Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide is wrapping up his first overseas trip in which he met with the leaders of Vietnam and Indonesia. During a news conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, Suga reaffirmed Japan's commitment to work with the Association of South East Asian Nations to secure a free and open Indo-Pacific and support efforts to combat the coronavirus.

Suga stressed that Japan opposes activities that endanger security in the South China Sea, urging involved parties to follow the rule of a law. The comments are an apparent reference to China's increasing maritime activities in the region.

Beijing and other ASEAN countries, including Vietnam have competing territorial claims.

The issue is likely to be discussed during an upcoming ASEAN summit, which Vietnam will host in few weeks' time.

The Prime Minister also says Japan will work with Vietnam and Indonesia to revitalize the economy in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Measures include enhancing supply chains ... and relaxing travel restrictions.

US President Donald Trump and his Democratic opponent Joe Biden are stepping up their election campaigns in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.

Trump held a rally in the state on Tuesday for the second week in a row, with just a fortnight to go until the November 3 presidential election.

He told voters that the US economy had improved under his leadership.

He said that people in Pennsylvania were "a big beneficiary" of his request to Japan's former prime minister to manufacture more automobiles in the United States.

Trump also said, "If we win Pennsylvania, we win the whole thing."

Pennsylvania has long been a stronghold for the Democratic Party. But Trump won the state in 2016, after a tight race. Biden is determined to win back his home state.

Trump has held massive rallies for nine days in a row, mainly in battleground states, since his return to the campaign trail after a bout with the coronavirus.

On Wednesday, the still-popular former President Barack Obama is scheduled to hold his first in-person event to ramp up support for Biden.

The US space agency NASA says its probe has successfully touched the asteroid Bennu, which is more than 300 million kilometers away from Earth.

NASA engineers said on Tuesday that they had received data indicating that the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft had briefly touched Bennu's surface.

They say the probe began descending from 770 meters above Bennu around 17:30 UTC on Tuesday. The control center received data indicating that a successful touchdown had occurred at about 22:10.

The engineers say the data also showed that the probe successfully fired a burst of nitrogen gas that may have stirred up dust and pebbles on the asteroid's surface. The nitrogen gas was fired from a device attached to a robotic arm.

The engineers say they will further analyze the data to determine whether samples were collected.

Samples are expected to provide valuable information about the origins of life on Earth and the solar system.

If samples were obtained, it would be the third time that a probe has managed to collect samples from an asteroid. Samples were previously collected by the Japanese probes Hayabusa and Hayabusa2.

The British government says it will fund trials that deliberately infect young volunteers with the new coronavirus in a bid to speed up the development of an effective vaccine.

The government plans to invest more than 43 million dollars in the study to be conducted by researchers at Imperial College London and other organizations.

Prior to the trials, the researchers will assess the amount of the new coronavirus needed to cause COVID-19 by infecting a group of healthy volunteers aged 18 to 30 with the virus.

The researchers will then give vaccine candidates to another group of healthy volunteers and deliberately infect them with the virus to study the efficacy and side effects of the vaccines.

The volunteers' health will be monitored constantly during the study and for up to one year after it.

Researchers say they have not determined which vaccine candidates will be used in the trials.

They say they plan to begin the study in January following approvals from British regulatory authorities and the ethics panel.

The government says trials that deliberately infect people with a virus have been conducted for influenza and other pathogens. It says the method will be used for the first time for the new coronavirus.

The research team stresses that the first priority is the safety of the volunteers and that the experience and expertise they gain from the trials will help them tackle the pandemic, benefiting people in Britain and worldwide.

The number of the coronavirus cases around the world has topped 40 million.

Record daily infections were registered during this month in France, Germany, Italy, other European nations, and Russia. The United States has also seen resurgence in cases.

Johns Hopkins University has put global coronavirus cases at 40,063,546 as of 10:00 UTC on Monday.

The United States has the largest number of cases with 8.1 million, followed by India's 7.5 million, Brazil's 5.2 million, and Russia's 1.4 million. COVID-19 has killed more than 1.1 million people around the world.

In France, a nighttime curfew was imposed in Paris and several other city districts starting last Saturday.
The German government has mandated mask-wearing in crowded places, depending on the latest COVID-19 situation in any given area.

The number of new daily infections in the United States has been trending up again since mid-September. It had been declining since its peak in July.

Coronavirus cases in India and Brazil have been decreasing while cases in the United States and Europe are increasing as these countries head for winter.

The US university says it took 166 days for coronavirus infections to exceed 10 million people after the World Health Organization confirmed the first cases in January. That number was hit in June.
It notes it took 44 days to reach 20 million, 38 days to reach 30 million and 31 days to top 40 million this month.

Thailand has partially lifted an entry ban on tourists for the first time in seven months.

The country has had no foreign tourists since April, as the government had imposed strict entry restrictions as part of anti-virus measures. As a result, less than 10 cases have been confirmed recently.

To help save the country's tourist industry, the government lifted the ban from low-risk countries and territories.

On Tuesday, about 40 tourists from China with special visas arrived at an airport near Bangkok.

They had their baggage sterilized, and headed to facilities for two-weeks of quarantine.

The tourist industry welcomes the move. A woman who works at a rental costume shop near a popular temple in Bangkok said she is afraid more about losing income than the coronavirus.

Japan is not eligible for the special visa. The Thai government plans to study whether to include the country, depending on how the outbreak develops.

How to support tourism while curbing the spread of the virus is a common challenge for many countries. Some European countries have seen resurgence of infections after easing travel restrictions.

The United States and Russia have expressed their willingness to start talks for a one-year extension of the last remaining nuclear arms control pact between the two countries.

The US Department of State released a statement on Tuesday shortly after Russia's foreign ministry announced that it had proposed a one year extension to the New START Treaty.

The US says it appreciates Russia's willingness to make progress on nuclear arms control, and that the US "is prepared to meet immediately to finalize a verifiable agreement."

Russia said in the foreign ministry's statement that it is ready to freeze its total number of nuclear warheads for the one-year period.

It also said the warhead freeze and extension would be possible if Washington does the same and does not advance any additional conditions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin previously proposed a one-year, unconditional extension to the pact.

The New START Treaty expires next February, but bilateral talks on an extension have hit a snag.

Moscow opposes a proposal by Washington for a new framework that would cover tactical nuclear weapons in addition to strategic warheads.

US President Donald Trump's administration has insisted that China should join the treaty.

The Wall Street Journal expressed its view that the US may use the time gained through the extension to create a new framework to include China, which is building up its nuclear arsenal.
