China's state-run television has aired programs for three straight nights featuring what it calls confessions by people spying for Taiwan.

China Central Television began the broadcasts on Sunday, claiming that Chinese intelligence authorities have uncovered hundreds of cases of espionage by Taiwan.

One of the alleged spies is said to have joined an anti-government rally in Hong Kong in August last year and handed out fliers expressing Taiwan's solidarity with the protesters.

The man is said to have traveled to the neighboring Chinese city of Shenzhen the following day to secretly film China's armed police gathering there. He is said to have handed information to Taiwan.

The programs also allege that Taiwan's spies based abroad have spread theories of a "China threat", and gathered information from China under the guise of academic exchanges.

Authorities in Taiwan called the allegations "malignant political manipulation," adding that China should stop trying to frame people from Taiwan.

Observers say the broadcasts aim to create the impression that Taiwan's pro-independence forces are stepping up their activities.

They say China is sending a warning to Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, whose administration is forging closer ties with the United States.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has reported to the country's king that he has the support of the majority of the parliament's lower chamber, a requirement for becoming prime minister.

Malaysia has been facing political turmoil since February when a government led by then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad collapsed. Muhyiddin Yassin, former interior minister, officially became prime minister in March, but the government has been under increasing pressure for its lack of a mandate from voters.

Anwar, a former deputy prime minister and close aide to Mahathir, met with King Al-Sultan Abdullah in the capital Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

Later, Anwar said at a news conference that he has gained the support of more than 120 lawmakers in the 222-seat parliament. He said the king will meet the leaders of political parties, and that he must wait for the king's decision patiently.

The king's palace said Anwar reported the number of his supporters but not their names, and that the king responded by saying only that he would follow the constitutional process.

Malaysian law says that the king can appoint as prime minister a lawmaker who has the support of the majority of the parliament's lower chamber.

A Belarusian opposition leader has warned of a nationwide strike unless President Alexander Lukashenko announces his resignation by October 25.

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya issued a statement through social media on Tuesday. She urged Lukashenko to step down and halt the use of violence, or face wider protests including a national strike from October 26.

Tikhanovskaya ran in the August 9 presidential election against Lukashenko, whose claim of victory touched off mass rallies by protesters who say the polls were rigged.

The opposition leader has sought support from France and Germany, and delivered a speech at a UN meeting to seek international pressure.

But Lukashenko continues to take a hardline stance with backing from Russia.

Observers say the opposition is taking note of similar post-election protests in another former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan. The president there has signaled he may resign once the nation regains order.

The World Trade Organization has authorized the European Union to slap tariffs on US exports worth up to 4 billion dollars over illegal US support for airplane maker Boeing.

Tuesday's decision follows a WTO ruling last year that prompted the United States to begin imposing tariffs on 7.5 billion dollars in EU goods and services over state aid for Europe-based aircraft maker Airbus.

The US claims that Airbus received illegal subsidies. The EU has leveled similar accusations against the US, saying Boeing received illegal subsidies.

The WTO has already determined that the subsidies on both sides were illegal.

The EU has prepared a list of US products subject to additional duties. Industrial and farm products are reportedly being targeted.

But both the US and the EU are signaling interest in settling the dispute over airplane makers subsidies, rather than continuing retaliation, amid the global economy that has sustained serious damage from the new coronavirus.

US IT giant Apple has announced new iPhones with faster 5G communication technology. They are the company's first offerings to use next generation wireless networks.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 12 during an online event on Tuesday.

The company is launching four models that will support 5G. Prices start from 799 dollars for standard-size models. The first devices will be available later this month.

Apple also touted the phones' cameras, saying they enable sharper photographs and videos.

The company usually unveils new smartphone models in September. This year's announcement was likely delayed due to the pandemic.

5G phones are also available from rival firms including Sony, Google, Samsung Electrics and Huawei.

Manufacturers are betting that 5G models will reignite demand as smartphone shipments have been on the decline.

The International Monetary Fund has revised upward its outlook for the global economy this year, but the projected growth rate still remains in negative territory.

In its World Economic Outlook released on Tuesday, the IMF forecast a 2020 global contraction of 4.4 percent. That's up 0.8 percentage points from the last forecast in June.

The IMF attributes the upgrade to a recovery in personal spending with the reopening of the economy.

China is the only major economy with a positive growth projection. Its economy is expected to expand 1.9 percent, an upward revision of 0.9 points.

The United States, which has the largest number of coronavirus cases in the world, is expected to post negative growth of 4.3 percent. This is an improvement of 3.7 points.

The outlook for Japan has been revised upward by 0.5 points to minus 5.3 percent.

The forecasts have been upgraded for Germany to minus 6.0 percent and for Britain to minus 9.8 percent.

But the outlook for India is down by 5.8 points to minus 10.3 percent. The IMF says the infection continues to spread there.

The IMF argues that fallout from the economic downturn will be felt for a long time, with cumulative economic losses reaching 28 trillion dollars by 2025.

IMF Director of Research Gita Gopinath suggested that the coronavirus situation and its economic impact need to be monitored, while the virus is rebounding and localized lockdowns are being reinstated.

NHK has learned that Japan's Foreign Ministry is considering lowering the travel alert that has been issued for the entire world due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The ministry raised the alert to Level 2, the third-highest on a scale of 1 to 4, in March for the whole world and asked people to avoid nonessential travels.

But some countries and cities around the world have started easing lockdown restrictions. The ministry now believes that Japanese nationals are less likely to face restrictions, or to be stranded on foreign soil.

Ministry officials are considering lowering the alert to Level 1 or lifting the advisory completely.

The ministry also issues an infectious disease alert.

A Level 3 alert, which urges people to cancel their travels, has been issued for a number of countries and territories.

The ministry plans to lower the alert to Level 2, which asks people to refrain from nonessential travels. The plan is to pave the way for resumption of international travel.
