Iranian media report explosions heard in central region

Iran's Fars news agency says explosions were heard in the central province of Isfahan.

The news agency said on Friday the cause of the sounds is unknown. The explosions were reportedly heard in an area in the province's northwest near the Isfahan airport and an Iranian air force base.

Iran's state-run media also reported explosive sounds in Isfahan, and that air defense systems have been activated in several provinces.

Another Iranian media, Mehr news agency, said that flights have been suspended at several airports in the country.

ABC News and other US media have reported that Israel has launched a missile attack on Iran, citing US government officials.

ABC News, on Thursday night, quoted a senior government official as saying that Israel fired missiles in retaliation to Iran's drone and missile attacks on Israel.

Citing a government official, CNN reported that Israel's attack was not targeted at Iran's nuclear related sites.

Israel had threatened to take retaliatory measures against Iran's large-scale missile and drone attack on Saturday through Sunday. But it is not known yet if there is any connection to the sounds of explosions heard on Friday.

One Japanese injured in car attack in Karachi, Pakistan

The Japanese consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, says one Japanese man suffered minor injuries when the car he was in came under attack in the southern port city on Friday.

The consulate says the Japanese national is a resident of Karachi. It says he is being treated at a hospital, but that his condition is not life-threatening.

Local media quoted authorities as saying that a suspect with a bomb attacked a van carrying Japanese nationals. Police are investigating details.

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city, with a large port and an international airport. It is a home to many Japanese businesses.

The country has seen a series of terrorist attacks against Chinese nationals. Late last month, five Chinese engineers were killed when a car loaded with explosives rammed into a convoy heading to a dam construction site in the country's northwest.

India begins 'world's largest general election'

What is being called the world's largest general election kicks off in India on Friday, with roughly 970 million eligible voters. It pits Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party against an opposition alliance.

The voting to choose members of the lower house is staggered, with seven different polling dates set for constituencies across the country. The seventh and final phase of voting will take place on June 1.

Modi, who belongs to the governing Bharatiya Janata Party, is seeking a third term in office. An opposition alliance centering around the Indian National Congress party is aiming to grab the reins of government.

The ruling and opposition camps have been campaigning vigorously to drum up voter support.

The BJP says that under the Modi government, India's gross domestic product has grown to the world's fifth largest and is predicted to expand to rank third as early as 2027.

The opposition accuses the Modi administration of allowing wealth inequality to widen in pursuit of economic development. It also says the government has failed to create enough jobs for young people.

Recent opinion surveys put the BJP ahead of the opposition alliance. However, regional parties that are part of the opposition alliance retain strong support in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, where people vote in Phase 1.

Modi attended large public meetings in the state to boost voter support for his party.

Vote counting is due to start on June 4.
