Indonesian voters set to choose new leader on Wednesday
Indonesia's presidential election is set for Wednesday. Incumbent Joko Widodo is not allowed to run again, so the country with the fourth largest population will usher in a new leader for the first time in about a decade.
It's a three-way race between Anies Baswedan, who served as governor of Jakarta for 5 years, Prabowo Subianto, who currently serves as defense minister, and Ganjar Pranowo, who previously served as the governor of Central Java province for 10 years. They are all campaigning with their own running mates, one of whom will become vice president.
The latest opinion poll shows Prabowo and Joko's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, leading with a support rate of more than 51 percent.
Prabowo is seen as Joko's natural successor. The incumbent president initially said he would be neutral, but local media reported he has moved to expand support for Prabowo by announcing cash assistance mainly for the country's poor ahead of the election day.
This election is called the world's largest direct vote to choose a leader, with more than 200 million eligible voters. A candidate will be elected president if they get more than half of the votes on Wednesday. Otherwise, there will be a runoff in June.

Trump comments spark backlash from NATO allies in Europe
Controversial comments about NATO members by former US President Donald Trump have sparked a backlash from European leaders.
Trump on Saturday revealed that while he was in office he said that the United States might not protect its NATO allies from a potential Russian attack, unless they commit their fair share of defense expenditures.
On Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told reporters that NATO's promise of protection is absolutely all for one.
He said that any relativization of NATO's guarantee of assistance is irresponsible and dangerous, adding that it is solely in Russia's interests.
Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren told the Reuters news agency on Monday that what Trump said is exactly what Russian President Vladimir Putin loves to hear.
She said, "Our strength is our unity. And if we are not united, that makes us weaker."
French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne said at a news conference that he will not cease convincing all the leaders of the relevance of the NATO alliance.
He warned that every minute counts to prepare Europeans to absorb the shock of the scenario outlined by Trump.
Trump expressed discontent when he was president, claiming that many of NATO members rely on the US for their defense.
Trump is seeking the Republican nomination in his bid to secure a second term as US president in the November election.
European nations are expected to be on heightened alert for the possibility that Trump may win the presidency again.
