Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has reaffirmed with his Malaysian counterpart that the two nations will strengthen their security cooperation.
Kishida met with Anwar Ibrahim at the Malaysian Prime Minister's office near the capital Kuala Lumpur for about two hours on Sunday.
The two leaders agreed to promote bilateral diplomatic and security dialogue to tighten security cooperation with China's increased military assertiveness at sea in mind.
They also confirmed that their countries should accelerate coordination for the use of Japan's new security assistance framework called the Official Security Assistance, or OSA, which is designed to provide military equipment and supplies to like-minded countries.
They also agreed to economic cooperation, including the promotion of better conditions for investment and decarbonization.
They also discussed the situation in the East and South China Seas and Ukraine.
They shared the stance that they will not tolerate any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo anywhere in the world.
On the conflict between Israel and Hamas, Kishida called for the conflict to be stopped from spilling over to neighboring countries and for prompt de-escalation and mitigation measures for the humanitarian crisis.
After the talks, Kishida told reporters that Anwar will visit Japan next month, when Tokyo hosts a summit with ASEAN leaders.
He said he looks forward to stronger relations not just with ASEAN, but also bilaterally with Malaysia.

Senior US and Chinese officials have conveyed their concerns about maritime activity in the South China Sea. Both sides confirmed the importance of dialogue and open lines of communication.
Mark Lambert is the US State Department's China Coordinator and Deputy Assistant Secretary for China and Taiwan.
He met in the Chinese capital Beijing on Friday with Hong Liang, China's Director-General for Boundary and Ocean Affairs.
A statement released after their meeting underscored US concerns over China's "dangerous and unlawful actions in the South China Sea," including its obstruction of a Philippine military resupply mission in October.
China's foreign ministry expressed serious concerns about US "incitement to support infringements and provocations by parties in the South China Sea."
It urged Washington to play a constructive role for peace and stability in the region.
The Chinese ministry said both sides agreed to seek ways to explore mutually beneficial cooperation by strengthening dialogue and communication.
The meeting in Beijing appears to be laying the groundwork for a meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during the APEC summit in San Francisco in mid-November.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has underlined the US position calling for humanitarian pauses to help civilians in Gaza, saying that a ceasefire would only benefit Hamas.
After visiting Israel, Blinken met his Arab counterparts, including ones from Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in Jordan on Saturday.
After the meeting, Blinken gave a news conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
Blinken told reporters that they talked about humanitarian aid and ways to prevent the fighting from spilling over to other areas.
Safadi and Shoukry said that an immediate ceasefire is needed to protect civilians.
But Blinken reaffirmed US support for Israel's right to defend itself.
He disagreed with his Arab counterparts, saying that "A ceasefire now would simply leave Hamas in place, able to regroup and repeat what it did on October 7."
He added that he shares the concern about the plight of civilians in Gaza. He expressed his willingness to continue trying to persuade Israel to take humanitarian pauses to allow aid supplies to be brought in and let civilians evacuate.

A Japanese expert says volcanic eruptions near the Pacific island of Ioto, also known as Iwojima, have created a new islet.
Associate Professor Maeno Fukashi of the University of Tokyo's Earthquake Research Institute conducted an aerial survey over Ioto Island, which is part of the Ogasawara island chain, on October 30.
He observed black plumes, which contained rocks, spewing out of the sea every few minutes, about one kilometer off the southern coast of Ioto.
He said that the plumes reached heights of more than 50 meters. He added that some of the rocks thrown up into the air by the eruptions were several meters in size.
Maeno suspects that steam eruptions, caused by magma coming into contact with seawater, are taking place.
He said that a round and blackish islet measuring about 100 meters in diameter was formed north of the plumes.
Maeno said the surface of the islet is covered with rugged rocks. He noted this suggests that rocks thrown up by the eruptions piled up and created the islet.
A volcanic vent has not been observed on the little island, but floating bands of pumice have been seen around it. There has also apparently been a noticeable change in the color of the seawater around the islet.
Maeno indicated it is likely that eruptions are occurring at two or more locations.
He said eruptions have occurred in the area before. But the associate professor said it had been a long time since volcanic activity there had reached the level at which it could cause magma to create an islet.
He also said there are reports that the islet is still expanding. He added it is possible that the little island will keep expanding, if eruptions continue to occur.
