Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he wants organizers of large-scale events to continue exercising caution by assessing the risk of coronavirus infections.

Abe spoke at a meeting of the government's task force on Friday, a day after a panel of experts came up with a set of proposals to contain the spread of the virus.

The experts said voluntary cancellations of large-scale events, as well as school closures and public actions, have led to a slight drop in new infections.

But they warned that unless such efforts are maintained, the nation could see an explosive spread of the virus. They urged members of the public to avoid poorly ventilated and crowded places where people interact at close distances.

The prime minister said organizers of large events should heed the advice of experts to properly assess the risks, and respond with caution. He said he wants event-planners to study examples of infection-prevention measures in making their decisions.

Abe instructed the education ministry to draw up specific guidelines on reopening schools as quickly as possible. Nationwide school closures began in early March at the prime minister's request. A new school year normally begins in April.

The foreign ministers of Japan, China and South Korea have agreed on the importance of the three countries working together to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

Japan's Toshimitsu Motegi, China's Wang Yi and South Korea's Kang Kyung-wha held more than an hour of talks via video link on Friday.

Motegi said the spread of infections is affecting the global economy. He said it is extremely important for the three countries to cooperate as they are responsible for regional peace and stability.

Motegi said it's necessary to control ports of entry for a limited duration to prevent infections from spreading across borders.

The ministers agreed that the health ministers from the three countries will hold a teleconference at an early date to discuss practical ways to cooperate.

They also agreed to share information on the development of medicine and vaccines, ensure a smooth trade in medical supplies, cooperation in the event of emergencies, as well as joint efforts in international public hygiene controls.

Motegi told reporters after the meeting that Wang had expressed hope that the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics can be held in a favorable manner.

Motegi repeated Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's remark that Japan hopes to stage the Games in full to show that humanity has defeated the virus. Motegi said the Chinese and South Korean ministers both voiced their support.

The Olympic flame for the Tokyo 2020 Games has arrived in Japan from Greece.

A special transport plane carrying the flame landed at the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force's Matsushima Base in Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Friday, 90 minutes earlier than scheduled.

The Olympic flame was lit in the ancient ruins of Olympia in Greece on March 12.

A welcome ceremony was held later on Friday at the Matsushima base. Judoist Tadahiro Nomura and wrestler Saori Yoshida, both three-time Olympic champions, received the flame and used it to light a small cauldron.

In the sky, jets of the Air Self-Defense Force's acrobatic flight team Blue Impulse flew in formation and drew five large circles in colored smoke, representing the Olympic rings.

The Olympic torch relay will start from the J-Village soccer training facility in Fukushima Prefecture on March 26.

The president of the International Olympic Committee says the IOC is "considering different scenarios" for this summer's Tokyo Games.

Thomas Bach made the comment in an interview with The New York Times on Thursday amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

Asked if there was a cut-off date to decide whether the Games will take place, Bach said it would be irresponsible "to set a date or take a decision right now" because of the uncertainty surrounding the crisis.

Bach also said the IOC was "considering different scenarios" when asked about the feasibility of moving the Games to the summer of 2021 or the summer of 2022.

But the IOC chief reiterated that cancellation of the Games is not on the agenda, indicating his stance to continue making efforts to hold the event as planned.

The president of the Japanese Olympic Committee, Yasuhiro Yamashita, said that he understands there has been no major change in policy to hold the Games as scheduled.

Yamashita said the IOC and regional Olympic committees agreed to work together toward a successful Olympics in a videoconference on Thursday. But he added that it's quite possible for any of the organizations to assume different scenarios.

Friday marks 25 years since the deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system by the Aum Shinrikyo cult.

Members of the cult released the toxic nerve agent inside morning rush-hour commuter trains on three lines in central Tokyo on March 20, 1995. Fourteen people were killed and about 6,300 others injured.

At Kasumigaseki subway station, one of those targeted, station officials offered silent prayers at 8 a.m., almost the exact time of the attacks 25 years ago.

Survivors and bereaved relatives offered flowers at an altar set up inside the station.

Thirteen Aum Shinrikyo members were convicted and sentenced to death for crimes committed by the cult, including leader Shoko Asahara, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto. All were executed in 2018.

Shizue Takahashi, whose husband was the assistant stationmaster at Kasumigaseki and was killed in the attack, said she has spent the past 25 years believing her husband is still with her.

She also urged young people not to get involved with successors to the cult. She said the groups are operating under different names, but their nature has not changed.

Japan's security authorities are closely monitoring the cult groups.

The Public Security Intelligence Agency says the successor groups of Aum Shinrikyo have around 1,650 followers, up about 150 from 10 years ago.

They believe that the groups' members still follow Asahara's teachings, and warn that the number of followers in their 20s is on the rise.
