Russian authorities extend investigation into Navalny's death for 14 days

A group supporting late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny says Russian authorities have informed his family that Navalny's body will not be handed over another 14 days.

The authorities on Friday announced Navalny's death in a prison where he was serving a jail sentence. He was a fierce critic of President Vladimir Putin.

A spokesperson for his support group said in a social media post on Monday that the authorities said the official probe into Navalny's death had been extended.

The bereaved family has been denied access to his body and details into the cause of his death.

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin was not involved in the proceedings regarding the handover of Navalny's body to his family. He added that it's not a job for the administration.

More than 60,000 appeals have been sent to a Russian human rights group, demanding that the country's Investigative Committee hand over Navalny's body to his family.

Navalny's widow, Yulia Navalnaya, said in a video message on Monday that Vladimir Putin killed her husband. She said the Kremlin refuses to hand over his body because they are waiting for traces of poison to disappear from the body.

Navalnaya added that she will continue her husband's work and continue the struggle for her country.

EU foreign ministers invite Navalny's widow to meeting, express condolences

EU foreign ministers expressed their condolences to the widow of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny during a ministerial meeting that was held on Monday.

Yulia Navalnaya attended the EU foreign ministers' gathering in Belgium. The ministers invited her after her husband -- a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin -- died at a prison on Friday.

Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, said the ministers listened to Navalnaya's accounts of anti-government movements in Russia and the Putin administration's crackdown on opposition figures during the meeting.

After the gathering, Borrell reported that Navalnaya said, "Putin is not Russia. Russia is not Putin."

Borrell said he wants to support the "brave Russians" who tried to pay tribute to the late opposition leader.

Ukrainian delegation inspects reconstruction efforts in town hit by 2011 tsunami

A group of Ukrainian municipal officials has toured a town in northeastern Japan to learn about its recovery from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The ten-member delegation, including senior officials from the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv and the southern city of Odessa, visited Onagawa in Miyagi Prefecture as part of a program organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Town officials explained that they built commercial facilities, the municipal office and a hospital around the main street with the aim of making the town convenient for residents and attractive to tourists.

The participants later walked around the community, taking photos and videos and visiting shops.
The deputy mayor of Odessa, Pavlo Vugelman, said he was impressed by efforts to enable businesses to restart after the disaster. He said he hopes to introduce such programs in Ukraine.

The deputy mayor of Kharkiv, Dmytro Isaiev, said it's wonderful that the whole town came together and the public and private sectors cooperated to promote reconstruction. He noted that the situation in Kharkiv is desperate and people remain anxious, but he hopes to bring them together like in Onagawa.

Town official Aoyama Takahiro said if the post-disaster experience there can be of help to the people of Ukraine, he is ready to offer whatever cooperation is needed.

North Korea's Kim reportedly receives car as gift from Putin

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly been given a Russian-made car as a gift from the country's President Vladimir Putin.

A report on the gift appeared in the Tuesday edition of the ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun.

The North Korean leader's sister, Kim Yo Jong, reportedly conveyed her brother's gratitude to the Russian side, calling the gift a clear sign of the special personal relationship between the two leaders.

The newspaper did not provide a picture of the car or any details, such as the model.

When Kim visited the Russian Far East last September, the leaders were seen seated together in Putin's car. Kim was apparently briefed about the vehicle.

The two countries have forged closer ties and Western countries suspect that Pyongyang has provided arms to Russia, as it continues its invasion of Ukraine.

There is also a possibility of Putin visiting North Korea after next month's Russian presidential election.

US incarceration of Japanese-Americans remembered 82 years after Roosevelt order

Memorial events marking 82 years since US President Franklin Roosevelt signed an order leading to the incarceration of Japanese Americans were held Monday across the United States.

Roosevelt signed the executive order on February 19, 1942, during World War Two. Many Americans of Japanese ancestry living in Hawaii and the US West Coast were classified as hostile aliens and forcibly sent to camps around the country.

Bainbridge Island, located off the coast of Seattle, Washington, was where the first Japanese residents and others were sent to.

On Monday, about 100 people took part in an event on the island to clean up a memorial for people who were incarcerated and mow overgrown weeds on a trail.

Kurt Hayashida is a senior member of a local Japanese-American community group. His father was sent to a camp.

Hayashida said fear of Japanese Americans caused people to jump to conclusions about them.

He said it means a lot that many local people came out and helped tend to the memorial.

US President Joe Biden issued a statement Monday calling Roosevelt's executive order a tragic legacy. He reaffirmed the federal government's formal apology to Japanese Americans, writing Nidoto Nai Yoni - "Let It Not Happen Again."
