Biden urges Tehran not to proceed with expected attack on Israel

US President Joe Biden has strongly urged Iran not to attack Israel in connection with an April 1 missile attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria.

Iran has blamed Israel for the fatal attack and vowed to retaliate.

At a news conference on Friday, Biden was asked how imminent he thinks an Iranian attack on Israel may be. He said his expectation is "sooner than later."

Asked about his message to Iran, Biden simply said, "Don't."

He added that the United States is devoted to the defense of Israel, and that Iran "will not succeed."

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters that the reportedly imminent Iranian attack on Israel is a real and viable threat. He said the US was looking at its own force posture in the region and watching the situation very closely.

Also on Friday, CBS News cited multiple officials as saying that a major Iranian attack on Israel may include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country.

The officials reportedly held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation.

Ohtani's ex-interpreter appears in court

The former interpreter for Major League Baseball star Ohtani Shohei, Mizuhara Ippei, has appeared in public for the first time in nearly a month. He surrendered to federal authorities and attended a court hearing over charges that he stole more than 16 million dollars.

The authorities say Mizuhara was taken into custody on Friday morning in Los Angeles. He has been charged with bank fraud and, if convicted, faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and/or a fine of one million dollars.

Mizuhara appeared at a brief court hearing in the afternoon and was released on a bond of 25,000 dollars. He must also adhere to other conditions, including not engaging in gambling and having no contact with Ohtani. After the hearing, he and his lawyers did not take questions from reporters, despite having earlier said they would.

Mizuhara was fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers last month after US media outlets reported he was allegedly involved in illegal gambling. Prosecutors say that he began placing bets with an illegal bookmaker in September 2021 and started losing large sums of money.

They say he then changed the contact information on Ohtani's bank account to give himself access. He also allegedly impersonated Ohtani in phone calls to the bank to ensure large wire transfers to his bookmakers.

He is believed to have carried out the crime without Ohtani's knowledge or permission. Prosecutors stressed that they believe Ohtani to be a "victim" in the case.

Russia restricts passage of foreign ships near Japan's Northern Territories

Japan's coast guard says Russia has issued restrictions on the passage of vessels other than Russian ships in waters near four Russian-held islands from April 11 through 17.

Japan claims the four islands, which it calls the Northern Territories. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

The Japanese government has lodged a protest with Russia, saying the restrictions are unacceptable since the islands are Japan's inherent territory.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea allows ships to pass through the territorial waters of another state as long as they do not threaten the security of the coastal state.

The convention also allows a coastal state to take the steps to block passage of foreign ships in its territorial waters if the country considers doing so necessary.

But Japan's foreign ministry says the restrictions go against Japan's stance on the Northern Territories.

Japan will further analyze the Russian move. Some government officials say Russia restricted the passage of foreign ships as it wants to show that the islands are its territory. Others say it is a response to the leaders of Japan and the US agreeing to strengthen defense cooperation during their recent summit.

Myanmar's Karen ethnic forces claim to have secured key border trading town

Ethnic armed forces fighting Myanmar's military say they have captured a key trading town on the border with Thailand.

The loss of Myawaddy is expected to deal the biggest blow to the junta since it seized power in a coup three years ago.

The Karen National Union said in a statement on Friday that it will cooperate with the Thai government to establish peace and stability on both sides of the border.

The group indicated that it will not block the cross-border flow of goods and people.

Thai troops are on alert in a town across the river from Myawaddy. A border check-point is crowded with Myanmar citizens seeking to flee to the Thai side.

Ethnic minority forces and pro-democracy fighters launched a fierce offensive against the military last fall.

They have so far taken control of areas near the border with Bangladesh in the western state of Rakhine, and a border town near China in the northern state of Kachin.

Japan's Emperor, Empress visit quake-hit areas in Noto Peninsula

Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have visited areas in Ishikawa Prefecture's Noto Peninsula hit hard by the New Year's Day earthquake.

The Imperial couple visited the towns of Anamizu and Noto on Friday. It was their second visit to areas impacted by the quake since March 22, when they visited the cities of Wajima and Suzu in the prefecture.

The disaster claimed 20 lives and damaged more than 6,000 buildings in Anamizu. The Imperial couple received a briefing from Mayor Yoshimura Koki at a shopping district where most shops are closed.

The couple then visited a nearby public facility where 46 people are taking shelter, and talked to evacuees.

At a port square, the couple bowed deeply toward the Yuigaoka district on the opposite shore, where a landslide caused by the quake killed 16 people.

The Imperial couple later flew to Noto Town and visited a junior high school where 43 people are taking shelter, and spoke with evacuees. In the town, eight people died due to the quake or from causes thought to be related to the disaster. About 9,000 buildings were damaged.

They also visited the town's Shiromaru district, where tsunami inundated wide areas and washed away houses.

After receiving a briefing from Mayor Omori Kazuyo, the Imperial couple made deep bows in the direction of a site where a house collapsed and one person was killed.

At evacuation centers in both towns, the Emperor and Empress conveyed their appreciation to firefighters and medical workers for their disaster-response efforts.

Japanese restaurant in Hong Kong offers Ishikawa seafood to help reconstruction

A Japanese restaurant in Hong Kong is putting on a special menu to help Japan's Ishikawa Prefecture recover from its devastating earthquake.

The downtown eatery on Friday started offering dishes that feature marine products and rice from Ishikawa.

It is part of a campaign started by a group of Japanese restaurants in Hong Kong to support the prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast.

Customers said they enjoyed the fresh seafood delicacies such as bass and deepwater shrimp sashimi.

One said they were shocked by the news of the New Year's Day earthquake and prayed for the reconstruction of quake-hit areas. Others also expressed support for people in Ishikawa.

The Chinese government suspended imports of all Japanese marine products after Japan started releasing treated and diluted water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea in August last year.

Hong Kong's trade control system is different from mainland China's. Hong Kong has continued to import seafood from Japan. But it is not importing marine products from Fukushima and nine other prefectures.

The Japanese restaurant's owner said he is willing to use ingredients imported from Ishikawa to help promote its reconstruction.

Okada Kenichi, Consul-General of Japan in Hong Kong, said the Consulate-General has received many donations for people affected by the disaster.

He said he hopes the funds will give people in Ishikawa strength to rebuild their communities.

Cherry blossoms in full bloom at park in Kyiv

About 360 cherry trees are in full bloom at a park in Kyiv. The Ukrainian capital and Kyoto in western Japan became sister cities more than 50 years ago.

The park had been partially closed because of Russia's invasion, but it fully reopened this year.

One college student said the blossoms are wonderful, and that she hopes Ukraine will bloom in the future.

A woman who was visiting with her child said the flowers lift her spirits and offer some respite from all the bad news.

She added that she prays peace will have returned to Ukraine when she visits the park again next year.
