Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders have reaffirmed their determination to deliver a free, open and transparent trade and investment environment in a declaration released after the end of their summit.

The two-day APEC meeting was held in the United States in the west-coast city of San Francisco.

The summit ended on Friday with a speech by this year's chair, US President Joe Biden. Biden said the leaders "worked together to find ways to build on inclusive, resilient and sustained economies for the Asia-Pacific."

Biden touched upon the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine in the chairman's statement. But they were not mentioned in the leaders' declaration.

A senior Biden administration official told NHK that with Russia and China present, it was not easy to reach consensus on those issues at APEC. The official criticized the two countries for what the administration calls an attempt to distract from critical issues.

APEC is a regional economic forum of 21 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region. Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio attended this year's APEC summit. Peru will host next year's APEC forum.

After the meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders, Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said he will continue to make efforts to get the international community to work together.

The two-day APEC summit in San Francisco ended on Friday.

Kishida told reporters that Japan has coordinated with its allies and like-minded countries in an effort to build a free and open international order based on the rule of law.

He added they have stirred diverse discussions that sincerely contributed to initiatives to resolve each and every challenge.

Kishida also reflected on his bilateral summit with US President Joe Biden. He says the two countries confirmed further cooperation as allies, keeping in mind various issues concerning the Middle East, Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific region.

Kishida spoke on the achievements of the Japan-China summit meeting. Kishida and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Thursday for the first time in a year.

He said Japan and China have various possibilities for cooperation, and also challenges and pending issues. He stressed that the two countries held constructive dialogue from a broad perspective.

The Japanese prime minister also commented on the discussion he had over China suspending Japanese seafood imports following Japan's release of treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Kishida said his country will take every opportunity to strongly call for the immediate lifting of the suspension and would like to encourage scientific analysis, calm judgment based on facts and a constructive attitude.

He added that he believes that scientific analysis of the treated water shows it is safe, and understanding based on facts is commonly shared internationally.

A doctor at the largest hospital in Gaza has reportedly said Israeli forces have found nothing in their search for a Hamas command center at the facility.

Israeli troops are said to have seized several buildings within the Al-Shifa compound since launching a raid on Wednesday.

On Friday, they said that they have found the body of a soldier held hostage by Hamas nearby.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US-based CBS Television on Thursday that there are "strong indications" that hostages were held in the hospital.

On Friday, Israel Defense Forces officials said Hamas fighters have also been present at other hospitals in Gaza.

Footage they released shows a motorcycle purportedly found in a basement of one hospital. A military officer says Hamas used the vehicle to transport hostages.

Hamas denies using hospitals for military purposes.

Reuters news agency interviewed a doctor at Al-Shifa Hospital by phone on Friday. He is quoted as saying that Israeli tanks and troops have been moving all over the compound.

The doctor said, "They have found nothing. They have found no single resistance. No single gunshot against them within the hospital area."

Israel is showing no sign of backing down, and a chief military spokesperson suggested on Friday that the offensive may be expanded.

He said they are determined to advance their operation "wherever Hamas exists, including in the south of the strip."

Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis, and international criticism of Israel's actions is growing.

On Friday, the country's war cabinet said it will allow two fuel tankers into the enclave each day to support the sewage system, adding that the measure comes in response to a request from Washington.

The US State Department has approved a possible sale of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Japan and notified Congress of its decision.

The department gave the greenlight for the sale of up to 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles to Japan on Friday.

The estimated total cost including the system's related equipment is 2.35 billion dollars.

The approval came after an agreement last month between Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. They agreed to Japan's plan to acquire the missiles starting in the fiscal year that begins in April 2025. The weapons are currently deployed mainly by US forces.

The Tomahawk is a US-developed guided cruise missile with the capability to strike targets with high precision.

The Japanese government plans to use the missile to help boost its counterstrike capabilities, such as to attack enemy missile-launch sites.
