyo's provision of costal surveillance radars under its Official Security Assistance framework.

He said Japan intends to deepen bilateral security cooperation and also bolster trilateral collaboration involving the United States.

Kishida pledged to present a common vision to create a sustainable and prosperous future at a special summit of Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, to be held in Tokyo next month.

He said he will also host a summit meeting of the "Asia Zero Emission Community" in order to achieve de-carbonization of Asia.

A court in Hong Kong has sentenced a 23-year-old woman to two months in jail for sedition. The charges relate to social media posts she made while studying in Japan.

The student was accused of making pro-independence comments on Facebook and elsewhere starting in 2018.

She returned to Hong Kong in March, and was arrested on suspicion of violating the territory's national security law. The charges later came under the sedition law.

A court said on Friday that the woman had attempted to incite distrust of the central government through 13 online messages, of which 11 were made in Japan.

Chinese authorities are tightening controls on free speech under the leadership of President Xi Jinping.

The court's decision adds to fears about people being punished in Hong Kong for their actions overseas.

Taiwan's Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu is to visit the Baltic state of Estonia next week to attend a foreign policy seminar.

The seminar, scheduled for Wednesday in Tallinn, was organized by the International Centre for Defence and Security, an Estonian think tank.

Wu is to deliver a keynote speech and take part in a discussion titled "Europe and Taiwan at the times of increasing global tensions."

The Estonian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it "is ready to accept the establishment of a non-diplomatic economic or cultural representation of Taipei." It added that enhancing such relations with Taiwan is not in conflict with the one-China policy.

Last year, Estonia withdrew from the Beijing-led economic cooperation format between Central and Eastern European countries and China.

Some European countries are strengthening their ties with Taiwan, which is increasing its presence in the semiconductor and other sectors, while distancing themselves from China. They cite humanitarian issues in China and Beijing's relations with Russia, among other reasons.

People in the city of Nagaoka in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan, held the final day of a traditional bullfight this year on Friday.

The district of Yamakoshi holds 11 events during the bullfighting season from May to November.

Twenty-six bulls, each weighing around a ton, took part in the year's final event.

The fight involves two bulls that lock horns in a battle of strength, while their handlers loudly urge them on. The bouts always end in a draw so that the animals are not injured.

The organizer said the event drew more visitors than last year, totaling about 8,000. Japanese authorities lifted all anti-coronavirus restrictions in May.

A man in his 60s from Tokyo said the bullfights were impressive and that he was glad he came.

Matsui Tomie, who heads Yamakoshi's bullfighting association, said that next year local people will mark the 20th anniversary of the Niigata Chuetsu earthquake, which severely damaged Yamakoshi. He expressed hope that many visitors will come to the area to help it recover from the disaster.
