Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will leave for New York on Monday to attend the UN General Assembly and hold bilateral summits with US and Iranian leaders.

Abe will give a speech at the UN General Assembly. He will meet separately with US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to help ease tensions in the Middle East following attacks on Saudi Arabian oil facilities.

Abe is also expected to discuss with Trump a new bilateral trade deal. The two leaders will not sign the deal as initially expected to allow time for legal issues to be checked. They are likely to go over the final draft of the document.

Abe is not expected to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in while in New York.

After New York, Abe will travel to Brussels, Belgium, to attend the "EU-Asia Connectivity" forum and give a speech on the importance of strengthening political and economic relations between Europe and Asia.

US President Donald Trump has arrived in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly and hold one-on-one talks with a number of world leaders.

Trump will host the Global Call to Protect Religious Freedom event on Monday at the UN.

On Tuesday, he will deliver a UN address for the third time as US president. He is expected to mention Iran, and possibly North Korea.

His speech comes amid growing tensions between the US and Iran following the attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

Trump is expected to use his speech and bilateral talks to promote the US stance and urge world leaders to step up pressure on Iran.

Trump plans to meet with more than 10 leaders, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

Trump said on Sunday, "Nothing is ever off the table completely, but I have no intention of meeting with Iran."

Trump and Abe are also expected to discuss trade.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has harshly criticized China for its treatment of the Uighur ethnic minority.

Pompeo made the criticism on Sunday in New York at a meeting with foreign ministers of Central Asian nations, including Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The two countries neighbor China.

He said China's repressive campaign in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is not about terrorism, but about China's attempt to erase minority cultures and religions.

He called on Central Asian nations to resist Beijing's demands to repatriate Muslim Uighurs.

Washington aims to call out treatment of the Uighurs in China as representatives from around the world gather in New York for the UN General Assembly.

China has detained many Muslim minority people in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in what it says are job training centers to prevent acts of terror stemming from poverty and lack of jobs.

China on Sunday published a white paper on the country's human rights situation saying its efforts in that area have developed largely over the past seven decades, since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

China has reacted sharply to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's attack on Beijing's policy regarding the Uighur ethnic minority.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang on Monday accused Pompeo of brutally interfering in China's internal affairs.

He told reporters that he expresses deep dissatisfaction and resolute opposition.

Geng suggested that China's policy on Uighurs has been focused on anti-terror measures and essentially does not differ from those of the United States and elsewhere.

He said China advises Pompeo to drop his double standards and refrain from commenting on issues involving the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

US White House senior Asia adviser, Matt Pottinger, will become the new deputy national security adviser.

National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien made the announcement on Sunday, just days after being appointed by President Donald Trump.

Pottinger worked for the Wall Street Journal as a journalist. After enlisting in the Marine Corps, he served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under Trump, Pottinger has overseen Japan-US ties and helped draw up policies on China and North Korea.

He accompanied the president when he held talks with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as well as his first meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last year.

Pottinger has also repeatedly met relatives of Japanese nationals abducted to North Korea to help resolve the abduction issue.

O'Brien said Pottinger is "a team player," and that he is going to help bring cohesion to the National Security Council. He added that Trump places great trust in Pottinger.

Earlier this month, Trump fired John Bolton as national security adviser.

South Korean prosecutors have raided the home of Justice Minister Cho Kuk following a series of corruption allegations.

The prosecutors started their search of Cho's residence in Seoul on Monday morning.

They are believed to have seized computer hard drives and other items.

It is extremely rare for South Korean prosecutors to search the home of a sitting justice minister.

Cho faces allegations that his daughter unfairly gained admission to a prestigious university, and that his family made a questionable investment in a private equity fund.

Despite the allegations, President Moon Jae-in appointed Cho as justice minister earlier this month.

Prosecutors have arrested one of Cho's relatives and have questioned his daughter.

Cho has said he wants to reform South Korea's prosecution system. Moon is currently out of the country, visiting New York to attend the UN General Assembly.

The South Korean government has launched a nationwide disinfection operation to try to contain an outbreak of African swine fever.

The virus is fatal and highly contagious for pigs. South Korea confirmed the first case last Tuesday in Paju in Gyeonggi Province, near the demilitarized zone with North Korea.

Other outbreaks have been reported since then.

South Korea's Agriculture Ministry deployed the military on Monday to disinfect all pig farms in the country.

The wholesale price of pork in South Korea rose sharply last week following reports of the first outbreak.

The United Nations has warned that the average global temperature could rise by 3.4 degrees Celsius by the end of this century and is calling for action to stop global warming.

A report that brings together scientific findings by the World Meteorological Organization and other groups was released on Sunday to inform the Climate Action Summit to be held the next day in New York.

The report says the average global temperature for 2015 to 2019 is estimated to be 0.2 degrees above the previous five-year period, and 1.1 degrees warmer than the pre-industrial period of 1850 to 1900.

It says that the sea level rise is accelerating, and ocean acidity has increased by 26 percent since the beginning of the industrial era due to absorbed carbon dioxide.

The report says greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase, because fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum are still used as main energy sources.

The report warns that the continued situation could lead to an average global temperature rise of 3.4 degrees by 2100, even if governments achieved promised emission cuts.

It says limiting the increase to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels would require nations to step up their efforts.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging world leaders to heed these facts and take urgent action.

NHK has learned that Afghanistan's Taliban insurgent group and the administration of US President Donald Trump were planning to invite the foreign ministers of Japan and 22 other countries to a signing ceremony if a peace accord had been reached.

Earlier this month, the US and the Taliban agreed in principle on a draft peace accord, which includes a partial withdrawal of the US military from Afghanistan.

But President Trump called off the negotiations after a terrorist incident claimed by the Taliban.

In an exclusive interview with NHK, Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban spokesperson who took part in the peace negotiations, said the two sides only needed to sign the document to finalize the accord.

He said the signing ceremony had been planned to take place in Qatar's capital, Doha.

Shaheen said the Taliban and the US had agreed that they would invite foreign ministers from 23 countries, including Japan, Russia and China, to the ceremony to have them confirm the contents of the accord.

Japan has provided Afghanistan with around 6.6 billion dollars in aid to help its reconstruction. The Taliban official expressed gratitude for Japan's support. He said he hopes Japan will continue to play a role in the country's rebuilding.

Observers say some hardline Taliban members are opposed to the peace talks and that the prospects for peace remains unclear.

Hairy crabs are back in season in China as shipments of the autumn delicacy have begun in the eastern province of Jiangsu.

Yangcheng Lake in Suzhou is renowned for its haul of premium-quality crustaceans. More than 1,000 people attended an event on Monday to mark the start of shipments.

Crabbers on boats were seen hauling adult crabs weighing about 400 grams.

Compared to about a decade ago, the local government has significantly reduced the breeding grounds of the lake, citing the need to improve water quality.

Fishers say the measure improved the water, and that this year's crab shipments will likely be up about 100 tons from the previous year.

A crab farmer says a bountiful, top-quality harvest is expected at the lake this year.

The crabs will be shipped mainly to major cities in China, including Beijing and Shanghai. They will also be exported to Japan and elsewhere.
