US President Donald Trump says Sudan will be removed from a list of state sponsors of terrorism once it compensates American victims of terrorist attacks. His apparent aim is to prod the Arab nation to establish diplomatic relations with Israel.

Trump tweeted on Monday that Sudan has agreed to pay 335 million dollars to victims and bereaved families of the 1998 attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

The US government blames the incidents on Al-Qaeda, which was then led by Osama bin Laden. It accused Sudan of sheltering the terrorist chief and demanded compensation.

Sudan's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok thanked Trump for his decision in a Twitter post. Hamdok wrote that Sudan is looking forward to its removal from the list, which he said has cost his country too much.

Sudan is now led by a military-civilian government following last year's military coup, which toppled the rule of Omar al-Bashir -- a long-time foe of the United States. The military-civilian government had been urging the US to lift Sudan's state sponsor of terrorism designation.

Trump apparently hopes that delisting Sudan will encourage it to become the latest Arab nation to establish diplomatic ties with Israel.

The Trump administration has brokered deals between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain for mutual diplomatic recognition. Sudan is a member of the Arab League.

US media say President Donald Trump has downplayed the danger of the coronavirus and criticized the government's top infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

The media quoted Trump as telling a meeting of his campaign team on Monday that people are saying, "Whatever. Just leave us alone. They are tired of it."

Trump also said "people are tired of hearing Fauci and all these idiots," and "if I listened to Fauci, the US would have 500,000 deaths."

Fauci is a key member of the US government's coronavirus task force and admired by the public.

With the presidential election just two weeks away, Democratic challenger Joe Biden is expected to step up his attack on Trump over his handling of the pandemic.

US health authorities confirmed more than 70,000 new cases on Friday amid a recent surge in coronavirus infections in the country. The situation is again becoming as bad as the height of the pandemic in summer.

People in Ireland are being told to stay within 5 kilometers of their homes, as part of tough new restrictions to stem a surge in coronavirus infections.

The number of new daily infections in Ireland has nearly tripled since early October.

Prime Minister Micheal Martin said on Monday that the highest level of restrictions on a scale of five will be in place for six weeks, starting from midnight on Wednesday.

In addition to the travel-limit of 5 kilometers, shops will close, except for those selling food and medicine. Pubs and restaurants will only offer takeaways. Schools will remain open.

Wales in the UK is also imposing what it calls a "firebreak lockdown" for two weeks from Friday.

Citizens will be asked to avoid non-essential travel and stores will be closed except for those selling daily necessities. Pubs and restaurants can only open for takeouts.

Britain's coronavirus caseload has topped 18,000 on certain days. Social restrictions are being imposed on a regional basis, depending on the severity of local outbreaks.

The number of the coronavirus cases around the world has topped 40 million.

Record daily infections were registered during this month in France, Germany, Italy, other European nations, and Russia. The United States has also seen resurgence in cases.

Johns Hopkins University has put global coronavirus cases at 40,063,546 as of 10:00 UTC on Monday.

The United States has the largest number of cases with 8.1 million, followed by India's 7.5 million, Brazil's 5.2 million, and Russia's 1.4 million. COVID-19 has killed more than 1.1 million people around the world.

In France, a nighttime curfew was imposed in Paris and several other city districts starting last Saturday.
The German government has mandated mask-wearing in crowded places, depending on the latest COVID-19 situation in any given area.

The number of new daily infections in the United States has been trending up again since mid-September. It had been declining since its peak in July.

Coronavirus cases in India and Brazil have been decreasing while cases in the United States and Europe are increasing as these countries head for winter.

The US university says it took 166 days for coronavirus infections to exceed 10 million people after the World Health Organization confirmed the first cases in January. That number was hit in June.
It notes it took 44 days to reach 20 million, 38 days to reach 30 million and 31 days to top 40 million this month.

The US Justice Department says six Russian intelligence officers have been charged for orchestrating a series of global cyberattacks targeting government entities and other organizations between 2015 and 2019.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Demers said on Monday, "We announce criminal charges against the conspiracy of Russian military intelligence officers who stand accused of conducting most disruptive and destructive series of computer attacks ever attributed to a single group."

The six members face a series of charges ... including conspiracy to conduct computer fraud and abuse, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Officials say the attacks caused more than 1 billion dollars in losses.

According to the indictment, the accused hacked into the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea and deleted data from thousands of computers related to the event.

It says the hackers also disrupted Ukraine's power supply in the middle of winter and harmed the operations of a health care system in the US state of Pennsylvania.

Officials also accuse the Russian members of disrupting the 2017 election in France through hacks that targeted political party officials.

British government officials who participated in the investigation said the attacks also targeted organizations involved in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games before they were postponed.

The Tokyo Games were originally scheduled to be held this summer but were pushed back until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Justice Department officials say the timing of the indictment was unrelated to the upcoming US presidential election, but said voters should feel confident that their ballots will be counted properly.

A new report by the International Monetary Fund says digital money has the potential to be widely adopted.

In the report published on Monday, the IMF says making payments or transferring funds across borders could be as easy as sending email.

But the report points out possible risks, such as the use of digital money in crime. It says digital money could make it harder for regulators to enforce exchange restrictions or manage capital flows.

US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said a number of things need to be considered before introducing a central-bank backed digital currency, or "CBDC."

He says it's more important not only to look at the potential benefits of a CBDC but also to see the potential risks and recognize the important trade-offs that have to be thought through carefully.

China has been testing out a digital yuan. And Facebook has announced its own digital money called Libra.
