US media: Israel decision makers at odds over how to fight Hamas
The Israeli government appears to be considering how to respond to a recent missile and drone attack conducted by Iran.
Israeli Defense Forces Spokesperson Daniel Hagari said on Tuesday they will act in the place and time they choose.
Reuters news agency reported that the country's war cabinet had postponed a meeting from Tuesday to Wednesday.
The Tuesday edition of the Wall Street Journal said "long-simmering grudges and arguments over how best to fight Hamas have soured relations" between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and former Defense Minister Benny Gantz. They are members of the war cabinet.
The report said the three men are at odds over "how to launch a decisive military push, free Israel's hostages and govern" the postwar Gaza Strip.
It noted, "Now, they also must make one of the biggest decisions the country has ever faced: how to respond to Iran's first-ever direct attack on Israeli territory."
Meanwhile, multiple Israeli media outlets on Tuesday reported on the results of an opinion poll conducted by the Hebrew University.
The survey reportedly showed that 74 percent of the respondents said they oppose a counterstrike on Iran if it undermines Israel's security alliance with its allies.
By contrast, 26 percent were reportedly in favor of such a countermeasure even if it damages the country's ties with allies.

Israel: Most drones, missiles from Iran intercepted
Israel's military says it was able to intercept the vast majority of more than 300 drones and missiles launched from Iran.
Video from Jerusalem shows light moving through the sky then exploding. Earlier, Iran's state-run television reported that the country's Revolutionary Guards launched multiple drones and missiles toward Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.
Iran says the attack was retaliation for one earlier this month on its embassy in Syria that killed a commander and other officers in its Revolutionary Guards. Israel is believed to be behind that attack.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi says the drone and missile operation has taught Israel a lesson, setting a new page in the history of Iran's authority. He warned that any new adventure against the interests of the Iranian nation would be met with a heavier and regretful response.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his country has been preparing for a direct attack by Iran, adding "we are ready for any scenario."
The Israeli military released video of what it says is an air force operation center. The military claims that by using the air defense system Arrow, it was able to intercept almost all missiles before they entered Israeli territory.
Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson Daniel Hagari said, "So far we have intercepted the vast majority of incoming missiles by Israeli systems."
Hagari says an Israeli military facility suffered some damage. The ambulance service says a girl around the age of 10 was critically injured, but the details of her condition are not clear.
US news website Axios quoted a senior White House official as saying President Joe Biden told Netanyahu the joint defensive efforts by Israel, the US and other countries in the region led to the failure of the Iranian attack. Biden also reportedly said: "You got a win. Take the win."
Biden reportedly told Netanyahu the US will not participate in any offensive operations against Iran and will not support such operations, and Netanyahu said he understood.
The Iran-backed Shia militant group Hezbollah says it fired dozens of rockets toward the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights early on Sunday.
The Lebanon-based group said on social media that the attack was launched at 12:35 a.m., local time, targeting air and missile defense systems.
The group said it carried out rocket attacks at dawn as well. Hezbollah did not say if the operation was coordinated with Iran's missile and drone attacks on Israel.
Israel has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The meeting will be held from 20:00 hours UTC on Sunday.

G7 leaders condemn Iran's attack on Israel
The leaders of the Group of Seven nations have condemned the drone and missile attack that Iran conducted against Israel. Tehran says it carried out the assault in response to a strike on its "diplomatic premises" in Syria on April 1.
The leaders held an online meeting on Sunday. Italy, which currently holds the rotating G7 chair, issued a leaders' statement afterwards.
The document states that the leaders "unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms Iran's direct and unprecedented attack against Israel."
The statement says that the leaders express their "full solidarity and support to Israel and its people" and reaffirm their "commitment towards its security."
The statement adds, "With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilization of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation."
It says the leaders "will continue to work to stabilize the situation and avoid further escalation."
The statement demands that "Iran and its proxies cease their attacks." It notes that the leaders "stand ready to take further measures now and in response to further destabilizing initiatives."
Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said during the meeting that his government is deeply concerned about the Iranian attack and strongly condemns it. He said the assault could further exacerbate the situation in the Middle East.
Kishida stressed that the international community as a whole should urge the relevant parties to calm the situation and exercise restraint, in order to prevent tensions from rising further.
He called on the G7 to lead discussions toward that end. The prime minister said that Japan will take a range of diplomatic steps.
Kishida added that Japan wants to work with other G7 countries to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals in the Middle East, and to evacuate them if necessary.

German leader asks China to pressure Russia to end Ukraine invasion
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he has asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to pressure Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine. He also said Germany values economic ties with its largest trading partner, China.
Scholz spoke at a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday, after meeting separately with Xi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Scholz noted that "China's word carries weight in Russia." He said that is why he asked Xi to exert pressure on Russia to end what he called "this terrible war."
On the economy, Scholz alluded to growing concerns in Europe that Chinese government subsidies have led to the overproduction of electric vehicles.
The chancellor said he expressed his concern that "unilateral economic policy decisions in China are creating major structural difficulties for companies in Germany and Europe."
Still, Scholz added that Germany does not want to "decouple from China," and wants "China to continue to be economically successful." He stressed that Germany will place importance on its economic ties with China, while aiming to reduce excessive dependence on it.
Premier Li suggested that Beijing plans to strengthen ties with Berlin, stating that "China is willing to import more high-quality German products."
The comments are believed to be aimed at weakening what China perceives as US efforts to contain Beijing, over security, advanced technology and other issues.

North Korean spy satellite launch appears imminent, US think tank says
A US think tank says satellite images show that while North Korea may have temporarily canceled plans for a spy satellite launch, preparations are underway to proceed with it in the near future.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies, or CSIS, released on Tuesday the results of an analysis of imagery captured early this month of the Sohae satellite-launching station.
The facility is located in Tongchang-ri in the country's northwest.
CSIS researchers say imagery taken on April 8 shows 10 vehicles in the courtyard of the administration and security headquarters. They note, "Such a concentration of vehicles has historically coincided with past test launches."
However, they say these vehicles were gone by April 10, suggesting "that a satellite launch was planned but was canceled for unknown reasons."
The researchers also say an April 8 image shows the presence of three vehicles at a VIP facility that is frequented by leader Kim Jong Un for observing launches. But they say only one vehicle remained by April 10.
They add, "The lingering presence of this vehicle implies that while the launch has been postponed, preparations continue for an anticipated launch in the near future."
North Korea says it put its first military reconnaissance satellite into orbit last November. The country plans to launch three more spy satellites in 2024.
South Korea's Defense Minister pointed out on Sunday that although Pyongyang's preparations for the launch have fallen behind schedule, it could be carried out by the end of April at the latest.

Carp streamers fly in quake-hit street in central Japan ahead of Children's Day
People in Wajima City have hoisted carp streamers to pray for the recovery of their community, which was heavily damaged in the January 1 earthquake that hit Ishikawa Prefecture's Noto Peninsula in central Japan.
Carp streamers are flown to celebrate Children's Day on May 5.
A group of people from Wajima City and Kanazawa City met up in Wajima's Asaichi street, the site of a famous morning market that was largely destroyed in a fire caused by the quake. They put up 10 colorful carp streamers that fluttered in the wind.
The idea behind the event was to give child evacuees a chance to get together.
One of the organizers, Somata Kosaku, said he hoped the decorations would give the children a reason to smile again.
The streamers will stay up until around May 10. The community is also planning an event for Children's Day.
