A team with the World Health Organization is describing the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip as "a death zone" and the situation there as "desperate."

The WHO says they conducted an on-site inspection of Al-Shifa hospital on Saturday. Israeli forces had raided the facility, claiming that they were searching for Hamas's command and control center.

During the roughly one-hour inspection of the hospital, the team says it found clear signs of shelling and gunfire. It also says it saw "a mass grave" at the entrance of the facility and was told more than 80 people were buried there.

The team says 25 health workers and 291 patients were remaining at the hospital. It says several patients had died over the course of the past few days "due to the shutting down of medical services."

The humanitarian situation is no better in southern Gaza, where people are being asked to evacuate in order to escape fierce attacks in the north.

In the southern city of Rafah, people are facing acute food shortages.

Video taken in the city on Thursday by cameraman Salam Abu Tahoun at NHK's Gaza office shows many people queuing up and waiting for a grocery store to open.

A US newspaper has reported Israel and Hamas are close to a deal in which the Palestinian Islamic group will free some hostages in the Gaza Strip in exchange for a pause in fighting between the two sides.

The Washington Post on Saturday said the deal could lead to the release of dozens of women and children held in the enclave in return for a five-day pause.

The newspaper said the United States was brokering the agreement, and quoted sources close to the matter as saying the hostage release could "begin within the next several days -- barring last-minute hitches" and that it could "lead to the first sustained pause in conflict in Gaza."

The report said, "A detailed, six-page set of written terms would require all parties to the conflict to freeze combat operations for at least five days while an initial 50 or more hostages are released in smaller batches every 24 hours."

It added that it was "not immediately clear how many of the 239 people believed to be in captivity in Gaza" would be released under the deal.

White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said no deal had been made yet but work continues to reach one.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden told a news conference that his country was negotiating to secure a period needed for hostage release, suggesting that the US was trying to persuade Israel to agree to a pause in fighting.

North Korean media have so far made no mention of a new national holiday to commemorate one year since the successful launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile. There have also been no media reports on North Korean Leader Kim Jung Un for almost one month.

North Korea launched the Hwasong-17, which is said to be capable of reaching anywhere on the US mainland, on November 18 last year.

The front page of the Sunday-edition of the country's ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun, includes an article calling for the top economic targets for this year to be achieved. No articles about "missile industry day" were to be seen anywhere in the paper.

Meanwhile, there have been no media reports on Kim since his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was reported on October 20. If Kim stays out of media reporting until next Saturday, it would be the second longest period of his absence from media since he took office.

Some countries are closely watching for the North's next move, as Pyongyang has been warning that it will carry out its third launch of a military spy satellite. The North has also recently tested a solid-fuel engine for a new intermediate-range ballistic missile.

South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik says "within a week or so" Pyongyang may conduct its third launch of a military spy satellite.

Shin made the remarks in a TV program aired on the country's public broadcaster KBS on Sunday.

He said South Korea and the United States are monitoring the North's movements as the launch could take place in the next week or by November 30.

The defense minister said Pyongyang is believed to have largely resolved engine problems with Russian help to make way for a satellite launch.

The Philippines has expressed concern to China over incidents between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea. The leaders of the two countries have discussed possible ways to ease tensions.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in San Francisco on Friday.

In October, a Chinese Coast Guard vessel collided with a Philippine military supply boat near the Spratly Islands.

Marcos said he brought up the plight of Filipino fishermen who have complained of Chinese vessels preventing them from fishing in the area.

Marcos also said the two leaders both agreed that the problems they have in the South China Sea should not be the defining element of their relationship.

Marcos and Xi last met in person in January when the Philippine leader visited China. Marcos said he requested Friday's meeting.

Australia's defense ministry has criticized a Chinese military destroyer for engaging in "unsafe and unprofessional conduct." It says Australian naval divers were injured when the Chinese vessel used sonar in an area where they were operating.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles issued a statement on Saturday. He said an Australian frigate was in international waters inside Japan's exclusive economic zone on Tuesday when it stopped to clear away fishing nets that had become entangled around its propellers.

Marles said the Chinese destroyer approached the Australian vessel while diving operations were underway. He said the Australian side informed the Chinese ship that divers were operating in the area and asked the ship to stay clear. But the minister said the ship used its sonar in a manner that posed a risk to the safety of the Australian divers. Marles said the divers sustained minor injuries.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited China earlier this month. It was the first visit to the country by an Australian prime minister in seven years. The incident is likely to put a damper on the amicable relationship between the nations.

A large unmanned spacecraft developed by US company SpaceX was launched for a test flight on Saturday, but failed to complete its mission.

Starship, which was developed to carry astronauts to the Moon and ultimately to Mars, lifted off from a launch base in southern Texas for its second flight test.

The 120-meter-long spacecraft slowly ascended on the Super Heavy Booster and made it through a successful stage separation about 3 minutes after lift-off.

Although it continued to boost higher, communication was lost with the vehicle shortly afterwards.

SpaceX said that they "may have lost the second stage."

The company made various improvements, including to the joint section between the two stages, following the first flight test in April when Starship exploded at about 4 minutes after lift-off.

A lot is at stake in the success of the Starship program, as US space agency NASA has a contract with SpaceX for its manned Lunar program Artemis.

The British broadcaster BBC says nearly 20,000 men have fled Ukraine to escape being drafted as fighting with Russian forces drags on.

The BBC reported on Friday that based on data from neighboring countries such as Romania, nearly 20,000 men are believed to have illegally crossed into those countries since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022 to August this year.

Some men reportedly swam across rivers, while others walked across borders to neighboring countries under the cover of night.

The BBC also said that some 21,000 other men attempted to flee, but were caught by Ukrainian authorities.
After Russia's invasion, most men aged 18 to 60 were banned from leaving the country due to general mobilization.

But corruption, such as bribery to escape conscription, has become a social problem, making the securing of military personnel a challenge.

Meanwhile, Russia has been carrying out drone attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. On Saturday, Ukraine's air force said it shot down 29 out of 38 drones launched from Russia.

In the southern region of Odesa, local authorities said drones struck energy infrastructure, with one person injured in a fire caused by the attack.

A British defense ministry intelligence update on Saturday said the most intense ground combat has taken place in three areas: Kupiansk and Avdiivka in the east, and on the east bank of the Dnipro River in the southern region of Kherson.

The ministry also said that as colder winter weather sets in, there are few immediate prospects of major changes on the frontline.
