Washington's top diplomat is pressing ahead with a tour of the region to secure a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. The death toll in Gaza has topped 27,500 after four months of fighting between the two sides.

The latest deal mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US would see a pause in fighting in exchange for hostages.

In a meeting with the Qatari prime minister on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he plans to press Israel about the proposal.

"It's been shared with the Israelis, I'll pick up that conversation tomorrow in Israel when I'm there, and we will be working as hard as we possibly can to try to get an agreement," Blinken said.

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said, "The overall prospect of this looks for us, at least as we received it, giving more promising and more prospects for better results."

They said Hamas's response to the plan is "generally positive." They did not provide more details.

Israel, meanwhile, vows to continue its offensive against Hamas. Its forces have threatened to advance on the southern city of Rafah where more than a million Palestinians have taken shelter.

An Israeli military spokesperson said 31 hostages taken by Hamas have been confirmed dead. The New York Times said that Israeli intelligence officers are looking at unconfirmed information that at least 20 other hostages may have also been killed.

The fighting in Gaza has levelled large swaths of the enclave.

Earlier this week, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees released a video that shows the remnants of a health center. The agency called the scene ''an unprecedented level of destruction.''

Health officials in Gaza said 107 people died in a 24-hour period on Tuesday.

Authorities in Chile said on Tuesday the death toll from massive forest fires that raged for several days has risen to at least 131. Casualty numbers could rise further, with more than 300 others remaining unaccounted for.

The fires broke out mainly along the coast, before spreading to heavily populated areas in the mountains.

The blaze tore through a hilly district in the central city of Vina del Mar, destroying many of the 700 homes in the area. In many cases, charred walls and pillars are all that remains.

Residents and volunteers were working together to remove debris.

A man in his 50s whose house burned down said the fire spread quickly, fanned by strong winds. He said he only had a few minutes to evacuate. He said some of his friends in the neighborhood died.

Most of the fires have reportedly been put out, but firefighting operations are ongoing in some areas.

Authorities are investigating suspicions that some of the fires were started deliberately.

Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera died on Tuesday in a helicopter crash. He was 74 years old.

Reuters news agency and other media reported that the helicopter, carrying Pinera and three others, plunged into a lake in southern Chile. Pinera was pronounced dead but the three others survived.

The cause of the crash is still unknown.

A native of the capital Santiago, Pinera had led a successful life as a businessperson when he was elected as a senator. He later served two non-consecutive four-year terms as the South American country's president in 2010 and 2018.

During his first term, Pinera tackled the aftermath of a deadly earthquake and tsunami that claimed more than 500 lives in 2010.

In the same year, he also oversaw the rescue of 33 workers trapped underneath a local mine.

Pinera visited Minamisanriku Town of Miyagi Prefecture, northeastern Japan, which was hit hard by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, one year after the disaster.

He is known to have pledged to give a moai, or monumental human statue found in Easter Island, Chile, to the town to replace the one that had been broken in the 2011 disaster. The new statue, carved from volcanic rock on the island, was delivered in 2013.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared three days of national mourning.

Orcas trapped by ice off Hokkaido, northern Japan, were no longer seen in the area as of Wednesday morning.

Rausu Town officials said they hoped the orcas had been able to free themselves as the ice floes appeared to be loosening on Wednesday morning.

The orcas were first spotted about 1 kilometer off the coastal town on Tuesday morning. Video taken by a drone at about 10 a.m. on the day showed that there were about 10 of them, immobilized in waters packed with ice floes.

The operator of the drone, which is a marine wildlife surveyor, also confirmed about 17 similarly trapped orcas about 2 kilometers northeast of the original location about 6 hours later.

The town officials said they looked for the orcas for about 90 minutes from about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, but did not see them.

The local weather observatory said seas in the area were still packed with ice floes.

Foreign nationals working in northern Japan under technical intern and other programs have taken part in a sightseeing cruise to view drift ice off the coast of Hokkaido.

The event was organized by the city of Mombetsu and a local fishery processing industry association. The group wanted to introduce residents from warmer climates such as Thailand and Vietnam to ice floes, one of the natural wonders in this region.

About 80 people plowed through the Sea of Okhotsk on board the icebreaker Garinko on Tuesday.

Drift ice flows toward the coast of Mombetsu daily at this time of year, creating a sea of pure white.

The passengers were seen enjoying the unique experience.

A woman from Indonesia said she had fun seeing drift ice for the first time. She said Mombetsu is cold, but that she has come to like the city's beautiful scenery.

Kato Yoko works for a local international exchange body that organized the event. She said her group hopes to keep planning more opportunities for people from abroad to get to know the city.
