A group of demonstrators in Hong Kong has temporally occupied the bus terminal of the territory's airport. Some of them are now trying to block roads and rail tracks leading to and from the airport.

The protesters filled the bus terminal on Sunday afternoon in response to a call to disrupt transportation to Hong Kong's international airport.

They shouted slogans like "We stand with Hong Kong, we fight for freedom."

Some of the demonstrators squared off with the police after trying to break into the airport building.

Although most of the protesters left the venue due to a stern warning of a police crackdown on social network services, some began to disrupt transport connections between the airport and the city.

They have begun to block a major road with vehicles and other objects, and have thrown metal pipes and other items onto rail tracks.

Travelers who arrived at the airport have been effectively stranded there, without transportation.

The latest round of protests took place on Saturday and Sunday, with some demonstrators clashing with police.

Hong Kong government officials say a total of 31 people have been injured in the clashes.

The pro-democracy protests that lasted for nearly three months show no signs of ending.

Students are calling for a boycott of classes on Monday, the first day of the new term. Strikes are planned in a wide range of industries.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has implemented additional tariffs of about 15 percent on 110 billion dollars' worth of Chinese imports.

The levies are on more than 3,200 goods including LCD TVs, watches, and furniture. US tariffs now cover nearly 70 percent of Chinese imports.

Beijing hit back immediately with measures of its own, slapping tariffs of up to 10 percent on over 1,700 US goods including crude oil and soybeans.

The two countries say they are willing to continue escalating their trade spat by imposing further tariffs as early as December.

The Trump administration has adopted an approach of attempting to win concessions from China through tariffs.

But Beijing has shown it will not back down on issues it considers important, and has been responding with levies of its own.

Japanese authorities conducted a drill to prepare for a mega earthquake striking the Tokyo metropolitan area for National Disaster Prevention Day on Sunday.

September 1 is the day Japan commemorates the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, which left more than 100,000 people dead in and around Tokyo.

This year's exercise was based on the scenario of a magnitude 7.3 quake occurring around 7:00 a.m., with an epicenter within the Tokyo's 23 central wards, and registering 6 or 7 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in the southern Kanto region.

As part of the drill, ministers and officials gathered at the prime minister's office and held an emergency task force meeting. They were informed of the extent of damage and discussed the government response.

Also they held a video conference with the governor of Chiba Prefecture, where severe damage could be expected in such a major quake. They were informed of the situation and assessed what kind of assistance would be needed.

The cabinet ministers confirmed basic principles, such as putting priority on search-and-rescue operations and maintaining the functions of Tokyo as the country's capital.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave a news conference, explaining the government's response and calling on people to evacuate to safe places and stay calm.

Other disaster drills were held across Japan on Sunday.

Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has advanced to the fourth round of the US Open, beating 15-year-old American sensation Coco Gauff in straight sets.

Top seed and world No.1 Osaka is looking to defend her US Open crown. Gauff, who is ranked No.140, made headlines earlier this summer when she advanced to the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

They faced each other for the first time in their careers on Saturday. Osaka looked sharp from the start, taking a quick 3-0 lead in the first set. Gauff was able to get into a bit of a groove but Osaka closed out with a powerful service game. She took the set 6-3.

The second set was a more straightforward affair, with Osaka cruising to a 6-0 win.

She will face world No. 12 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland in the fourth round.
