Nearly 120,000 households in Chiba Prefecture remained without power as of 7 p.m. on Sunday, almost a week after a severe typhoon struck.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says work to restore electricity may have to be suspended due to weather conditions.

TEPCO cites the need to ensure safety, as localized thunderstorms are forecast from Sunday night through Monday.

The utility said earlier it would restore power in most parts of the cities of Chiba, Ichihara and Kisarazu by Monday. It said it would restore power in southern parts of the prefecture by September 27, including the cities of Minamiboso and Tateyama.

TEPCO now says it may take longer to restore power in some districts, as workers are repairing damaged facilities and confirming the stability of the power supply.

Saturday's drone attacks on major oil facilities in Saudi Arabia are causing concerns over global oil supplies.

Although the extent of the damage is still unclear, some media say about half of the country's crude oil production output has been disrupted. They say the attacks will cut the kingdom's output by about 5 million barrels per day.

The predawn drone attacks set off fires at Saudi Aramco's facilities in Abqaiq and Khurais. The Saudi government says the blazes are now under control. Abqaiq is home to one of the world's largest oil processing plants and is considered the kingdom's lifeline for oil exports.

Houthi insurgents supported by Iran said in a statement that they used 10 drones to carry out the attacks.
The facilities are about 1,200 kilometers away from Houthi strongholds, but experts say the rebels have drones that can reach long-range targets.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for the attacks, tweeting "Tehran is behind nearly 100 attacks on Saudi Arabia." He added: "Iran has now launched an unprecedented attack on the world's energy supply. There is no evidence the attacks came from Yemen." Pompeo called on all countries to condemn Iran for the attacks, saying the US will work with its allies to hold Tehran accountable.

Officials at the White House say US President Donald Trump spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman by phone on Saturday. They say Trump condemned the attacks and told the prince that Washington is ready to work with the kingdom to guarantee its security.

The US energy department says it is prepared to deploy resources to offset any disruption to global oil markets.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has made a renewed appeal for peace talks after US President Donald Trump abruptly called off negotiations with the Taliban.

He said in a speech on Saturday that legitimate peace can only be achieved by direct dialogue, not by war.

Trump suspended peace talks with the militant group on September 7 after the insurgents killed 12 people, including a US soldier, in a car bomb attack in Kabul.

It came just days after Washington said that both sides had agreed on a draft peace accord in principle.

Meanwhile, delegates of the Taliban visited Moscow.

Russian media reported that they met with President Vladimir Putin's envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, on Friday.

It is believed that Russia underscored the need to talk with Washington and the Taliban confirmed their readiness to engage.

One Taliban negotiator told NHK that they will not abandon the fight until all US troops leave Afghanistan but they also have begun preparations for renewed talks.

But a revival of talks down the road is rendered uncertain in light of the vow by both the US and the Taliban to step up battlefield attacks.

Officials in Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo, have culled about 800 pigs after swine fever was detected at a hog farm.

The prefectural government started putting down pigs at the farm in Chichibu City late on Friday after the virus was detected earlier in the day.

About 150 people took part in the work through early Sunday.

Prefectural officials say they will bury the culled animals and decontaminate the farm to prevent the spread of the virus. They expect to complete the work on Monday.

The officials will also disinfect vehicles that come in and out of farms within 10 kilometers of the stricken farm until mid-October.

They will conduct on-site inspections in the event of any irregularity, such as pig deaths.

Swine fever was confirmed in 2018 in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, for the first time in 26 years in the country.

This is the first case in the Kanto region around Tokyo, which is home to nearly a quarter of Japan's pigs.

Saitama prefectural officials are working to determine the source of the infection.

Japan's two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu has won the Autumn Classic International in Oakville, Canada, marking a victorious start to the 2019-2020 season.

Hanyu came out on top in his free skate on Saturday, after winning the short program on Friday.

Hanyu made a shaky landing in the opening quad loop and stepped out of a quad Salchow. He also under-rotated the second quad toe loop, but managed to land a flawless combination jump with a triple Axel. The double-gold medalist also achieved the highest-level four ratings for his steps and spins.

Hanyu scored 180.67 points in the free skate, racking up a winning total of 279.05.

Hanyu said that he was a little surprised that he lost his balance in the quad loop and the quad Salchow.

He said he never had difficulty with loops before and said that he was disappointed because he was in good shape until he got there. He added that he wanted to have skated without making any mistakes.

Hanyu is turning his attention to two events at the ISU Grand Prix series. He will compete at Skate Canada International in October in Kelowna, British Columbia and NHK Trophy in November in Sapporo, Japan.
