US President Donald Trump has indicated that he plans measures worth about two trillion dollars to deal with the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

At a White House press briefing on Saturday, Trump was asked about multiple media reports that the aid package may double in scale from the one unveiled on Tuesday.

He said that he has "spoken directly or indirectly to everybody many, many times" and that he thinks the Democrats and the Republicans will come up with a helpful package.

The economic package is said to include providing 1,000 dollar each to individuals and financial aid to the airline industry and small and medium businesses that have been badly affected.
Observers say Trump obviously wants the large-scale financial spending to counter the growing economic impact of the pandemic.

Congress has to approve a spending package. Analysts say the debates in Congress will likely be intense, as the presidential election is looming this autumn.

US President Donald Trump has sent a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressing his willingness to work with him to contain the coronavirus.

A senior US government official confirmed that Trump sent a personal letter to Kim. The official simply said the president looks forward to continued communications with the North Korean leader.

Kim's younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, released a statement through the state-run Korean Central News Agency early Sunday.

She acknowledged that the leader had received a personal letter from Trump. She said Trump offered to help fight the pandemic, as well as explaining his plan to "propel" relations between the two countries.

Kim Yo Jong said Trump's letter showed the special and firm personal relationship he has with Kim Jong Un. She said the relationship between the two leaders is "not as far away as the relations of confrontation between the two countries, and they are very excellent."

She did not say whether Pyongyang will accept the US offer to help fight the pandemic. Her statement says bilateral relations and dialogue can take place only when equilibrium between the two countries is maintained "dynamically and morally" and when justice is ensured between them.

North Korea launched what are believed to be short-range ballistic missiles on Saturday. It is unclear whether a deadlock in denuclearization talks can be overcome while Pyongyang continues such military provocations.

The head of an international athletics federation says a decision about the future of the Tokyo Olympics, which are scheduled to run from July 24 to August 9, "may become very obvious very quickly in the coming days and weeks".

As the coronavirus spreads worldwide, athletes, sports bodies and Olympic committees in some countries are urging that the Games be postponed to ensure safety and a level playing field for athletes.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe told Reuters on Saturday that there is no need to hold the Olympics at all costs, and certainly not at the cost of athletes' safety.

He noted that qualifying events that are being disrupted and said the level playing field is in jeopardy. Coe said if that is lost, so the integrity of the competition.

Coe said, "Nobody wants this, least of all the athletes or the fans."

The International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Games organizing committees say the Games will go ahead as scheduled. But IOC President Thomas Bach recently told US media that other scenarios are being considered.

Coe indicated that the event could be postponed until September or October.

Meanwhile, the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee revealed that the IOC is asking national Olympic committees to look into the impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on athletes. The IOC will hold a board meeting this week.

Trump told a news conference on Saturday at the White House that Japan has "built one of the most beautiful venues" he's ever seen and that Japan is "all ready to go."

The president said he told Abe that it is his decision and that he knows Abe is "going to make it soon."

Trump went on to say that he does not know what the decision will be and that he should not be influencing it at all.

He added that there are options, including "delay for next year," but that it is up to Japan.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has said the Tokyo 2020 Games cannot be postponed "like a football match next Saturday."

Bach was speaking in an interview with a German radio station. Appeals for postponement of the Games are growing.

He said the procedures for putting off the Olympics are very complicated and added "you can only act responsibly if you have a reliable and clear basis for decision-making."

Asked about the coronavirus pandemic, Bach said the situation is abnormal and there is no ideal solution.

He said canceling the Tokyo Games would destroy the dreams of 11,000 athletes from 206 countries and territories, stressing his intention to continue efforts to hold the Games.

North Korea's state media has reported that the country's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test launch of a tactical guided weapon.

South Korea's military said that Saturday morning North Korea fired two projectiles that appeared to be ballistic missiles from North Phyongan Province in the country's northwest, and they flew about 410 kilometers.

North Korea's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported in its Sunday edition that a launch test of a "tactical guided weapon" was conducted on Saturday under the watch of the country's leader.

The paper shows photographs of a missile shooting up from a mobile launch pad.

Kim reportedly said that the new type of weapon systems which have been recently developed, and the ones in the development stage, will make decisive contributions to realize the party's plan to radically change its national defense strategy.

The newspaper called the test launch a success, saying that it proved the characteristics of different flight trajectories and falling angles and the accuracy of guided shells and their power.

A US commander who is stationed in South Korea has indicated that the North Korean military suspended its activity at some point, due to coronavirus infection cases in the country.

Observers say that North Korea obviously wants to tighten its control over its military and improve its missile technology.

Tadamichi Yamamoto, the head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, has expressed confidence that the people of Afghanistan can overcome their difficulties.

Yamamoto is stepping down after serving for four years.

He said in a farewell message on Saturday that challenges remain daunting but that they can be solved because of the Afghan people's capabilities.

He said he hopes 2020 will be the year the war ends and that the people of Afghanistan can create a peaceful and prosperous society.

Yamamoto said the United Nations will continue to play an important role in building peace and rebuilding the country after the United States and the Taliban signed a deal last month to end the war.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan was set up in 2002 following military operations triggered by the terror attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.

Yamamoto, a former diplomat of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has led the organization since 2016 to help with humanitarian aid efforts and achieve peace.

A UN official said that his successor has not yet been chosen and that countries will nominate candidates to select the next head of the organization.
