US President Donald Trump briefly left the Walter Reed hospital where he has been receiving COVID-19 treatment. He waved to his supporters gathered along the roadway in front of the hospital from his motorcade.

Trump posted a video on social media thanking his supporters. He said he would pay a surprise visit to them.

US President Donald Trump made a surprise appearance on Sunday afternoon outside the hospital where he is being treated for the coronavirus. Trump waved to supporters from his motorcade.

The appearance was likely aimed at showing that he is healthy ahead of the presidential election next month.

But some US media have criticized him for staging the brief photo-op.

The media noted that Trump could have infected two masked secret service agents who were riding with him, and that the move suggests he will continue to disregard basic precautions to contain the coronavirus.

The physicians' team of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center said on Sunday that Trump's health was improving and that he could be discharged as early as Monday.

But the doctors also said Trump's blood oxygen level dropped on Friday, the day the positive test results were disclosed, and again on Saturday.

They said Trump was given the steroid dexamethasone, a drug typically recommended for pneumonia.

Doctors treating US President Donald Trump for COVID-19 say he could be discharged from hospital as early as Monday, if his condition continues to improve.

Trump's doctors said on Sunday morning that the president is no longer complaining of shortness of breath and is walking around. They said his blood oxygen levels have returned to normal.

The medical team said their hope is that they can plan for a discharge to the White House as early as Monday, if the president continues to look and feel as well as he did on Sunday.

Trump has been undergoing treatment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since Friday.

The doctors said Trump ran a high fever on Friday morning and was given supplemental oxygen after his oxygen level dropped. The president's oxygen level also dropped on Saturday.

On Saturday, they administered dexamethasone, a steroid typically recommended for pneumonia, in addition to antiviral drug remdesivir.

The doctors declined to elaborate on the condition of the president's lungs.

Some US media outlets are reporting that a steroid is typically recommended for patients with serious cases.

Others were critical of information about the president receiving supplemental oxygen not being released until Sunday.

New York City is planning to introduce lockdown measures again in areas where coronavirus cases are resurging.

Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement at a news conference on Sunday. He said that he plans to reinstate lockdowns in several neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. The coronavirus test positivity rate has been above 3 percent in those locations for the past seven days.

Schools will be closed, and students will learn remotely. Businesses will be shut down in those communities. But essential ones, such as medical facilities and supermarkets, will remain open.

The city says that the lockdowns will last for at least two weeks. They will begin on Wednesday, after the governor of New York State approves the plan.

New York City was once the epicenter of the outbreak in the country and was locked down in March. At the end of September, the city started allowing schools to provide in-person classes and restaurants to serve customers indoors again.

The Saudi Arabian government has eased its coronavirus restrictions, allowing a limited number of citizens and residents to visit Islam's holy site in Mecca.

On Sunday, masked, socially-distancing pilgrims were seen praying and circling the cube-shaped Kaaba at the Grand Mosque from early morning.

The government hasn't said what led to the relaxation. But analysts say the government may be trying to rejuvenate the economy.

Pilgrimages to Mecca are a vital source of foreign currency for Saudi Arabia as they normally draw huge numbers of Muslims from around the world.

The daily tally of coronavirus infections in Saudi Arabia has been falling since peaking in June. But the jobless rate in the country has been climbing, largely due to the pandemic and lower global crude oil prices.

The government suspended the pilgrimage in March to contain the spread of the virus. It also sharply limited the number of pilgrims in this year's hajj, only allowing residents and citizens of the country to take part.

Starting next month, Riyadh plans to permit entry to the holy site to pilgrims from outside the country.

More than 330,000 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Saudi Arabia, according to a survey conducted by Johns Hopkins University.

Fighting between the military forces of Azerbaijan and Armenia over a disputed territory is increasing civilian fatalities.

Hostilities involving the Nagorno-Karabakh region erupted on September 27. The conflict has now caused more than 240 deaths, including 35 civilians.

On Saturday and Sunday, Azerbaijani forces mounted mortar and rocket attacks on Stepanakert, a city of 50,000 people, in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenian forces say they retaliated by shelling a military airbase in Ganja, Azerbaijan's second largest city with 330,000 residents.

Both sides say they targeted military positions, but their attacks also resulted in civilian deaths.

Azerbaijani forces destroyed residential housing and road sections in Stepanakert. Some ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh began evacuating to Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh lies in Azerbaijan, but is primarily populated by ethnic Armenians. The autonomous region has been at the heart of the roughly 30-year-old territorial dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia -- both former Soviet republics.

The mother of a Japanese woman who was abducted by North Korea 43 years ago is celebrating her daughter's birthday, wishing for her return.

Yokota Megumi was snatched in 1977 on her way home from junior high school. She was 13 years old.

Monday is her 56th birthday. Her parents had celebrated her birthday every year, but her father died in June.

Her mother, Sakie, told reporters that her family used to enjoy a big dinner on Megumi's birthday before she was taken.

She said that she and her two sons fondly remember the meals they had together.

She said that after Megumi was gone, she and her husband used to prepare a small piece of cake and coffee for their daughter on her birthday. She added that she is missing her husband this year.

Sakie said she wonders how Megumi is spending her birthday and which part of North Korea her daughter is in. She said that being unable to rescue Megumi deeply frustrates her.

She said she feels like she is walking in the dark every day. But she added she sees a glimmer of hope this year, now that Japan has a new prime minister.

Sakie said she will speak to pictures of her daughter and husband, telling them she will rescue Megumi no matter what.

Police in northern Thailand have arrested a Japanese national and four Thais on suspicion of illegally cultivating cannabis.

The police say 41-year-old Komiya Katsuhisa, a graduate student at a university in Chiang Mai, was arrested on Saturday along with four Thai men allegedly hired by him.

The police raided a building in Chiang Mai that they believe was used to grow cannabis. They seized 128 cannabis plants, as well as dry cannabis.

They say Komiya tweeted photos and information in Japanese about growing and using cannabis. They suspect he was selling the drug to people in Japan.

Police say Komiya denies some of the allegations, and maintains that he cultivated cannabis for research purposes.

A major Japanese insurer is offering protection against robotic mishaps as the need for social distancing amid the pandemic has led to a push to try robots in a variety of tasks.

Researchers across Japan are testing autonomous robots for jobs such as carrying goods and disinfecting spaces.

Sompo Japan Insurance has created a new product that exclusively covers accidents by these machines. It would insure in the event that an autonomously moving robot injures a person or causes damage.

Shinkai Masashi at the insurer said, "The coronavirus crisis has created a growing need for the delivery of goods to reduce the overall movement of people. We want to contribute to this by providing specific insurance for autonomous robots."

Sompo Japan Insurance plans to target businesses, universities and research institutions testing the devices.

Five professional wrestlers put on a show in a two-car train in northern Japan on Saturday.

Passengers cheered as the wrestlers ran around the train, jumping from seats to take down their opponents.

The performance started three years ago to support reconstruction of the JR Tadami Line linking Niigata and Fukushima prefectures. Service on the Fukushima side remains partially suspended due to heavy rains that hit the region in 2011.

The event went ahead this year to cheer people up, despite the pandemic.

The passengers had their temperatures checked, and were asked to sterilize their hands and wear face masks.

Some wore masks resembling those worn by masked wrestlers.

A woman said she was excited to see the performance up close, and that it helped her to release stress.

Meguro Koji, head of the executive committee overseeing the event, says it concluded that the event could go ahead with appropriate measures to prevent infections.

He said the most important message is to never give up, and to fight back against the pandemic.
