Turkish team arrives at Taiwan to help search missing people in quake-hit area

Members of a Turkish rescue team have arrived in Taiwan's quake-hit areas, becoming the first foreign team on the scene.

Taiwan authorities say that 13 people have been confirmed dead and six others remain missing following the earthquake on Wednesday.

Rain, tremors, and the risk of falling rocks are hampering efforts around Taiwan's popular tourist destination Taroko Gorge in the eastern county of Hualien, near the epicenter. Most of the missing people are believed to be in the area.

The Turkish team members who specialize in using drones headed to the site around the gorge on Sunday morning after going over a search and rescue plan with the Taiwan authorities.
Taiwanese authorities say they are ready to work with the Turkish team.

The leader of the Turkish team said that the people of Taiwan offered their support when Turkey was hit by a powerful earthquake last year, and now it is Turkey's turn to do the same.

Rescue efforts are underway for more than 300 people stranded around the gorge where roads are blocked.

About 10 local residents were airlifted on Sunday morning.

Anti-Netanyahu protests across Israel as Gaza conflict marks 6 months

Israeli protesters took to the streets across the country on Saturday, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In Tel Aviv, thousands of people took part in a massive anti-Netanyahu protest on Saturday evening.

The demonstrators criticized Netanyahu for prolonging the fighting, and for failing to negotiate the release of more than 130 hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip.

One man said Netanyahu is playing with hostages' lives for political reasons. He said Israel should accept a deal now on the table, because the lives of hostages are what matter most.

Another man accused the prime minister of prolonging the war without a solution to end the fighting.

Sunday marks six months since the conflict erupted between Israeli forces and the Islamic group Hamas.

About 1,200 people were initially killed when Hamas fighters crossed the border and launched attacks on October 7 last year. That prompted the Israeli military to launch a retaliatory operation.

Health authorities in Gaza say more than 33,000 people have been killed there. They say the humanitarian situation has worsened as Israeli forces continue air strikes and other offensives.

United Nations aid agencies are warning that famine is looming in Gaza.

Hamas released a statement on Saturday that said it is sending delegation to Egypt on Sunday to negotiate a ceasefire.

US news website Axios reports that American and Israeli delegations, along with officials from the countries mediating the negotiations, are expected to meet in Egypt in an attempt to break the deadlock.

But there are still wide disagreements between the warring sides.

Hamas is calling for a permanent ceasefire, while Israel is poised to launch a ground offensive in Rafah, to exterminate Hamas.

Taiwan media: Vice President-elect followed by China military diplomat in Prague

Media outlets in Taiwan say Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim was followed by a Chinese military diplomat in the Czech capital Prague.

Hsiao will become Taiwan's next vice president in May and visited the Czech Republic in March.

An official of a Czech think tank posted local media reports about the incident on social media.

Based on these reports, several Taiwanese media outlets said on Saturday that Hsiao's motorcade was followed by a car from Prague airport to the city center.

They said the suspicious car ran a red light at an intersection, almost causing an accident.

Police officers stopped the car and discovered it was driven by a diplomat from the military section of the Chinese Embassy in Prague.

Taiwan's foreign ministry said it made inquiries with Czech authorities who have opened an investigation.

The Vice President-elect had served as Taiwan's representative in the United States until November 2023.

Chinese authorities believe that in August 2022, Hsiao facilitated the visit to Taiwan by then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and imposed sanctions on her.

Mexico cuts diplomatic ties with Ecuador over embassy raid by police

Mexico has announced that it is cutting diplomatic ties with Ecuador following the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president at its embassy in a police raid.

The Ecuadorian government said that police entered the Mexican embassy in capital Quito and took Jorge Glas into custody on Friday.

Glas served four years as Ecuador's vice president with leftist President Rafael Correa from 2013 to 2017.

He was accused of corruption and other charges and imprisoned until he was provisionally released.

Glas has resided in the Mexican embassy since December last year, seeking political asylum.

The police raid took place shortly after Mexico granted him asylum on Friday.

The Mexican foreign ministry said that it is breaking diplomatic relations with Ecuador "in view of the flagrant and serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, in particular of the principle of inviolability of diplomatic premises."

It says it will file a complaint with the International Court of Justice.

Ecuador says that it will not allow any criminal to go unpunished.

Former Johnny & Associates members call for eliminating child sex abuse

A group of retired performers who used to be with a scandal-ridden Japanese talent agency have held an event to discuss ways to stamp out child sex abuse.

The five people allege they were sexually abused by the late founder of the talent agency previously known as Johnny & Associates, Johnny Kitagawa. They have launched an organization to work for the elimination of sexual violence against children.

More than one hundred people took part in the event in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward on Saturday.

Four experts spoke about sexual assaults and the importance of sex education.

Lawyer Kamitani Sakura said the criminal law that was amended last year includes tougher laws against sexual crimes.

She said there is a limit to what the law can do to crack down on sexual abusers and that society needs to create an environment in which children can be aware they are being victimized and take the case to court.

The experts stressed the need to review sex education in schools.

The former performers said if they were more aware about sex and sexual abuse at the time, they could have prevented what happened.

A participant in her 60s said she was glad the former Johnny & Associates members had spoken out about their abuse and shed light on the problem. She said she wants to support their activities.

One of the organizing members, Nihongi Akimasa, said they may never be able to forget what had happened to them, even if they are compensated. He said by continuing the group's activity, he hopes more people will become aware of the problem.

US, China agree to discuss balanced economic growth

The United States and China have agreed to hold intensive exchanges on balanced economic growth amid concerns about China's industrial overcapacity in the electric vehicle and other sectors.

The agreement came during a two-day meeting between US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, held on Friday and Saturday in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The US Treasury Department issued a statement on Saturday, quoting Yellen as saying that the two sides agreed to hold intensive exchanges on balanced growth in the domestic and global economies.

Yellen said, "These exchanges will facilitate a discussion around macroeconomic imbalances, including their connection to overcapacity."

She added, "I am particularly concerned about the impact of Chinese industrial overcapacity in certain sectors as a result of government support, and the impact it could have on the American economy."

Yellen explained, "I firmly believe a shift away from policies that drive overcapacity would benefit the American, Chinese, and global economies."

China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported that, "The Chinese side expressed grave concern over US economic and trade measures restricting China and responded fully to the issue of production capacity."

The US and China have been at odds with each other over China's policy to grant subsidies to EV manufacturers and the US export restrictions on semiconductors. Attention is focused on whether the two sides can find common ground in future talks.
