Russian forces suffered nearly 50,000 personnel losses in Avdiivka, Ukraine says

A Ukrainian military commander says his troops have inflicted nearly 50,000 personnel losses on Russian forces before withdrawing from the strategically important city of Avdiivka. But a US newspaper warns of challenges confronting Ukrainian troops amid stalled military aid from the United States.

Ukrainian Commander Oleksandr Tarnavskiy took to social media on Sunday, one day after Ukraine announced its decision to withdraw its troops from Avdiivka in the eastern region of Donetsk. Russia's defense ministry also asserted full control of the city.

Tarnavskiy said his troops inflicted the human losses on the Russian side during their operation to defend Avdiivka since last October. He added that his troops had also destroyed 364 tanks and five planes of Russian forces.

However, an article published by The New York Times on Saturday says the fall of Avdiivka "allows the Russian military to move troops and equipment more efficiently" behind the frontline as it presses in other directions.

The article says that "across the entire 600-mile long front, Ukraine is short on ammunition without renewed American military assistance." It says Ukraine is also "struggling to replenish its own depleted forces after two years of brutal fighting."

The article names several parts of eastern and southern Ukraine where Russian forces are now stepping up their offensives.

It warns "Ukrainian ground forces are in perhaps their most precarious position since the opening months of the war."

China to step up patrols in waters around Kinmen after deadly boat chase

China's coast guard says it will step up patrols in waters around Kinmen, a group of islands effectively controlled by Taiwan, following a deadly boat chase involving Taiwan's coast guard.

A spokesperson for the Chinese coast guard said on Sunday that it will regularly carry out law enforcement patrols in the waters between Xiamen and Kinmen. Xiamen is a coastal city in China's Fujian Province and is close to Kinmen.

The spokesperson added that the patrols are aimed at maintaining order in the relevant sea areas and safeguarding fishers' lives and property.

Last Wednesday, a Chinese fishing boat capsized near Kinmen while being pursued by the Taiwanese coast guard. All four people on the Chinese boat were thrown into the sea, and two of them died.

Taiwan has designated what it calls "prohibited" and "restricted" waters around the area to bar Chinese vessels from entering without permission.

Taiwan said the Chinese boat was operating inside the "prohibited waters" and its coast guard had done nothing wrong.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office issued a statement last Wednesday condemning Taiwan's actions. The office called it a malicious incident, and denounced Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

On Saturday, it said that there is no such thing as "prohibited or restricted waters." The comment appears to be an attempt to scrap the tacit understanding between China and Taiwan.

Observers say Beijing is taking steps to further increase pressure on Taiwan's administration following the incident.

Space debris inspection satellite enters into planned orbit

A rocket has successfully launched a satellite that will fly around and survey a piece of Earth-orbiting space junk. The craft is meant to be a precursor to a mission to remove such space debris.

The rocket carrying the satellite lifted off from New Zealand early on Monday morning. It placed the payload into the scheduled orbit about an hour later.

The satellite is a brainchild of Tokyo-based venture firm Astroscale Japan and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA.

The satellite will use ground-based observation data to approach its target -- an upper stage of an H2A rocket launched by JAXA in 2009.

The craft will then rendezvous with and take images of the debris while maintaining the distance of only several meters.

The rocket body is currently orbiting the Earth at an altitude of 600 kilometers. But its precise location remains unavailable as the piece does not transmit GPS data.

Astroscale Founder & CEO Okada Nobu says he is relieved that the satellite safely entered into orbit. But he adds that his firm will keep its guard up as it will take at least about 60 days to complete the mission.

Celebrations in Okinawa for people who have welcomed their 97th New Year

Celebrations have been held on an island in Japan's southern prefecture of Okinawa for people who turned 97 years old this year according to a Japanese traditional counting method.

The event, called "mandala," took place on Taketomi Island on Sunday.

"Mandala" means a pinwheel in local dialect. Legend has it that people will become children again in their hearts when turning 97 years old, counting in the old style. The traditional age-counting method is to add one year on every January 1.

Three women, born in 1928, gathered just outside the most sacred holy site in the area. They wore red costumes with gold embroidery.

After local residents congratulated them, the three boarded a bus decorated with pinwheels and other ornaments. While touring the island, they waved at well-wishers along the road and enjoyed talking about how things were when they were young.

Members of each community later performed dances and expressed their wishes for the women's longevity.

One of the women, Nohara Namiko, said she is very happy to hit the milestone. She said she could do so thanks to other people and expressed her gratefulness.

One well-wisher said it is wonderful that elderly women who know the island's old days can stay healthy.
